Once again, during the AIRAC nav data update, we have to download the entire last patch (25GB) over again on top of the 1GB nav data,
It wouldn’t be so bad for those of us with good connections, except data moves at a snail’s pace. Despite having gigabit connections, people are seeing speeds that would have been consdered slow 10 years ago. This needs to be fixed.
Or give us the option to defer updates to a time that suits the user?
This is what I do for DCS as sometimes I just want to hop on and fly in the time I have available.
Being an online service, MSFS is in the same class as an MMO, even though though there’s no real interaction with other live players. They can’t allow to defer updates any more than an MMO can. I don’t like it, but I understand why it’s done and why they can’t allow users to opt out of updates.
I only saw three packages patched/downloaded, ‘fs-base-ai-traffic’, ‘fs-base’ and ‘fs-base-nav’
Though I did minimize a couple times so there could have been others.
It would also help a lot if we had warning this was going to happen - I expected a big update in 5 days time. My PC has been tied up with this all evening - don’t know if it is going to reinstall everything since day 1 or what? Obviously can’t stop it for fear of breaking it. (Not even sure if doing all this will break it)
This wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the road map because it doesn’t belong there. They have said they would be pushing these AIRAC nav data files monthly outside of the regular update cycle vs waiting 2 weeks until the next big update. Technically, it’s a week late as the latest AIRAC was updated a week ago.
In any case, if the update system was working right, it would have been a small 1GB patch and then business as usual. Instead, many of us got that planned 1GB alongside with having to download the whole 25.93GB from the last patch. That was NOT what was supposed to happen.
It happened last month. People complained. It fell on deaf ears as usual. And here it is again. I have a feeling this will be the norm for a while until this bug vote thread can get enough votes to get onto their radar.
Navigraph use Jeppesen charts. MSFS use NavBlue charts. It’s supposed to be the “same” data, technically, but Jeppesen seems to always be far superior and more complete.
I’d personally stick with Navigraph. It’s always up to date and more accurate. But up to you. If you don’t use external tools to fly or fly on networks such as Vatsim, the stock data should be fine.
Now, if you have the full Navigraph sub including Charts, you’re loosing a log of functionality if you cancel that.
My theory is that it has to do with changing the fs-base folder. Some addons require you to change it and maybe the installer gets confused and just downloads the whole folder again.
For those that got hit by this, sort your “OneStore” folder by date, and put the new stuff at the top. This will show you what was updated, not why, just what comprised that additional chunk of unwanted downloaded data.
If I remember correctly, when the last patch was released back in December, pretty much all my Asobo aircraft folders were updated, so I would expect to see something similar here.
People who use a 100% vanilla install are as effected as people who install mods. If you care to do a search, read up on last month’s AIRAC update where the same thing happened. And in some cases, people HAVE messed with core files (folks using the Longitude mod which requires editing core files) didn’t also have to re-download the patch after the AIRAC update.
