Yes DD city addon disables the photgrammetry in certain areas of Chicago.
Nice job Asobo…excellent work as always lmao
My first observation was whilst sitting at MSP airport. Where has Minneapolis gone? It should be visible. Take off and fly in that general direction and it eventually appears. Great detail once I am close, but whole cities don’t just pop out of nowhere.
Flew to a local airport I modelled called Benson Field. On Landing, discovered a rock wall at the end of the runway. Further investigation revealed rock walls in the woods, beside highway 61, and then a quick walk around revealed the power poles had been converted into ROCKS in the sky.
Whilst flying around Minneapolis and St Paul, I noticed many of the bridges shimmering as if they can’t make up their mind as to whether to use the update or the original.
Sadly, it is a bit of a mess.
So far Ive seen Chicago, Racine and Milwaukee. The new parts of Chicago look good and downtown looks good but it is missing a section south of downtown and the area around Midway looks only a bit better than before. Colors could be better and so could the buildings. Trees are really problematic in some areas.
Today I flew north along the ‘coast’ (do lakes have coasts?) and I think Racine looks great and Milwaukee seems great. I see some photos above that make me think it must have an issue that I wasn’t aware of.
I was looking at the map planning tomorrows trip and the area round Duluth has something seriously wrong. Madison - my first stop - appears to have some large blurry areas. I see what it looks like when I get there.
I did notice an area with a water issue just south of Milwaukee:
Flew Taog’s Lama out of KMSP yesterday. Could clearly see the downtown buildings from KMSP. Flew along the river and under most of the bridges but I didn’t notice any of the bridges shimmering. I was impressed with the level of detail in and around the cities. Especially the bridge details.
Did you restart the sim after downloading the CU? Just trying to think why our experiences were so different.
Xbox X
I posted some pictures showing some serious issues with this city update (Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago). I also found that Chicago’s photogrammetry is not loading properly.
Chicago’s downtown is not loading in the background. In Chicago, large sections of PG appear or disappear depending on your position or altitude.
Great post and good question! I have yet to fly along the lakefront in CU15, but looking forward to it sometime soon. Cheers!
I took a heli round Chicago, Milwaukee, Duluth, Minnesota, Minneapolis & St Pauls yesterday. I thought it looked really good. Given that PG is probably best enjoyed from 1500-2500 ft, there were still some lovely details like the old trestle swing bridges in Milwaukee and this mural on a building near LaSalle Street station in Chicago.
I think that’s really good for a PG scan.
I noticed that the Chicago skyline wasn’t seen on takeoff to the west at KORD. It shouuld be. I thought it was an LOD issue with my settings but, since others have reported this, I’m wondering if there’s more to it. It is definitely not realistic that the buildings pop in at a fairly short distance away.
I was “drone camera” flying around the Chicago area today. I have several comparison pictures I’ll post in a little bit, but I took the camera out to O’Hare and looked east. Seemed OK to me. I was flying around the city before this, so some of the scenery may have loaded in while I was there, but I would guess if it was an LOD issue, it should have been culled by the time I got to the airport.
We get these three states while West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Upstate NY will never see city updates, and they finally did Duluth and skipped through Pittsburgh PA, Beckley WV, Charleston WV, Rochester NY and Syracuse NY are never going to be updated at this rate
, I wonder how many Microsoft flight sims later will these cities finally get updated ![]()
OK, ten Chicago area images, 5 before and 5 after downloading CU15. I focused on a few areas where the scenery was quite old to see if they had been updated, and except for Sox park (which has not been called US Cellular Field for many many years), I was happy to see a much more modern depiction.
One note, while I did not do a focus on the numerous river bridges downtown and in the areas nearby, the quality of the bridges is significantly improved. In nearly every case, it seems like the hard “box” that extended down to the river is gone. You can actually see under the bridges now, and the quality of the bridges themselves is much better.
So, here are 5 sets of images.
- Sox Park
- Wolf Point
- Skyline
- Wrigley Field Area
- Rosemont (Near O’Hare)
Interestingly if you take the Sox Park 3d view from Bing maps it looks identical to the shots above, even down to the cars in the parking lot…
I assume that’s not from a recent PG capture.
Yeah, it was changed to Guaranteed Rate Field in the fall of 2016. It’s been just “Rate Field” since last year.
Oops.
So the city update is either using ten years old data or didn’t reach as far as 4 miles from the city centre-ish?
Yeah, one or the other. But it looks exactly the same before and after the update, so my guess is it didn’t update that area. Is there a map that shows exactly the areas that were updated? That would be really nice to have.
A possible factor would be what my computer and GPU are capable of providing. I will have to experiment some more, since uninstalling CU 15 did not revert to my being able to see the city from the airport. There must be a far better mesh with this update, but handling objects it can’t fully resolve by changing them into rocks isn’t helpful.
It would be good to understand what was updated for each city/area. I wonder how much of the Mississippi is new PG, a few miles, who knows?
