[Polls] Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Sim Update 5.1 Feedback (PC/Xbox/PS5)

Using a certain historical precedent, if you think su5 of the sim is bad, wait until they reach su16..

Saskatoon to Winnipeg in the tristar.

PG off

Everything medium

Bravoairspace liveries enabled

Lvfr real traffic vehicles enabled

Real airport vehicles enabled

Live weather

Constant use of efb and atc

Performance for my first flight in the tristar was near perfect, slight stutters on climb but it settled all the way to taxiing at Winnipeg. LOD wasn’t too bad leaving Saskatoon but approaching Winnipeg and things started getting blurry, not too extreme but I expected worse especially with the tristar and the constant rain. Ils worked perfectly, though I was flying her on gps only as I can’t get my head around ins navigation just quite yet.

Here’s a couple of minutes near KJFK that shows the nearby pop in and stuttering on Xbox X with 600 Mbps fiber. It certainly wasn’t always like this. This used to be my favorite place to show off the sim. Now I avoid it because it’s so jerky.

This was the first flight after a fresh boot.

Microsoft/Asobo: Please fix the really poor performance in SU5 and SU5.1 on PC. I have a 9800x3D and a 4090, never before have I had VRAM usage over 18GB until now. I have tried like 5 clean installs, driver roll backs, all kinds of different graphics and DLSS rollbacks or downgrades, and I routinely now am stuck in the 50s for FPS and very high VRAM usage. Anecdotally, we feel this is due to PS5 downgrades, which is really terrible for serious flight simmers on PC. I don’t see acknowledgement on your part that you are (a) looking into this or (b) committed to fixing it. PC users deserve better performance and SU5 has killed it.

‘it being due to PS5 downgrades’ is absolute nonsense. PS5 is very limited on memory (just like the xbox variants), so increased VRAM use ‘due to PS5’ doesn’t make any sense in any world.

If you’re running out of VRAM on a 4090, I’d really recommend you take a long critical look at your addons (both community folder stuff and externally running software). If you keep throwing stuff with 4K and 8K textures at everything, you’re bound to run out of VRAM.

  1. Running pretty good performance wise (not really a difference to SU5, still worse than SU4), but horrible pop-in of small objects (smaller plants) at very short range. Didn’t happen in SU4 and SU5. Matters a lot for low-level flying.

  2. Who noticed they ycompletely removed shadows from objects until they are really close? Hardly any airliner on a busy airport has a shadow if it’s further away than about 300 meters. Looks catastrophic.
Even worse: Take off from a busy airport, look down and see the shadows of parked aircraft and buildings pop in only when you are nearly vertically above.

  3. Live weather clouds are extremely degraded, too, as has often been mentioned on this forum.

  4. I inject static aircraft via FSLTL, therefore the extremely late pop-in of AI parked aircraft doesn’t affect me.

9950x3d/3090Ti, all things maxed out, TLOD 250, OLOD 200.
The visual degradation since SU5 is starting to become really, really annoying.

I carried out a couple of test flights on the PMDG B737-800—from LIMC to LIMJ and from LIBR to LICC—on the Xbox Series X (final version .35).
I uninstalled all third-party add-ons, and I have to say the flights went quite well in terms of stuttering; however, the LOD remains unsatisfactory, especially at medium to long ranges.
Some airport vegetation elements along the runways look like they’ve been spray-painted on. The landscape degrades too noticeably with distance during flight, though there is a general improvement in memory usage.
Now, at the end of a flight, I can pan the camera around without stuttering or sudden CTDs.
I only tested flights lasting up to two hours.
One other thing: can anyone using the beta versions explain why the career mode differs so much between the Beta and Final versions?
They seem like two completely different worlds.

The situation has improved somewhat with the large passenger aircraft, but I still encounter “insufficient memory” notifications when using the Boeing 787-10 (default aircraft).

For sure there are issues with 5.1 and it appears that MS/Asobo are struggling to work out where it went wrong post-SU4. Yes, the last 5.1 beta has improved a lot of things for most users but the sad truth of SU5 is that for a lot of users it was a significant backwards step to SU4 in terms of visual fidelity (the aggressive dynamic LOD adjustments). Whilst we’ve regained some ground, for a lot of users SU4 would still be preferable.

On my Xbox Series X, I’m actually seeing things that are markedly better than SU4 and a few things aren’t quite as good…many of those happen when flying challenging aircraft (memory resources wise) I would probably just about vote to keep 5.1 and move on. Just..

