Just noticed quest 3 on sale for £409.

Should i make the move from hp reverb g2 as that will be unusable soon after windows update.

My pc at moment,

Rtx 3090ti
Ryzen 9 7900x
32gb ddr5

Getting constant fps46 with g2
All settings ultra, dlss quality
Tlod 185
Olod 100

Do i need spare battery, headstrap, link cable.
Can you wear glasses with it same as i can with g2

Not too interested in spending £1,000 on a headset.

I have a Q3 (3080TI i9 11900K) and I think it’s the best headset ATM for that money.
More expensive headsets are a waste of money IMHO.
I’ll wait for better generations to come.

Battery: runs out pretty quickly but I have the load cable attached to my chair when I need it. Easier than swapping batteries all the time.
Link cable: I use air link with Virtual Desktop (sync spacewarp) and TAA which works pretty well for me. (maybe DLSS has improved in the meantime. Haven’t used t for months)
Headstrap: Try default before buying another. I cursed it the first 2 weeks but got used to it. Nevertheless, most people find it horrible.(and maybe they’re right)

Your G2 will work until you update Windows to 24H2. AFAIK that will be an optional update for some time to come after it’s released later this year.

That said, I hear the Q2 has superior graphics, so it’s a matter of whether you’re unhappy with the quality of the G2 VR experience.

I have a G2 as well, and my plan is to sell it now since it will be almost impossible to sell down the road once 24H2 is released. I probably won’t get much for it, but it’s something… I’m waiting until the next gen Crystal Light to get into VR. I don’t use my G2 much at all since I find myself more comfortable in a 2D cockpit. In certain use cases nothing beats VR, though.

If it’s on Amazon or another reputable seller that allows returns I’d say go for it, I jumped ship after my 3rd G2 cable failure and never looked back (and I hated the Q2). I use Virtual Desktop (check WiFi/ wired requirements) I like the simplicity, I think youkll be presently surprised and it’s a super flexible stand alone unit

If you don’t mind a compressed video signal then go for Q3. I’ve just pre-ordered Pimax Light because my G2 developed a dead pixel right in the middle of the sweet spot.

Good point. The lack of a DisplayPort connection keeps me from wanting a Quest 3. For many folks it doesn’t matter.

My Quest 3 is locked in low resolution mode.
Just be aware that it could happen…
Meta knows this bug since end of 2023 and there is still no solution…

I have a Q3 and it’s ok, but there is a massive bug that will lock it into battery saver mode. The biggest tell is that it will be in the lowest resolution regardless of your sim settings. The reason it’s so problematic is this bug will survive a factory reset. Some people have been lucky and cleared it after multiple resets, but I’ve done over 10 of them and I’m still affected. It’s also been affecting some people with brand new headsets right out of the box. Meta is well aware of it and supposedly working on a fix, but this has been going on since last year already. Once fixed, it should be pretty amazing.

If you do get it, I would recommend a new facial interface. The OEM one was kind of rough feeling to me, and I much prefer the leatherette material. I have the AMVR brand, which feels better and also has a nose flap to help decrease light leakage. I also recommend the elite strap, or one from a third party for the better comfort. I have a Kiwi elite style strap with a secondary battery. That, combined with the facial interface has greatly increased comfort. You may want to consider a battery strap for the better front to back weight balancing if nothing else. If you plan to use the VR controllers for gaming, I recommend the Kiwi controller covers for better comfort and more secure hand strap (I basically need it because I play Beat Saber a lot on it). The speakers actually sound pretty good, but are hurt big time by being open air. They make clip on covers for them to isolate the sound better, but I haven’t tried one yet. I do know that cupping my hand over them makes a tremendous improvement, but that obviously isn’t a solution. Lol. A lot of people will use ear buds instead.

You don’t need all of those accessories, but they do really improve the experience. I don’t wear glasses, so I can’t help you there.

