[Polls] City Update 14: The Netherlands and Belgium

After setting ship traffic from Ultra to Medium i get no more performance problems… i noticed ships were stuck in the canals of Amsterdam on Ultra and were shivering and bugging around. This caused the fps degrading for me… dont know if its for everyone.

EHAM is part of the Deluxe upgrade and all three packs that include Deluxe were updated at the same time CU14 was released so EHAM could’ve received an update.

World Update IV also got an update and its possible EHRD Rotterdam received an update as well.

So difficult to keep track of though.

I think the city update 14 is more about tin
The area of some extend regions around different airports in The Netherlands and Belgium had received some update of tin photogrammatry with this.
The rest of the update were some airports like EHRD but from main aviator version

Any way if you check the folder where downloaded files are stored or either streamed something in the Microsoft .Limetless_8wekyb3d8bbwe → LocalCache–> Packages–> Official2024–>OneStore folder
Check the last date changed and you be able to see what has changed in these folders

A nice test is if you set Buildings in usercfg.opt to -1 this will exclude the generic houses in cities and villages as well as buildings on generic airports, nb handcrafted scenery wont be affected by this -1 setting
Purpose for this is to see to where photogrammatry and Tin is and where not ( cities look flat but nice whitout buildings other than photo realistic on higher altitudes)

The CPU power consumption above Amsterdam, starting from HEAM, is impressive; my 9800X3D has peaks of 120 Watts.

Same, even ordered a more powerful PSU, had two hard resets Amsterdam/Schiphol area.

Very impressive update. For me with FS20, On the laptop - all is fine no real issues - but on my desktop I have quite a bit of stuttering around Amsterdam. I am still getting around 30 FPS, but the game seems to freeze more. Not a big issue as the view is very very realistic.

While I cannot say it causes performance issues, I can say that this strange area causes visual glitches.

I started at Schiphol, southbound and after I had taken off I could see, in the distance, a recangular bright area. It seems what I am seeing is the sky because the terrain is missing there. Only when I get closer the gap closes more and more and is filled with tiles. When I increase the distance, the gap opens again. Looks to me as if there are some missing lower-LOD tiles in this area. And I am convinced it is exactly the area that is shown as black at certain zoom levels on the world map, just as in your screenshot.

CU14 thoughts… X Box X.

My initial impressions were that the update was only so so and so i went back today to see a ‘definitely new area’. I had first started in what I am sure was new but then went into older PG. Thats a problem when asking for opinions of the new without it being obvious where the dividing lines are… maybe make it all new ?

so, today… I tried to start from where I landed the other day (EHVK) but today it had no runways so I chose a nearby grass strip and flew south to the new PG area and it mostly looked good to great. I’m annoyed by what I consider to be the overuse of pine trees - especially when the PG pretty clearly suggests deciduous. there are also some off color issues (of buildings - they’re an odd monochromatic greenish grey (or pinkish) from a distance)… the Sacramento and Modesto and Oakland PG areas have better colors imo and I don’t understand why everywhere can’t be as good.

my last comment in this post is that I think there is something wrong near Rotterdam – the AI couldnt decide if buildings were fields or maybe if fields were buildings:

not sure what to make of it.

Performance seemed good for the most part and this update seems to have solved the pauses I have been having in many areas while in beta 1.7.11.0 with addon support v284 (note that pauses and stutters have been a thing for me for all of SU5 so far - until now). I hope I don’t have to eat those words.

Performance is fine for me for the most part, but as with other PG in Europe it is very resource intensive and hungry.

I’ve found that a big part of it is the green blob PG trees that are usually under the Asobo trees. They seem to be a huge chunk of excess geometry for the sim the render and I’ve found excluding/cleaning these up in dev mode significantly reduces strain on m system and improves performance. I’ve already done this around ELLX and LSZH to good result.