I think it is important to work as a community to get improvements - I’m an ex PC user who switched to the Xbox due to limited budget. By most people’s definition I would probably be classed as a serious simmer, with more than 2000hrs of flight time over the years…serious simmers aren’t limited to one platform type - and we all have individual needs and use cases, from the lowest end systems to the highest end.

One thing I do notice with experience is that newbies (and I did it too at first) think - perhaps because of the marketing) that they are entitled to and can “have it all”. But we really can’t - this is an immense simulation world with a huge array of addons to go with it. In a nutshell, you have to trade eye candy with performance, MSFS will bring any PC to its knees. On Xbox we have to do more trading than a high end PC and with a lot less settings to tweak under the bonnet. But the trades are the same whatever the platform - of course will be the same for the new PS users too..

We should listen to everybody and not spread divisive misinformation- we are all in the same boat actually - and the bigger and more inclusive our community, the more powerful becomes our voice. We shouldn’t turn on each other…

Yes, did that. And the config-bar is a lot smaller! Thanks! Selecting the mouse works now. But now i have to find the culprit since i have 97 folders inside the communityfolder..

I personally feel that object LOD around airports is potentially the best it has ever been with 5.1 but terrain LOD, especially at the destination airport is definitely the worst it has ever been on series X

I’m getting CTD every single flight now. Never happened before. No warning. First time on approach, second time panning around when I landed…. Please fix your game Asobo. It’s unacceptable with this performance.

  • Drop in FPS.
  • Blurry all over the place, except at Airports . This is absolutly not accetable. I think it can injury your health, then all the time looking to a blurry picture forces yours eyes to focus it. The first sintom of it, you get tired.
PLEASE fix it and very quick.

I’m having a really frustrating time with the game on PS5. Some planes work great, but others simply won’t brake during landing even when I apply the brakes, or they just crash. Sometimes planes parked on the apron block the path to the runway, or runway signs (the yellow ones) appear right in the middle of the strip without displaying any info—just a blank yellow sign. Forklifts on the tarmac drive in circles or crash into my aircraft. The loading screen takes forever—I wait nearly 20 minutes every day, even though I have a 2 Gbit fiber connection. Flying helicopters is incredibly difficult; maintaining steady forward flight is a struggle—you end up spinning in circles and crashing. Handling crosswinds with a controller is a disaster. Yesterday, I flew the F/A-18 from Zurich to Berlin, but when I tried to turn, I crashed into a forest. Isn’t there a way to “return” or reset instead of having to take off from Zurich over and over again? MFS team, you really need to work on these issues, please.

I hope things improve so the game can actually be enjoyed.

ATM i am getting permanently CTDs on two different Xbox series x consoles with 3rd party Planes. I had never CTDs in msfs24.

For me, in house ATC continues to be the weakest link. What’s with the 12000ft fetish the controller has on approach, very few miles from the airport. the beta tests were a bit better, I don’t know what happened in 5.1 for general release. I know I could go with an add-on, but would really like to see Asobo get its act together in this area. I do see improvements in other areas. I still think it would be wiser to have the sim offered in different versions, to be able to maximize the potential of each machine (PC/Xbox/PS5)

I’ve been on MSFS since June 2023 on XboxX, and I’ve had many happy hours flying on 2020.
I can’t say the same for 2024. I have to admit there is good flying to be had but overall the sim falls well short of the mark and my simming experience at the moment is very negative. I bought my Xbox just for MSFS but I’ve found myself installing other game titles.
I was hoping by now that the sim would be running satisfactorily as each SU was released but that is not case.
What does wind me up is that DLC is released in the Marketplace I’ve paid good money for and some DLC are not optimised enough for Xbox. I have to ask the question do some of the DLC get enough testing on Xbox.
For me on Xbox MSFS is in a bad place and I have no desire to spend more money till things improve.
I hope things do improve so I can spend and support the sim again but I do wonder if Xbox has reached its limits with MSFS 2024…

Yeah I’ve noticed the spray painting. Like someone has gone along the edge of runways with a spray gun spraying white emulsion paint everywhere :joy:

I wouldn’t say it’s in a bad place or good place on xbox but a medium place and this or that takes it one way or another.

After some hours into SU 5.1 i must say there are some annoying micro stutters and fps dips when panning the camera or just flying over certain areas. It can also vary from Session to Session… its nothing dramatic but still annoying.
