PICO 4 - My test is over, here are the results

I’ve seen reports of current version of SA working really well. It also works fine for XP11 which is why I’m making an assumption that it is not the blocker here for me. Once working, I’ll be happy to buy VD to see what kind of improvements I can make.

Ditch $20, way better than trying to spend time fixing it by yourself. If it still doesn’t work, then you have VD people to help you out
In the end you’ll move to VD if you want fly it right and not having a jittery party going on

Good shout. Will probably do that this weekend as part of the troubleshooting. Just opened Zendesk ticket for this issue. MSFS hangs around 90% loading if SteamVR is running prior to MSFS. If SteamVR is not running, MSFS loads fine but then after starting SteamVR, switching to VR in MSFS via the menu option or CTRL+Tab hangs MSFS and VR will not start. I need to quit SteamVR then MSFS will give the initialization failed error and become responsive again. Still thinking something is borked between MSFS and SteamVR.

From times to times I get that init error, just restart VD Streamer or SteamVR and it’s good again.
Maybe you can try one of the ALVR nightlies and see if it also happens prior to go VD route…

Just a heads up for those msfs users considering the Pico 4;

I got the new v51 PTC in my Quest Pro yesterday that now includes Local Dimming with all PCVR games/sims. This is a bit of a game changer and results are pretty close to OLED blacks/contrast. This works well with both Link and Air Link, but it’s not currently compatible with Virtual Desktop.

OLED screens can individually dim the brightness of each pixel for better blacks/dark colors. IPS screens, which most VR headsets use, can’t. So iirc what local dimming does is it dims the backlight zones instead, which are spread throughout the screen.

Blacks/contrast are still not quite as good as my +3yo Vive Pro 1 with AMOLED screens and Etsy Gear VR lens mod. However my VP1, even super sampling the heck out of it with a rtx4090, still has a bit too much SDE for my liking.

Night flying with my QPro/rtx4090 looks sooo good now (better blacks/contrast, and colors even pop out a bit better). Unfortunately this will never be possible with the Pico 4’s lower quality single layer lcd screens. Nor is it possible with the Quest 2 screens. I’m not even sure if the upcoming Quest 3 will be LD capable?

YouTuber Pico 4 pushers with affiliate links are kinda quiet all of a sudden. At least honest ones like Tyriel have commented that this has changed his view of the Quest Pro and he’ll now be using it for all of his PCVR (previously, Pico 4 was his go to PCVR headset).

I don’t doubt your words, but it’s like 3x the price (in Europe at least)…

I have the P4 waiting for the new PCVR headset, so I wanted it to be on the cheap side. It’s not perfect, but it does the job

Thanks, I wasn’t aware of AVLR so will give that a try over their weekend.
I did get a response from Zendesk with the following ‘We recommend using Windows Mixed Reality with your headset rather than Steam VR.’. I don’t believe this is feasible with the Pico 4 but there are a number of troubleshooting steps on their reply so I’ll go through it all anyway in the hope it somehow rectifies the issue.

Yeah, this is not a G2.
If you try ALVR nightly, choose something prior to the 12th, I think that’s a more stable version

You can try run SA/SteamVR as administrator…

Ya, the Pico 4 is still very good value for most.

Finally resolved my issue!
SteamVR was the issue. I had tried uninstalling and reinstalling it previously but it made no difference.
I finally narrowed it down by running nothing other than SteamVR then starting MSFS. MSFS would get to around 95% loaded then hang. As soon as I quit SteamVR, MSFS would resume and finish loading.
This time to try the SteamVR reinstall, I followed the instructions at the following which seems to have done the trick. Now after reinstalling SteamVR, MSFS loaded up fine and I could get into VR within MSFS without issue. BTW, I was blown away by the impression of VR after only a minute in the Caribou cockpit. Will need to start working through various settings to clean up the image over the weekend but already feel I’m going to be hooked.

The following guide to do the reinstall of SteamVR for anyone else that hits a similar issue:

So after a little playing and being somewhat happy with the performance of my 3090 and Streaming Assistant, I decided to try out Virtual Desktop. You guys were right, a noticeable uptick in clarity and performance. Still not perfectly clear but gauges are readable at normal distance. I’m also impressed with how smooth it all works, even sitting at around 30fps with TAA. Switching to DLSS Quality mode gets me ~ 37fps although not quite as sharp as TAA. Already very happy with the performance I’m seeing and still need to play around with some combinations of settings to see where I can improve.
Looks like I can hold off until 4090’s drop to a more acceptable price/secondhand as the 3090 is performing better than expected but knowing me, a glass or two of wine later and I’ll end up ordering one!
Oh, and the JustFlight Hawk is utterly sublime in VR! Just need to get used to everything being in the headset now instead of having Android tablets on the side or my Loupdeck & Streamdeck for feedback and controls.

my 4090 is coming this or next week and i am looking at vr options but i guess no need to look any further. for 380 euros for the 128gb version i dont think anythimg can beat it. lmao i stopped drinking but i totally get what you mean. a few glasses and clicking the buy button without thinking of the consequences becomes easy and effortless😅

My Pico 4 really does not want to work on MSFS. I get a lot of jitters when I turn my head.even though it shows 40 fps. Using an Rtx 4080 and 12700k. Setup works fine with xplane12

What software and settings are you using? Also, what kind of connection for the headset?

am using wifi 5. FPS is fine as it shows 40fps. Using virtual desktop and openxr toolkit.

You should try WiFi6 (if available), or to “disable” all the other devices on WiFi5 while flying. Even better, a direct connection to the router.

thanks found the problem was Openxr toolkit. I resetted to default and now it seems to work fine.

I’m happy with the PICO 4, using a RTX3090, I9 10900K and a dedicated WIFI 6 (Netgear AX 1800) Router. I got solid 30-35 FPS and its quite smooth but not perfect at all. Have to tweak a little bit. But it makes fun!
