Quest 2 & 3 settings GUIDE - FS2024 and FS2020 tips & tricks

Thank you for posting the topics you talk about, this makes it clear that this is something worth watching.

Absolutely no need to apologize! As a newcomer to VR, and a retired educator, I for one found your video very helpful and informative. All videos that I had seen prior to yours would say OK here are the settings I used and the changes made, with no explanation or comparisons that would result, and as we all know, everyone has a different opinion on what to use. I’ve even seen threads where people have been arguing over settings.

Yours was the first vid that I have seen that fully explained and demonstrated each change that you made; at least I understand a bit better what each setting does, and showing the results of each change visually is a very powerful educator. Also, your presentation was such that I didn’t feel like a stupid person for not knowing a lot of this stuff prior; you were not “talking down” to me (another thing that I experienced in other videos), but rather you were educating me in a very respectful manner, and that I also greatly appreciate.

Well done, sir, and thank you for taking the time to enlighten those of us who are learning.

i have a 5800x3d, 3080, and quest 2 - i always struggled with the link cable and VD was the saving grace. There is a definite improvement of the 40 series cards over the 30series ones - and this is where VD comes to assist us, it works with minimal effort. However, I’m still going to try the link cable to understand a bit how the parameters work, it doesn’t look like we’ll ever be able to have msfs without tweaking the settings - so excellent explanation job by TadeuPrimo :+1:, it is the first time that I’m seeing a detailed video on what each settings mean in plain english.

Glad you enjoy

I wish. my computer can barely support it

What is your setup?

A rtx 4060 32gig ram, i5 12400f (I will be upgrading shortly to i7-12700f or 13700f if they go on sale)

You next upgrade should probably be a better gpu. A rtx4060 is fine for 2D but pretty weak for decent VR. A rtx4070 or better (preferably rtx4070ti or better) would be a better upgrade than a new cpu imho.

Maybe wait until more nvidia 5000 series gpu’s are out there and look for a good used rtx4070-4080, or maybe a used rtx3080 (if your psu is at least 800w) gpu. Your $'s so your decision of course.

Oh ok good to know, I was getting bottle necked because of my cpu so I thought that was the cause. So ur saying that cpu isn’t the issue it’s just my graphics card?

I think both are pretty weak but your GPU is currently your weakest link imho.

The only way to know for sure is to use a tool to see your usage and or frame time for your CPU and GPU during gameplay. MSFS has one built in that will tell you those figures. Of the top of my head I can’t tell you how to enable it, but it isn’t hard. Lookup MSFS dev mode and you should find something to help you there.

My educated guess on your question would be that your GPU is the bottleneck when running VR. The 4060 is a low - mid tier card, VR is very demanding on GPUs. For example my system is a 7800X3d with a RTX 4080 Super and my GPU is still the bottleneck by some margin when using my Q3. If you can afford a 4080 or 5080 that would be more ideal for VR. Even then your CPU might not be the bottleneck when using VR. VR makes your GPU render 2 high res screens where as you are typically rendering one medium to high res screen, For example a 4k monitor’s resolution is 3480x2460, The quest 3 is 2064x2208, but now multiply that by 2. You now have to render 4128x4416 vs the 4k res of 3480x2460. Not only that but there is more rendering happening do to the nature of a VR enviroment.

I see, unfortunately, I think the 4080 super is out of my budget even tho it’s crazy compared to the 4060!
I attached a photo of my FPS using low graphics, low res, and the osobo default a320. On vr I get 15 fps… when I’m not using vr and in 2d mode I get 25-30fps.

So to clarify if I am doing VR the GPU will bottleneck the CPU (especially if I upgrade to the i7-13700f)
however if I just use 2D mode without vr the CPU will not get bottlenecked by the GPU? (sorry not the best with PC stuff)

@halomaster18988 There’s something really wrong with your PC.

I was able to run the FS2020 in VR with my i5-9600k and an GTX1660… Here a video to prove you

With this resolution that you’re in, your PC must run with no issues, unless there’s something wrong with windows or driver.

I ended up with the 4060ti 16gb version and I find it works well with VR on my Quest 3 which is probably because of the 16gb memory size. I looked seriously at the higher versions but the power requirements shot up with them and my home is fully solar/battery off grid electric. The 4060 series is really amazing at how little power it draws compared to the work it does, much less than the 3060ti I previously used. Now I’m on 1080p monitors. I might be singing a different tune if I increase to 1440.

thanks for this

I find myself going round in circles trying to get the best from my system - Quest 3 and 4070 card. theres base settings in oculus quest, optional overrides & enhancements in SideQuest, Oculus debug tool, Oculus tray tool, OpenXR Toolkit, Virtula Desktop settings, DLSS tweaks, and of course in-game graphics settings. It’s a nightmare. I’d love to know which ones I should ignore, of if any of these will work against eachother to cancel out any benefits.

Yep, very easily done.

In all honesty, you are best off by starting with the things that you actually need for VR to run and then look at other stuff later on to see if they can improve anything else.

The reason being is that each PC and its setup is unique so it is very rare that one change will work for all.

So start by making sure that you are setup up correctly in Meta Quest Link.
You mention Virtual Desktop so you must have bought it and there are various settings in there that can be used to adjust what you experience, so look for guides on its options there are many.

I would personally install OpenXR Toolkit, even if you don’t use it at first. There are a lot of tweaks in there that can be useful. The one thing that I would do with it at first is switch on the FPS display so you can see what you are getting in game.
Remember that it show raw fps so if you switch on SpaceWarp you will be getting double that rate in actuality.

I don’t bother with SideQuest nor DLSSTweaks, since the nvidia drivers came out with DLSS4, and to be honest it is pointless for VR anyway.

The other apps are what I would call optional and only use them once you have finished making changes with the others.
Again, choose one and look for settings guides on the individual app.

It will be time consuming but you should slowly improve what you have.