Yes, it’s quite surprising that this resource overload only occurs in Europe. Right now, above the Amsterdam photogrammetry area, I’m getting spikes in CPU usage on my 9800X3D. It also happens above certain mountain ranges like the Alps. There’s clearly some kind of layer of something causing system resources to skyrocket. And it only happens in Europe.

Observations after 4 hours flying around all 10 AOIs, with the same graphic & online settings as CU13 (California):

  • Installation as a streamed download was a breeze. Click install, wait 5 seconds - done.

  • Photogrammetry is good, but not as good as the last CU. Specifically, ground textures and building visuals are not as crisp. For example, this is in Bruges between the Hof de Jonghe & Lange river: Notice the bluury facades::

And this is the Market square. There are the two POIs (Belfry & Provinciaal Hof), but look at the building on the far side of the square:

  • TIN trees are still the major distraction when flying low (~ 500 ft AGL) and slow; less distracting above 1,000 ft. This is Antwerp:

  • There are occasional anomalies such at the warehouse complex by the R4 / E34 road intersection to the west of the town of Zelzate, where there are two sets of wind turbines - wind turbines created by (i think) the geometry (dark grey, with no blades), with the procedurally-placed turbines on top of them, perhaps as the AOI turbine’s top is considered “ground level” by the procedurally-placed turbines:

  • [Edit: I’m also frequently seeing water “puddles” popping into view close to the aircraft. For some reason these tend to be alongside or over roads.]

  • I’m getting frequent short 1-3 second stutters while in the AOIs. These do not occur after leaving an AOI area - e.g. when flying between them. These did not occur in CU13, so this CU is worse in this respect.

  • There is a quite noticable “LOD popping” effect. This is most noticable when flying low, when the trees & structures a few hundred feet in front of the aircraft change to a higher resolution LOD. This does not affect every building or tree in view - perhaps only 10% or so, and appears to be dependent upon the complexity of the geometry. For example, buildings with curved surfaces - e.g. roofs - will change LODs, but adjacent buildings with flat surfaces (wall & roofs) may not. If it were possible to fade-in these LOD changes, then it the LOD change would be much less noticable.

So, although I’m rating this CU overall as good - here, for example, is the Next Nature Museum and Jacob Oppenheimer Park in Eindhoven:

The performance degradation (stutters) have resulted in my global rating to be two points below CU13.

If you look up the area in Google Earth you can clearly see it’s greenhouses. So the AI was more or less right here. It’s just that the texture of the greenhouse roofs looks a bit odd in FS2024, as if it is concrete or partly as if it is a graveyard.

Thank you for pointing this out to me. I should’ve checked the online imagery. Its actually quite a good representation.

Is it me or are there too many awful photogrammetry trees. They are awful, presumably we have to wait for Bijan to chop them down

Honestly, I can’t understand why they haven’t yet implemented some AI technique that can identify trees and shrubs, remove them, and replace them with optimized 3D models, as is done in some mountainous areas.
Even Photoshop’s AI can currently identify and automatically select snow, sky, mountains, water, architecture, vegetation, natural ground, and artificial ground.

Ive been testing the Netherlands update and struggling with a couple of things. The main issue which is when Map Displacement is enabled I am frequently getting morphing or bleeding water textures popping into view at close radius to the aircraft. Outlines to many waterways not well defined like ground and water clashing. I have cleared rolling cache along with all shaders etc. Default scenery and also used the scenery order tool and moved City Update 14 as far down the list as possible. Also get random performance drops and stutters despite having a 5090, 7800x3D and 64 Gb of DDR5 memory. 1 gig internet

That’s a good observation. I have also requently seen water “puddles” popping into view close to the aircraft. For some reason these often tend to be alongside or over roads.

Safety first! This city update has created a hole in taxiway Bravo near the A4 bridge at EHAM. Fixing it is too difficult for me, but at least we can ensure that we don’t fall into the tunnel. This mod makes the area into a construction site: https://flightsim.to/addon/106487/eham-works-at-bravo-around-a4-bridge

Make sure to update the NOTAMS for the taxiway closure.
