Even for MSFS 2020 it is streamed from the cloud?
Yes it is.

And that is what I’m criticizing, just simple map data updates should not be held back and marketed as a big City Update. We used to get new cities and even airports for these.
I wonder how many more cities around the world are currently held back because this.
After this update, MSFS2020 does not shutdown ….. same problem again
Today: Dresden. Once again I took the Eurocopter out to explore the city. I started at Elbland Hospital Meien (ED8IF) & followed the Elbe to the city center:
The docks to the west of the city look good:
and this high level of detail continues as we approach the Marien bridge, though the building next to the Kuppel restaurant on Weisserit str. has a green frontage:
this green tinge is present on quite a few of the buildings in the city center:
The ground imagery is crisp. I use rail lines as an indicator - if I can distinguish the rails and ties, I consider the image to be excellent. This is the Dresden Hauptbahnhof:
Apart from the green tinge, buildings look realistic. Tin Trees are noticeable, but not too distracting:
The tree cover is rather more than on Bing Maps:
Overall, performance was fine, and with the exception of the green-tinge buildings, I’d say that on my PC & settings, this was an excellent rendition of Dresden & the surrounding area.
I checked out Kiel (EDHK) and it’s really an eyesore with the green (shadow) tint of building. Some examples:
Kiel Altstadt
Kiel City Hall from the North
… and how it should look like from the South:
Kiel Südfriedhof viewed from the North:
… and viewed from the South:
Kiel Blücherplatz
Kiel Gaarden, which looks like camouflaged.
It’s everywhere the same: Facades, roofs, buildings that where in the shade/casted a shadow are all green, washed out…
Facing from the south, they are okay… but don’t dare to come in from the North.
And in contrast to the TIN before (sure, older dataset, not as large in regard to the coverage),… but well, the new one has a lower quality.

Today’s flight was around Leipzig. This city was rather a disappointment, mainly due to the overwhelming presence of green-tinged buildings as noted by previous posters:
As with Dresden, the tree cover looks to be greater than IRL:
Ground imagery was for the most part sharp - this is the main railway terminal:
The city appears to have at one time invested heavily in planting trees along many of the major roads. Unfortunately, though these photogrammetric trees look OK from altitude, at 250m the difference between these and the 3D trees is noticable and does detract from the flying experience:
The representation of Halle (Saale) to the northwest is better:
Performance was about the same as other CU12 areas visited so far. Despite framerates in the 40’s, there was no stuttering & the entire flight was smooth.
The heavy green tinting in Leipzig really destroys the otherwise very good photogrammetry experience. It’s not everywhere - some areas are more affected than others - but it is especially present on the shadow sides of the buildings.
I’ve seen similar effects in other cities (like in Washingto D.C.).
See bug ticket here: CU12 Leipzig: all pg buildings are green
The last city to check out is Munster. I started at the Emsdetten Health Campus (EDKEB) and flew south towards the city.
Initial impressions were good:
Reaching the downtown area, I did not see any green-tinged buildings. This is Munster Cathedral:
A random street. I thought the side of this building with ivy growing up it’s sides looked terrific:
This area passes my “rails & sleeper” resolution test:
This river barge is rendered well too:
I have been noticing that communication towers are all distorted. Munsters’ Fernmeldeturm is no exception:
Like other areas, “TIN Trees” do spoil the moment:
But I thought these buildings were very well rendered:
Unfortunately, shortly after this screenshot was taken, the game experienced this CTD, so I was unable to complete my circumnavigation of the city & its environs.
Performance in this area was good for a Photogrammetric area on my PC & settings, with framerates in the high 40s to low 50s, with no stuttering.
My overall impression of this CU is positive, with each of the city areas rendered at a high level of detail.
The biggest drawbacks for me were:
- Green-tinged buildings, particularly in Dresden & Leipzig.
- TIN Trees (including High-voltage power line towers rendered as a “tree”)
- Communication towers incorrectly depicted. Because there are so few of these - usually only one per city, I’d suggest that the CU development team considers creating custom POIs for these in future CUs, as the current system clearly cannot handle the complexity of these buildings, and which are usually considered local landmarks and reference points for VFR flyers (at least I use them as such in the sim
)
I had no issues when downloading the CU (on my PC, it’s streamed!) and for the other poll questions, my recorded ratings are:
- How do you like the new photogrammetry? 8. 2 points deducted for the green tinged buildings & tin trees.
- How is your performance/stability in this update? 8. would have been a 10 if I had not had that CTD.
- Performance/stability is the same as before the CU, compared to recent SU3 Beta builds (I only flew in SU2 once)
- How would you globally rate this update? 8
C’mon city update team, you can do better than that in 2025 ![]()
There aren’t that many big poles in city updates, they should be easy to find and flatten…
-this post was deleted-
Well, given the current rate of city updates and the number of cities included (like 5 to 10) when they tried to provide PG for all the major cities of the whole globe, they would take like 20 or 40 years until they had covered all cities. In the mean time several PG areas would be completely outdated.
Or they can limit themselves to those countries with the most customers and most interest in and with PG data available at reasonable costs and keep them updated in a somewhat regular cycle of like every 10 years.
Example: The photogrammetry of Nuremberg is around 12 years old and as someone familiar with that city you easily notice this. Even though MS/Asobo just updated Leipzig, Augsburg and other cities to newer data they didn’t even manage to keep Nuremberg somewhat up-to-date. (Same likely applies to other cities.)
Long story short, it would need like 2 or 3 times as many city updates to really have a larger number of cities covered with PG data at a frequency of 10 years or lower.
Then FS2024 would probably cost like 50% more, and already now it isn’t exactly cheap.
Just my 2c.
Charlotte NC, Pittsburgh PA, and Orlando Florida all need city updates because they all look very outdated compared to the new hand crafted scenery
Germany is so flat topographically in the parts they have updated. It is quite uninteresting visually, sorry to say. No eye candy! You can’t even get close to the buildings to appreciate them because the trees, rocks and some buildings are either blobs or melting dribbles. Most historical buildings in many of those parts were bombed to hell in WW11 and most of them are historically speaking, relatively new.
Please update some visually interesting parts of the world. (Erm, not in the US or Germany or UK please - somewhere original would be good).
You mean, there’s a world out there that MSFS claims to be a digital twin of, that is not in the US, UK, or Germany?? ![]()
I think MS have really missed the mark here. Since when did Germany start looking like The Matrix?
New Update is available.
- New Lights added
- Some Buildings are now better iluminated
- Many Photogrammetry Trees are deleted and replaced
- Vegetation changed in some Places
The Mod (Freeware) in now compatible with the JustSim Dresden Airport EDDC (Payware). I made a little upgrade ![]()
Inspired by the new infos in this thread:
CU12 Leipzig: all pg buildings are green - Bug Reporting Hub / Scenery and Airports - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums
I just went back in current SU5 beta 1.7.21 (although I don’t think it’s sim-version related?) to check out the 3 cities that were green tint ruined at release: Kiel, Leipzig, Dresden (see my post above at that time).
Based on that, I can confirm that all 3 cities have been improved about the green tint issue. During my flights I did not see any affected areas anymore.
…which makes me wonder - once again - about the feedback loop by MS/Asobo.
Why request feedback, have separate reporting threads (see above link) as “feedback logged” on a problem… and then they quietly improve and tell noone?
Why not use these improvements to motivate the community and get some positive feedback on your progress?
“Do good and talk about it.” should be the spirit!
