Hello friends -
I had been considering giving up my G2 for a TrackIR setup due to lack of diopter and multitasking. Had some great replies to my thread discussing that topic and learned a few things, too.
I’ve gotten a browser window into the sim using follow me, but still working on how to flip the mouse between the two. Yesterday, someone contributed that they had prescription lens inserts, and that changed my perspective.
So, I am looking for user suggestions and feedback on the following:
- Which style do you have/prefer (single piece or dual construction)
- What brand do you prefer
- Did you consider alternatives and if so why did you pick the one you did
- Do they stay firmly attached
- Did your FOV increase using the inserts vs your glasses
- Have you had any problems that should be known such as fogging, scratching, protrusion, flimsiness, poor finish, etc
- Edit: Has the sweetspot gotten larger/appear larger?
Thank you very much for your feedback. This forum has helped convince me to keep my G2 and I’m hopeful this is the last piece of the usability puzzle. (I’m still getting black screens even after fw update so that’s still a tbd, but just a few hours with a browser in the sim showed me that with some more work, this could be usable for me)

Thanks I’d like to follow up here so maybe others can comment too:
WRT construction style, I was inquiring if the lens is attached to the mount or removable with magnets, for example (single vs double). I do know that each eye gets its own lens.
WRT fov, are you referring to the frankenfov replacement gasket? I’m wondering specifically if the fov increases bc you’re no longer wearing your glasses all the time.
Thank you for the strap suggestion. I like how that looks to cable manage the straps and a counterweight is always good.
Cheers
Yes with VR Optician each lens just fits over both built-in lenses. Like shaped rubber cups that are snug fitting so no movement at all.
I’m using DanolsDesigns gasket with a half width cushion so yes my eyes are substantially closer to the screens with no eyeglasses to press on my temple area and also no frame obstruction at the outer limits like with some frames.
Did you ever measure the new FOV you have? I bet that’d be a very substantial number.
I also have the gasket mod but have not been able to use yet bc of fitment issues with my eyeglasses.
Thanks for the feedback on the lenses. I am going to get an order in soon. I am eager to get rid of the “pinch” that you mentioned.
No not measured but my perception is yes quite substantial indeed.
VR Optician with Zeiss lenses & Blue light filters, DanolsDesign gasket, half width cushions and Pro Balance Apache strap - each of these help to reduce all sorts of head strain.
Sure seems that way. Spending an extra $200 or so to make this comfortable is definitely an investment.
I’m happy with the vr optician lenses. But I have to use the goggles extension with it. Somehow sharper with them. I use the Quest 2 by the way.
Quick question…
On the Danol’s website he writes that his gasket doesn’t work with glasses / prescription inserts as there’s not enough room, yet your posts suggest it does. Are you using the standard one, or did you contact them and have them make one with more space (which he says he can do)? I have the WIDMOvr prescription inserts that snap on to the lenses.
I had to check that I’m currently using Danol’s gasket and not one of the others I have and can confirm it is Danol’s. I presume it’s a standard one because I didn’t request a special order. My eyes are about as close as possible to the screens so maybe some lens inserts are too large. Also I’m using a half width cushion so with a standard cushion there should be enough eye clearance for other lens variants.

I have considered going to VR.
The cost is significant.
I wear Glasses (spectacles).
Now there is an additional cost for Prescription lenses?
Yes extremely expensive and sadly prohibitively expensive when scaled to global affordability. I hope that changes quickly.
I’d say that the cost of lens inserts would be a very small proportion of the total cost to upgrade to VR but for me all those comfort mods I mentioned are effective, good value & worthwhile.

I am surprise that your eyelashes don’t touch the lenses if you use that !
Do they come with a case for storage? If so do you have a photo? I don’t see mention on their site.
Hmm that’s possible. If they get in the way I’ll just wax them
Yes a hard case is included.

Thanks - I ended up placing an order with them.
FWIW, I just got mine from VR Optician as well, and they’re a game changer for me. I used to squeeze in some crappy glasses, or slap in disposable contacts, but having these in there all the time is fantastic. Stupid that I waited so long.
That’s great to hear. I really dislike putting in contact lenses if I’m wearing glasses on a given day. They’re not uncomfortable but I prefer to be able to just slap the headset on and use it. That’s one of the biggest obstacles to regular use and I can’t wait for it to be overcome.
I have vr optician on a G1 and thrilled with them. agreed should have pulled the trigger day 1.
Update: received my VR Optician inserts in under a week from Germany. Pretty easy to install and while I haven’t flown yet, I did browse WMR and WOW! I can see!!!
Talk about a MAJOR quality of life upgrade. I need to refit my headset now. Much lighter, less pinch, more breathable, not seeing fog yet.
One thing, though, when I was cleaning the G2 lenses, it looks like there is a smudge or a coating that was removed and almost looks like physical damage and does cause slight blur.
Anyone have this issue?
Thanks for the great suggestions!
