There are three different issues outlined in this thread (mesh spikes, scenery culling, terrain morphing), so for those interested it would be recommended to vote/participate in the following bug reports/requests since they are used by Asobo to collect feedback.
Since the latest sim update, I have noticed quite a drastic increase in external LOD pop-in.
When looking out of the cockpit window I can now see buildings, trees and even mountains suddenly appear within the first few moments of panning the camera around, and it’s really jarring. This also occurs while using the external camera.
The sim update seems to have introduced an aggressive form of occlusion culling (a feature that disables the rendering of objects when they are not currently seen by …
Sim Update 5 brought some huge CPU performance and RAM consumption benefits by culling the scenery not visible in the player’s current view. However, it means that panning the camera quickly or switching views can cause frame drops or stutters, and some obvious terrain morphing and object/photogrammetry pop-in.
To many this is an acceptable compromise for better performance, but for some people this is too much of a trade-off, especially for those with high-end computers that are not interested…
Brief description of the issue:
Doing flights over mountainous terrain, eg. between Innsbruck and Zurich, the mountains are continually popping and changing shape - others have described it as “morphing”. This came into existance after the USA update and has persisted through the UK and now the Nordics update, with the Nordics being the most noticeable and worst. This effect is very off putting as even if you try to ignore it, your eye is drawn to each mountain as it pops into a different shape…
