PS5 & Xbox: Memory management completely broken after SU5

I completely agree with your perspective. While hardware limitations can pose significant challenges, developers have a responsibility to ensure their games run smoothly—especially when players have invested in high-end consoles like the Xbox Series X.

For two years, I experienced daily black screens, crashes to desktop (CTDs), and memory issues on Xbox, only to find stability after switching to PC in December 2023. The difference is night and day, particularly when using complex addons or intricate base content. The fact that these long-standing instability issues on Xbox are now being extended to PS5—without a comprehensive solution—is not just frustrating, it’s unacceptable.

Xbox users, who have paid a premium for both the console and the games, deserve a product that works as intended. Prolonged technical hurdles are not an excuse for a subpar experience. A patch or a clear roadmap for resolution should be a top priority. Anything less is a disservice to the community.

Fully Agree - My own view is this.
The problem isn’t that the Xbox can’t run the sim - it can but very obviously not with the level of graphical fidelity that can be achieved with a high or very high end PC.
The real limitation of Xbox - and now the PS5 - is that you can’t any make ‘under the bonnet’ tweaks or adjustments that used to keep me busy when I had a mid range PC to worry about. So we rely on MS/Asobo to do a bit of QA for us and give us a baseline we can run with smoothly - and perhaps a couple of tuneable settings to go with it. We have to put our trust in MS/Asobo to do this as part of their QA for every SU. Unfortunately it often feels as if that trust has been misplaced. This time the beta observations of many were ignored - and the poor PS5 community (new users) are worst off and MS/Asobo have given them the very worst impression of their competence. Goodness knows how many paying customers this will have cost them…

It would be a very quick and easy win for MS/Asobo to put this right - but unfortunately their track record shows us that whilst they are great at coming up with lots of new ideas and content, they don’t have the necessary eye for detail to complete and thoroughly test any of it before release.

A change of culture here would make a world of difference

Many of us can’t magically get the funds to buy or purchase a high end PC.
Good for you.

So far I have had successful flights in
PMDG B737-900 (Installed)
PMDG B777-200LR. (Installed)
FlightFx Hondajet. ( Streamed)

No failures or memory low messages
Haven’t tried any others
Xbox Series X
16GB RC
PG off
Traffic OFF
multiplayer OFF
Live Weather ON
4 aircraft installed
8 third party adding streamed
I was expecting a disaster from all the comments but it hasn’t been that way for me so far.

How long are these flights?

I can conform every Issue on the PS5.
Rebuild Data Base etc. is no fix,… it works for maybe 1 Mission, thats it

Horrible Stutter, framedrops, crashing avioniks and many more memory problems.
Actually, the SIM is unplayble on the Base PS5.
Its such a shame what MS done here with SU5, we on PS5 had no chance for a good beta test, and thats now is the result.

Apparently the marketplace being empty is because of PS QA not Asobo or the devs. Consoles are a problem in that regard but I think. PS might just have it worse that Xbox at this point

Good question
From less than an hour to over 7 hrs
45 mins - Flight FX Hondajet KLUK-KBNA
1hr 28 - PMDG B737-900 KDFW-KATL
7hr 18 - PMDG B777-200LR EGLL-OMDB

after SU5 I see this

It may be that only well optimised aircraft work at the moment.
Perhaps - only as a workaround- we should list aircraft, route and flight duration of successful flights completed gate to gate with no memory low messages or WASM crashes?

We are in a place where SU4 would seem like a big upgrade.
Going backwards like this is a totally unacceptable situation.
And it’s even worse for the pS5 users who are new customers.
We need much stronger QA on Xbox and now PS5 as we don’t have the “under the bonnet” tuning capabilities of PC… but even on the PC side, the lack of (seemingly any) QA applied to MSFS2024 is lamentable really.

I will troubleshoot when I have time it could be enabled traffic, ATC, streaming AC any combo of each. I say if you turn everything off and use a downloaded AC and still have problems nothing will solve it from our end

PMDG over 7hrs is something at least and installed

While we are concerned about the reports from console users, I have completed a few flights on Xbox X using the 737-600 and 777F without any hiccups. But that was on a system without any additional DLC, so not entirely representative. On PC, we have not seen any uptick in support, so it seems relatively stable on that platform.

The hardest part for 3rd party devs is that there is so little we can do for customers with problems. If the SDK indicates new ways of working, we gladly look at those, but until then, we are poking in the dark (very much like the WASM crash issue).

The question is rather simple: Is it possible to run the msfs on our consoles like the ps5?

No? Then we get a refund! In that case, they didn’t deliver what we PAID for. This is means potential lawsuits.

Yes? (This is what is more likely, since the msfs is also targeted to the xbox series s with only 12 gb RAM, while the ps5 and the series x have 16 GB - at least the ps5 and series x should do it with those 4gb more headspace) then the devs should get their stuff together and give memory management fix before SU6… and we on console deserve a proper quality assurance. We paid the same money like our friends on PC. So we deserve the same depth of testing.

I’ve been having successful flights in the PMDG 737-800, 777F and 777-300ER. I’m currently about to descend into third party Hong Kong from Heathrow. So 12 hours flying without issues. Yesterday I flew Heathrow to JFK in the 300ER again without a problem. Once the avionics load in and stay loaded in, once in the air you can guarantee it will be fine. It just seems to be when first starting a flight, the SIM almost loads too much scenery and then the avionics push it over the edge, and you run out of memory.

I don’t have any DLC and yet the bug is there — on almost every flight.

Best,

The mentioned planes are all 3rd party. These are not yet available on ps5. We are currently tied to the ones we bought with the game by its EXPENSIVE Editions. So we require them to be working! We paid 100 - 230 € for them… not having them working half a year after game release is not acceptable.

Exactly! If the product doesn’t work as advertised, then a refund is the bare minimum. We paid for a functional game, not a beta test riddled with instability. At this point, failing to deliver a fix isn’t just poor service—it’s a breach of consumer trust. And yes, when companies refuse to honor their end of the bargain, lawsuits are a very real next step.

To be fair: we should give them time to react and deliver a fix. But an internal taskforce on that very issue is the bare minimum, that I’d expect.

The game was not released as an early access or beta… it is paid as a AAA+ Title as full release. And we are half a year AFTER that release on ps5. Even worse for our xbox friends.

Also I request a dev statement within this businessweek. The game is broken. What is the timeline to a proper fix? Get your memory management running. Unflyable planes with offline or ever rebooting avionics are not acceptable! The next required step is a dev reaction with a harmonized timeline when a PROPPER FIX will be in place (this means not: going back to the continously rebooting avionics of su4. I mean a propper fix, with highest RAM-prioritization of ALL avionics subroutines (from displays to all Autopilot and autothrust mechanisms).

This is business! We have a problem. MS, react now!

Some of the earlier Sim updates had hot fixes not long after release, and I would be very surprised if we don’t get one in the next week or so, especially being such a regression of SU4. The timing of release wasn’t very good either, as it was released just before a bank holiday weekend, so nothing will be done now or announced until tomorrow at the earliest.
