Pilatus Porter: Swiss Army Knife of the Skies

taildraggers and high crosswinds, especially in the sim, are a shaky proposition at best. i go out of my way to avoid them - to the point of bypassing my intended landing strip for another close by with more favorable wind conditions

Good news: The Phase 2 of the PC-6 goes to beta late next week. Yay!

Awesome! How long do you expect it to be in beta before release?

But, if you’re in the support forums on our site for this product, you will, likely, be able to be a “tester” for it
 if you wish.

Hello! It’s the same on the real one! Crosswind on the left on take off can be very tricky! Usually when i’m lining up i put the nose a little bit on the right and when the airplane started to move on i use differential brakes to mantain the center Line and also aileron on the Wind! Left crosswind scares all Pc6 Pilots on take off!

OK
I just tried it again with 14k left crosswinds and, by using full right rudder AND full right brake, I was able to successfully take off! I really appreciate your input! Thanks!

Not sure where to ask or even how to open a new topic so i thought i just ask here even if the issue(?) is not limited to the Milviz PC-6.

After all it’s the Milviz PC-6 i’m highly interested in purchasing so here we go (currently the only 3rd party add-on on my radar for what it’s worth) :

I’m new to MSFS but not new to flight simming in general (been flying FSX, also fly DCS and IL2 for quite a while) so excuse my lack of knowledge regarding the base sim here.

I read that there are / have been issues with 3rd party aircraft like the Milviz PC-6 when it comes to door / window interactivity and “aircraft overstress damage” enabled in the general MSFS settings.

From what i read you either have/had to disable the overstress damage in the settings or you’d “overstress” the airplane upon opening a window. Was that the case and is it fixed by now? Is it still an issue?

If that issue still persists, is there a confirmation somewhere that either MS/Asobo or Milviz are tackling the problem at some point in the future?

Given this is a simulator disabling the overstress damage kinda takes away from the fun - but knowing that in theory you could interact with an aircraft much more than you actually can because of “sim limitations” when set to realistic is a letdown as well.

I have to say just reading through this threat right here heightens my urge to purchase the aircraft even more, but not being able to fly “properly” (all realism settings ON) or not being able to make full use of the aircraft forever because there is no fix in sight (if that issue is still a thing even) would make me think again.

Clear Skies!

EDIT: Apparently i’d be able to start a new topic now. Feel free to delete this post and point me the correct way if i posted in the wrong place.

Hi. I’m not specifically sure about how the MV Porter handles this now (I can check later but no doubt someone else will chime in before I get around to it!) because I have had the overstress damage switched off for months now.

Reason being that it isn’t really “damage” in my opinion. It’s instant catastrophic destruction as soon as for a nano second you’re over some arbitrary and hidden peak value.

If it DID actually cause gradual and realistic damage it would be fun to have to deal with the consequences - like loss of control, rudder jamming, one flap missing, sudden decompression, fuel leak etc. but everything is like “oh sorry you snapped in half and died”. Does that really happen?

Added to this, I can sometimes go over that peak with my controller just by sneezing (in a fast jet - already doing some high G admittedly) it’s just not fun to end a flight that way so I disabled it.

For me it’s way more fun (with FSRealistic you get other warnings and clues as to when you’re over speed to react to) and miles less frustrating until it’s implemented in a more varied and interesting way but it won’t happen due to “licenses”. Pretty sure you can open the doors and windows in Porter though!

Thank you for your input on this.

You make some good points in favor of switching the stress damage functionality off, however i still prefer instant catastrophic failures over no failures at all when mishandling the airplane - i’m used to sometimes having an unexpected rapid end to my flight anyways.

In terms of fighter jets i personally do believe MSFS is not the proper sim, at least as of yet (that Rhino is pretty unsatisfying to me, having flown the DCS Hornet since it’s release), but here is not the correct place for such a discussion.

Unfortunately my question wasn’t really answered yet as FS realistic might be an interesting product (looks similar-ish to A2A sim accupack back in the days?) but no real solution to the issue of not getting punished for mishandling the a/c.

EDIT: deleted a word i didn’t think would get picked up by the profanity filter / qualify as profanity at all.

The overstress damage from opening storm windows or for the Porter flying without doors (yes that is a thing) or using the cargo trap door is purely on Asobo. There is a known work around, but most third party devs are feed up with making workarounds that has to be reupdated when Asobo eventually finds the time to address this bug.
As for Fsrealistic all it really does is adding soundfx and camera shake. It’s done kinda clever and I like - along with actually hearing when my floats touch down - but for what it does I find it somewhat overpriced.

I think as MSFS totally unrealistically simulates stress damage and crash damage, it’s more realistic to tun it off in general.

I mean, as long as I get a black screen instead of simulated degrees of damages graphically depicted in the sim andthe aircraft beaving accordingly, I won’t bother having it on.

And don’t get me started on aircraft damage and a black screen because of having a window open on the taxiway. That’s just comically bad. Better turn off all those damages.

Thank you, exactly the piece of information i wanted to know:
It’s still bugged, but it’s on Asobo’s table and will get fixed eventually.

I totally understand 3rd party devs position of “it’s on Asobo to fix it for everybody rather than everybody having to work around the issue each time they build an aircraft”. The fact that it is on Asobo’s radar however is enough for me to be buying the Milviz PC-6, even if i can make full use of the sim (opening windows for immersion etc) at an undefined later date..

Fresh money shall arrive at the turn of the month, and so shall the Milviz PC-6 into my hangar.

Thanks again!

Exactly! Also, there are some nice tumbling physics going on when you hit a building or the ground that you miss out on, when Crash Damage is On and it just cuts to black.

Waiting for the Stage 2 of awesome Porter, I have been forgetting to ask. Porter is the only airplane I own (out of 60 in total) that still has trim wheel direction reversed. I know it sounds strange. I use a custom trim wheel and I always have to check “reverse” in the controls menu to make it work correctly.
Some time ago, the same problem was on C22j, so I asked the developer and in the following update, it was fixed. If anyone knows if I can fix that by editing cfg. or maybe Blackbird can do that together with the Stage 2 release?

Anyway, just wanted to say that recently I got back to flying Porter a lot and I am really loving it. What a fantastic airplane it is. It makes me even more excited for Beaver in the 40th-anniversary edition and Otter / Totter sometime in the future.

I also have a custom trim wheel, but must admit I don’t use it in the Porter because it has electric trim on the stick so I just use buttons on my stick to replicate that. I’ll have to try it. The only plane I fly that has reversed trim (that I know about) is the DC-6.

Yes this “damage” simulation (or to be more precise the non-existant damage but getting some stupid black screen in all imagineable situations a real aircraft would survive without damage) is ridiculous. But unfortunately I need to have it on because more sophisticated planes like the Pilatus Porter, Flysimware Cessna 414, and the PMDG and Fenix have a highly advanced damage simulation.
And I think all of these advanced and detailed system failures (hydraulics, electrics, engines
) might get fully disabled when switching off all aircraft damage in the sim menu.

They don’t get disabled. There is no reason at all to leave the “black screen” damage activated.

@Nighthwk4922 Is there any plan to add static passengers in the Stage 2 like in the 310R? Maybe optional after checking a box on the pad so everyone would be satisfied.

Any ETA ? Good idea for passengers !
