Problems with savings most of the settings

Sorry guys for a long message. This is the email I’ve sent to the support, but decided to put it here as well. I read some other people’s entries about similar issues, but their solutions didn’t work for me. I hope there are some smarter people than me, who would be able to provide a solution.

Hi,

I have several problems with the game and I don’t know if they are related or not, but they definitely are preventing me from enjoying it.

The game doesn’t save almost any settings (Windows 10 with Steam verion of the game).

I have only official content and no mods.

I have the administrator rights.

The cloud status in Steam game’s profile says “Up to date”. The game’s verion is 1.29.30.0.

The game starts every time as if I was starting it for the first time. I need to go through the basic setup every time I start the game. Once in the game I can access the game features ( I haven’t tried them all yet, but basic flights and missions seem to be working).

Also every time I get notification that new update is required, but the content manager claims that everything is up to date. When I allow the game to get the updates, it goes through the initial pages and then displayes an empty update page from where I can only exit by alt\tab and closing the application.

Some of the graphic settings seem to save (like resolution and V-sync) but, for example anisotropic filtering and lens flare don’t.

The main problem is with changing conroller settings.

I use Thrustmuster T1600 and Thrustmuster Throttle. Tried the same witm xbox controller with no avail.

I can make changes to the profile and they work in the game until I quit it.

Weird thing is that I cannot scroll through the profiles I created and it always comes back to “Default”, I can see the names of the other profiles I created briefly being displayed when trying to scroll through them, but they immidiately change back to “Default”. Seems to me that they’re not being saved at all as if there were some permissions issues

I looked through the internet and tried few solutions but to no avail.

Xbox services are on auto

One of the solution that worked for some was to delete the content of C:\Users\Michal\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightDashboard_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

There were 2 folders inside which I deleted, but it didn’t change anything, and from then on the folder is empty and new entries are not being created.

All the folders in that path are “Read only” . I attempted to change those settings (untick “Read Only” but they do not save either

Something seems to prevent the settings to be even written I reinstalled the game,a nd manually removed Microsoft Flight folders from C:\Users\Michal\AppData local and roaming. They have been reinstalled but there is no content any more in C:\Users\Michal\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightDashboard_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache Can anyone help me to find the solution for me, please?

Thanks

Are you sure none of the upper folders e.g. C:\Users is not set to read only?

Thanks for your reply. Indeed the Microsoft folders in Users Local and Roaming are Read Only, but I cannot change that for some reason. I untick the setting, save it, but when I check it again it is still Read Only. Any ideas how to change that?

At a guess some security permissions have been changed, without knowing what rather than spending time sifting through them I would simply reinstall Windows from a downloaded iso (having already backed up my MSFS packages to an external drive)

The thought of Windows reinstall for one game terrifies me…

Well then try a Windows reset first, this should keep everything in place however I have no idea if it will actually cure your problem

PS. Have you tried ticking C:Users read only, applying it and then unticking it again?

can you explain what you assume " Microsoft.FlightDashboard " is ? ( I know that only from some of these xbox insider stuff )

The correct folders for settings is:

*C:\Users_username_\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator*

In this you have to check whether you have sufficents rights, in special the UserCfg file.

PS : with Steam you have nothing to do with all that xbox install folders

C:\Users\Michal\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightDashboard_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache

That was quoted as one of the culprits of the problem by one of the Microsoft technicians, who was giving this advice to someone with a similar issue to mine. I just have followed that advice.

C:\Users_username_\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator is Read only and despite the fact that I am the administrator I can not change the Read Only setting. After applying and pressing ok it comes back to Read Only

I still pretty sure, thats the xbox-insider-app.. whatever the technican had in mind as he gave the hint

What kind of antivirus solution you have installed ?

Kaspersky Total Security. I checked permissions and MSFS doesn’t seem to be restricted
Also, I tried with Kaspersky off and it still didn’t help

Kaspersky.. hmmm.. does it have such horrible feature like “safe my files for changes” ? This will often still be enabled , also in case you switch the AV solution to off.