With your system, a Q3 is a good option imho. Once you get one please try my Link/Air Link settings suggestions;

I use the Meta Q3 battery headset and it works very well for me with my 140x40mm glasses. If I need more than 3hrs runtime I use an external battery pack with a short 1m battery cable. I use the Romoss 10000mahr 30w pack with a 1m usb-c cable and this works great for me. Search your local Amazon store for these.

While there is no doubt that dedicated DP wired pcvr headsets will give you the very best PCVR results, with the right setup/settings, the Q3 can give you very good results imho. The fact that you can also get great wireless PCVR results using Air Link (my preference) or Virtual Desktop, is just another bonus!

For MSFS, a displayport HMD is far preferable IMO. If I were you and didn’t want to break the bank I’d get a Crystal Light or used Aero, possibly downscaling until you can upgrade your GPU. Some people (usually those who haven’t tried better HMDs) will disagree with this, but a couple of extra hundred dollars is well worth the huge increase in fidelity and stability IMO.

But yeah Q3 is probably best bang for your buck all things considered. But displayport is so worth it over streaming/compression IMO, at least for sims.

I looked at crystal light, spoke to them and told no stock for headset and speakers for 10 weeks, also adding import tax to uk.
Will be over £1,000.00

Pimax has a distribution centre in UK and also sells their products on Amazon UK. What import taxes are you talking about?

The absolute last thing I want to ever put on my head is a Facebook/Zuckerberg/Luckey headset.

It’s really a shame Microsoft ever got involved in VR now that they are pulling the rug out from under some good headsets and better ones that will never be.

When the big guns came to play it trashed startups trying to bring headsets to market. Now those are gone or stunted and Microsoft just washes their hands and walks away leaving us with very few alternatives for now.

Thanks, Microsoft.

I disagree. We now have plenty of newer, smaller players like Pimax, Varjo, Pico, Bigscreen, Somnium etc. None of them require Microsoft WMR.

The only major headset getting hurt by the WMR deprecation is the HP Reverb and it’s not even clear whether HP’s decision to withdraw from the VR market put the final nail in the WMR coffin or vice versa.

While those are headset makers or headsets, not all are for sale yet, or are very expensive, or have other issues. And Sony is opening up their headset for PC VR.

Microsoft waded into PC VR like a sumo wrestler in a kiddie pool. They really disrupted the market and at least before they decided to jump back out, their splash had to discourage other headsets and other companies. There’s just no way many would risk development of competing headsets without something to really hang a hat on to get a return in the face of a Microsoft “standard” that was being supported by a lot of companies also making headsets.

It will take time before we see an ecosystem like there was before with headsets being introduced somewhat regularly with improvements in resolution, clarity, comfort, features, and field of view.

None of those issues are due to WMR. WMR is nothing but an interface standard, which is the least complex issue when developing a VR headset.

I completely disagree. WMR is just an interface and has no impact on resolution, clarity, comfort, FOV etc. We’ve also been getting a constant stream of new headsets for years now and none of it has to do with the existence or non-existence of the WMR interface:

  • Valve Index
  • Oculus/Meta Rift, Rift S, Quest, Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro
  • Pimax 4K, 5K+, 8K,
  • HTC Vive, Vive Cosmos, Vive Pro 2, Vive Focus, XR Elite
  • Varjo VR-1, VR-2, VR-3, Aero
  • Pico 3, Pico 4
    etc. etc.

I never said it did. What I said was Microsoft, in my opinion, by wading into VR with WMR, likely stifled a number of company’s efforts in VR.

How much extra justification would you require before greenlighting a big investment in everything it takes to produce a high-tech product like a set of VR goggles after HP, Acer, Asus, Samsung, etc all announced their goggles? Luckily the end of WMR has been obvious for a while as everybody bailed out and the air is clear again.

Yes those are other headsets. Some you listed predate WMR. Others have poor field of view, etc. There has been some progress but the VR goggles industry took a hit.

You are free to have your own opinion.
