Yes, but which of the two upper screen ENG options are typically displayed during the flight? The basic one with N1, N2 and FF or the one that has a few more parameters included?
I’ve watched a lot of 737 YT videos since the PMDG products started dropping, and it seems to vary quite a bit by operator. I’m sure different airlines have different procedures.
I will ask
I’m trying to push some probably ridiculous boundaries with this, so please bear with me. Is it even possible to operate the 737 without working GPS? That is, if there were a GPS outage, would it be completely grounded?
I’ve been practicing radio navigation–VOR/NDB/ILS/LOC-only for departures, en-route, approaches–but it’s always been with IRS active and GPS information updating in the background. I’m now trying to see whether I can technically start up the aircraft with no GPS data being captured – apart from entering the originating airport coordinates. However, with IRS off, neither inboard nor outboard displays will show course/deviation indications for tuned VOR frequencies. The inboard display does show the VOR being tuned with DME info, but that’s it. Yaw damper will also not activate, since I think it relies on the IRS being active.
Is it possible to activate the inertial reference side of the IRS while deactivating the GPS side of it, to simulate these situations?
I guess I’m answering my own question – seems like if there were a broad GPS outage, that 737s would be grounded and more radio-nav-centered aircraft would be the ones in the air.
If I’ve missed any means of simulating this in the 737 though, I’d be grateful to hear about it.
I think with these kind of questions, you might love the PMDG DC6. Just get rid of the GPS box with a push of a button and go all “old school” across the globe.
A 737 can be operated without GPS, but the IRS’s must be on, or none of the attitude instruments will work to show pitch, roll or heading.
I’ve got big plans for the BAE-146. But DC6 very possible somewhere down the line!
Makes sense — thanks for that confirmation.
Looks like the inaccurate minimum-maneuver speed indicators on the PFD are going to be fixed along with the rollout of the -900 model.
Sun screen no longer moves all the way around to the front–stops at side window post. It used to easily slide around to the front. Anyone know why this is? I tried it on the passenger version and the BBJ, both the same.
If you have the HGS (HUD) installed, it can’t slide around all the way.
Ah, thanks LL, I figured it’d have to something like that. Gonna check it out now.
Hmmm…now the visor isn’t there at all. I did turn HGS off, but still no visor in the pocket. Shades is turned ON.
Hey guys, is there any ETA on the update that fixes the dark windows from the cabin in the 736?
Okay, sun visors fixed. Don’t know what happened but this morning the visors are back in the pocket and when I turned HGS off, as LameLefty said, they once again slide all the way around to the front. Also, in watching a Ytube video about these visors I discovered the heretofore unknown by me side sun shades. Awesome!
On those “roll out” sun shades, A RL 737 pilot mentioned here that most airlines don’t use these. Apparently, they are extremely fragile and cost a fortune to replace if they are damaged.
If you watch any videos from Flying with Big Ern on YouTube, Southwest apparently just clips pieces of paper up in the windows, lol.
The upper DU page with more info is an option so not all the NGs have it. We had them in one of the companies I worked for but its usage was down to personal prefererence. As far as I know even if you use this compact option (and blank the lower DU) the automatic popup feature still works in case of an engine problem.
How interesting. For the companies that had the option of the enhanced data upper DU, did they also have the ability cycle to the basic info for the display N1/N2/FF or was it either-or? Honestly, for the small amount of data it displays, the lower DU seems to be almost a waste of space.
You’d have both options and you can cycle through them with the ENG button.
One interesting thing: on those aircraft where the compact display is not pilot selectable you can still get it just once after powering up the aircraft by a certain sequence of the ENG and SYS buttons.
And of course the compact display pops up automatically on all NG aircraft in case of a lower DU failure.
