Questions on the F/A-18

Couple of questions on the Hornet.

  1. Is the HUD meant to be zoomed in? Seems a little odd that so much is cut off.

  1. Are the flaps meant to be set to ‘Auto’, repeatedly return to ‘Auto’ even if i change it & do the flaps only have one stage? Either redacted or full. Probably a stupid question as i imagine it’s designed for carrier work.

As for your HUD question, it is operating as intended (as in real life). HUD’s are projected at infinity on the glass lens, and are collimated. That means it is only designed to be viewed from a very specific “sweet spot”. Basically, if you see the edges being clipped as you show in your screen shot, your viewpoint is way too far aft (away) from the HUD. You need to move your viewpoint up closer.

I found the f18 sluggish and non responsive to certain commands ..Sad that the canopy doesnt open

If I understand your Flaps question correctly, you want to set the flaps in AUTO for 99% of flight. They will automatically adjust based on load/AOA for best performance of the jet. For T/O and Landing you want to set it to Half/Full so they stay where you put them, and are not moving around which would mess up your glide path.

In all fairness…the Super Hornet IS quite a dog, quite sluggish compared to the legacy Hornet. With any exterior stores, it’s difficult to even break Mach 1 in real life in FULL afterburner. It does high AOA maneuvers well, but it is NOT a speed demon by any means.

Very much agree about the canopy! Sad.

Appreciate your help. Are your electrical systems (ATC) working correctly? Had a few flights with the plane, everything working how it should. The first flight i had ATC then the next two the ATC panel says electrical systems are turned off when they are turned on…
