[Polls] World Update XVIII: Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

I have no idea why - it looks like it has nothing to do with the DACH global update or REX but the black squares where trees should show suddenly are all over the place, even outside ot the updated countries. I had this problem a long time ago but I forgot what the culprit was.

It happens for example if two tree modifying addons are installed simultaneously…

Hi,
For me, this WU is very well done in most regions. Thanks to photogrammetry, many structures are now displayed in such a way that you can recognize them, you can better recognize weirs and run-of-river power plants on rivers and much more. What has been mentioned here more often, however, are the trees. Trees grow where it is green, for example on alpine pastures above the tree line, on meadows, on fields, on waterways and even on bridges. It is essential that we do some more work on this. There are not as many trees growing in the whole of Europe as in Germany, Austria and Switzerland put together.

If you look at the ICAO Map of Switzerland you will see that Interlaken is listed as Heliport only. No fixed aircraft fly there any longer.

Paus and turn off photogrammetry, fly a few meters, then turn on photogrammetry again.
Better?
No?
Change aircraft!

That photogrammetry is clearly not fully loaded. Your Internet connection might be too slow or is being throttled. Try caching the area you want to fly in, drive space permitting.

Usually it’s not the internet connection/speed but the involved (MS/Asobo) servers.

I have found that now trees are suddenly in different places than before. One of my fav airfield in Switz. has a ROW of trees right down the middle of the runway. I had to take off on the grass taxiway.

Solution! I had installed a mod by ORBX (cost me about 11 bucks) called Global Trees. It has nicer grass than the default. After deleting the mod in the Community folder, the black squares disappeared.

I know, I was there with the air force. But we don’t mind having old airfields in the Sim. Same for the old Frutigen field which existed years ago. I agree on the tree issue, though. In an above post I mentioned that they can now grow on a runway.

Hi,
After playing around with the new PG sceneries of WU 18 for a while, I have uninstalled World update XVIII again in the Content Manager.
I find that the overall experience is so much better without it when flying in Austria, Switzerland and Germany.
As an added benefit the excessive trees at LOWS airport are now
somehow gone. Don’t know how or why, but I really like it.
Just my personal opinion.

Which is remarkable because it is called worud UPDATE, not world REGRESSION, what it is… and still not a single word from any dev about the issues…

Hello Simmers,

As of today, I have spent 1108 hours in MSFS, and I’m always grateful for the free World Updates, which I always look forward to.

But WU18 is giving me some headaches:

I’ve made it a habit to test new aircraft, their features, and procedures on certain ā€œreference routes.ā€ Since I’m from the Stuttgart area, these routes start from EDDS with destinations at LEPA, LIPZ, or LIMJ. All three routes cross the Alps, and I’ve flown these routes dozens of times. Until World Update 18, I considered the foothills and the Alps to be some of the most beautiful areas in the simulator.

Unfortunately, as others have reported, World Update 18 introduced widespread textures with a heavy green tint that is visible even during night flights through the cloud cover. Additionally, many textures are very blurry, and there are many areas where color transitions are harsh and inconsistent. The Alpine region was definitely more homogeneous and much closer to reality before World Update 18. I never felt the need for better elevation data before the update. I would rather have the old textures back, even if it means poorer elevation data.

Before Sim Update 15, I struggled with stutters despite having a high-end system, but after SU15, I had the best, smoothest experience ever in the simulator. Since WU18, old stuttering issues have returned.

As a software developer myself, I would like to believe the argument that a purely geometric model update wouldn’t impact performance in areas not covered by WU18. However, the fact is that overall performance in the sim has worsened since WU18. This includes the return of stuttering and blurry textures even in areas not related to WU18. And before anyone ist aksing: Yes I also tested it without any addons active, with an emptied Community Folder and with all the other tweaking like Rolling Cache off vs. on, DX11 vs. DX12, etc.

Can anyone else confirm these observations?