You can also try to remove the whole folder ( backup ) “..Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator” . Is it possible ?

( In each case its safe to delete cache,DCE,Scenery** , so you not need to backup these folders. )

And how you start the application - in Steam Menu , or with a Link on Desk ? ( in case first one, try to start from Steam Menu ) and not start the game as admin ( not set the special ‘as admin’ flag ) .

I don’t seem to see this option. Would you know where it is?

ähmm.. cant help here, because I not own Kaspersky

I mentioned the “removal of the folder” , because you can in that way test, whether the folder will also auto-recreated “from a piece of software” on your pc. If not, then MSFS create these also new at the first start, but then you need possible start setting from point-zero ( may also some settings come from steam cloud save ).

Also another check might be is, whether you can access other folders within the “Roaming” folder.

EDIT: checked quickly kasperky doc, seems they call it “encryption protection”. Disabling needs a windows restart.

@michallesio and have you checked the rights on the files or on the folder ? The blue marker on the folder might be missleading.

So here’s the development. I have received the email from the support:
"Hi Michal,

Thanks for contacting Microsoft Flight Simulator Support.

First, please make sure the Xbox Services are running automatically.

In the Windows search bar, type "Services"
Select "Services"
Scroll down to the bottom. Double-click on each entry for Xbox and make sure none of those services are not disabled or set to manual. Set everything to "Automatic".

This issue can also happen when the config file cannot be overwritten. To fix this issue, please do the following:

Find the config file "UserCfg.opt"
Right-click on UserCfg.opt
Select Properties > General tab
Uncheck Read-only"

Here’s my reply:
"Hi,

all the Xbox services run on “automatic”.

The “UserCfg.opt” the Read-only is unchecked, however, the folder C:\Users\Michal\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator is Read-only and I am not able to change it, despite the fact that I have administrator rights.

I was able to save the flight on my PC and load it in the game with no problems (the file can be found in C:\Users\Michal\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator, so I seem to have some access to this folder) , but when I tried to save it to Xbox cloud, it was showing the saving process, but I was not able to load it as it was saying that the file doesn’t exist.

Still can not save any settings , other than screen resolution and V-sync. The rest of the graphic settings revert to default every time I leave the game. So too the controller settings

I am running out ideas"

Can anyone throw any good ones?

I’ve deleted Kaspersky just to see what happens. I am on Windows Defender at the moment. I’ve also made sure that the current profile is set as administrator through CMD commands. I still cannot change the “Read Only” status of any folder in AppData
What else can I do?

Your Windows cloud security settings seem to be amiss. I have cloud services disabled so cannot help.

Now I am almost certain, that it has something to do with cloud , because I was able to make a save on my PC in Read only folder in AppData, and was able to load that flight with no problem. It doesn’t seem to be saving anything related to cloud, like, what I found out just today, training process. I did few basic tutorials just to see if my progress is going to be saved, but nah…
Can anyone have some insights into problem with the cloud saving in MSFS?

I’m pretty certain the problem sits on your PC or these boards would be full of complaints.

Whether ‘C: Users’ read only is ticked or unticked does not necessarily mean everything else below is so actually tick it, apply to all sub folders and files and then untick it and apply to all subfolders and files, leave it in an unticked condition. If that still doesn’t work then carefully check all of your Windows Privacy and Security settings … Also if you have at sometime messed with the Group Policy Editor I suggest you return it to it’s default condition.

BTW C:Users in not the only location for MSFS and Xbox files

Sorry I wasn’t clear enough. I wasn’t blaming the cloud services as a whole. I was just stating that it has to do something with cloud, and I understand that it’s probably on my side.
I was just curious if it is possible to get that connection working.
On the side note, I’d really love to have the option to save everything on my computer and cloud as a back up or second option

Lol … being pretty old I’m quite the opposite. Even with nothing to hide the thought of possibly putting my whole computering life on show to the NSA, GCHQ or even any capable hacker just angers me. Even if I know keeping out of the cloud wouldn’t stop them I don’t want to make it any easier than it is already.
