PMDG Douglas DC-6

… if her complexities scare you… take time to watch PMDG DC-6 Tutorial 1: Flight Deck Layout - YouTube

It will do two things…

  1. Re-assure you about your abilities to handle this wonderful creature &
  2. Help you learn about 1950s airliner operation

Can you tell I love her?

I never bought any PMDG stuff for the older sims but after watching all the tutorial vids and reading stuff like this for the DC-6 I’m seriously considering it for MSFS

My experience with them has been great. Then again, I was never into airplanes by other developers. But the level of detail in all aspects is great. You can see it also with this airplane in the youtubes. And I also like the way they’ve embraced MSFS. Gives some confidence.

it is ofcourse an awesome aircraft, done exceptionally well.

Thanks but no thanks. I’ll wait for the passenger version of the B727 or the DC-9.

Well they have said it is going to have a lot of help. But this is not going to be an add-on where you press CTR-E and get going, it might do it but then I have to ask what is the point?

So press “Ready to Taxi” and go do Circuits and Bumps to your heart’s content. Or, fly her VFR and enjoy the sights… that’s the beauty of this bird- she’s as complex OR AS SIMPLE as YOU want her to be.

If you decide she’s still not for you- I respect that. Still, I hope you will at least watch and consider her, she’s in a class by herself.

I just wonder why they picked such an old aircraft to jump into MSFS 2020 with. I was hoping for something with all the latest tech. It is a very pretty plane.

I asked in another thread where beta testers of the DC6 were writing and got no answer so I will try again here.

Does the sound change when you open or close the cockpit windows? I saw it didn’t in a P3D video and noticed the same in one of the tutorial videos. I wouldn’t really like for a product of this quality to have such a glaring fault.

YES it does

Don’t forget a lot of the stuff you are seeing is Beta…but yes, the sound now DISTINCTLY changes when you open a window or a door- in fact ALL the SOUNDS are superb! It exercises my Bose Computer Speakers better than anything else I’ve flown.

Thank you for your answer I’m throwing money at the screen no sure if that is the right way to proceed can you ask Rob if he is getting it?

There is a multitude of reasons, I am guessing. For one, any aircraft with FMC and glass cockpit is going to take a little more to get right. There are also things like weather radar which are a big question mark right now. DC-6 is a perfect way for them to get their feet in the water with MSFS, AND test the market, AND have some more time to develop more modern things.

While MSFS is my first sim and I have no past experience with old planes like this or PMDG, this is going to be something I consider at least because of what I have read. Even though I’ll probably hold off, it seems like flying it will be an an experience in itself.

I have the entire PMDG library for P3D. I will tell you this much - their design philosophy is lean, concise, and elegant. You don’t get external apps to configure the airliners, all the options are right there in the MCDU, including fuel, payload, all aircraft equipment options (there are hundreds of combinations), the ability to select failures, simulation options, change simulation rate. It’s all very friendly and elegant. There are very few things quite like it - FSLabs being one of them. Using all their stuff is a pleasure.

PMDG are one of the best, there is no doubt in that.
