Real world scenery - really?

I’ve flown all over and it pretty much all looks nice, just a few spots here and there where there’s something that needs fixing. For those I made pix and filed support tickets on Zendesk.

The whole area where I live is absolutely spot on. The local 670m airfield, every landmark, every house, every power pole, every tree line is placed correctly… in insignificant southern Germany.. ^^ It’s the best scenery I have ever seen.

However, some major cities are lacking terribly and I must admit, I would have expected a handcrafted city of Sydney.

anyway: have a look here:

Well I will concede I have not flown over those areas. Nor would I know what they should look like to begin with since I have never been there. I do fly a lot of rural areas in the United States though, not over photogrammetry areas like large cities and stuff.

So you are saying over these areas they are not using satalite images? Or they are of such poor quality they look horrible and not accurate? I would assume there are some areas of the world where there is either no satalite images or they are not very good. Especially if you are talking about China, North Korea and places like that. Or areas that are so remote they just don’t get photographed very often or in great detail. I would think Sri Lanka would look pretty decent though.

I guess I will have to venture off my normal areas and explore the world a bit more. I will check out those areas and see what I think I guess. But again, I honestly have no idea what they should look like to begin with. I guess I could compare it with google maps or something.

But lest be honest and realistic here for a minute. Pretty much the whole planet is mapped. The Whole freaking planet. Did we expect it all to be perfect? I certainly didn’t.

It’s very easy to be happy with your lot when the areas you fly look really good, but otherwise its not so nice for others.

Shh, focus on the bits that are good and stop ruining my fun /s

I’ve been far more impressed with the scenery than the default aircraft. Visually they look great, system wise they don’t really measure up to the default aircraft in XPlane. Also a bit disappointed with the preference for glass cockpits over steam gauges particularly when the glass cockpits leave a lot to be desired.

Yes - this is it: you’ve put your finger on the problem - ‘the worm in the fruit’. It’s an impossible task - a task which, realistically, would require a dedicated staff of hundreds years to even attempt to make good. And it would, even then, still require continual revision and improvement.

The conclusion is that this virtual world, as impressive as it is, will always be flawed. It can never be rendered perfect, so we will all have to accept, just as the developer, that compromises will inevitably have to arrived at. Errors will always be present and this world won’t really ever be ‘finished’.

I’ve described the vision for MSFS 2020’s virtual world as ‘a fool’s errand’. By any reasonable apprehension - given the constraints of time, money and technology itself - it can never actually be fully-realised.

I am not talking about doorbells a lot of farm houses where I live have become 4 storey office blocks or possibly hotels. There are bridges that disappear into the river. Things like water and roads are in the correct place but it doesn’t look at all like my home area.

I ran out of fuel nearing Seatle and actually put the bird down in high grass around a nearby lake…the grass was all there, green, long leaves, beautiful and quite realistic!

I agree with you OP. Its time to reduce focusing in detailing the western mega cities. True they are huge, modern and beautiful but they have to focus on other countries cities as well.

In FSX, my country and cities look like a slump and not to mentioned their airport! I couldn’t believe its the same in this sim.

Give us that same satisfaction when we fly over Tokyo, Paris, New York etc.

Hey a storm chaser.. woot!

And funny enough the developers that did Washington even included White House interior with Donald Trump.

Yeah, actually they said they will. They said “whoever else will be sitting in the office will be modeled”

LOL! That made me chuckle…
