@DigitalJonx after watching Boresights video I’m still a bit unsure on some of the included features.
Does the com and transponder work for use in Vatsim?
Is there or will there be
in future an in panel gps (similar to what FI does)?
Is there a functioning autopilot or does it work with standard key binds?
Edit: had it confirmed via YouTube comment that a compromise has been made for vatsim so (1) is thankfully a yes
For me I’m not looking for a 100% WW2 rendition of the aircraft, modern reenactment is more my thing.
As long as the appropriate aircraft/systems cfg files stuff is in place to work with the PMS50 that would be acceptable as a compromise.
At just $20 the price can’t be knocked but I’d still be torn that I’d paid for a lot I didn’t need (some say features others say gimmicks). Are the FI ones worth the extra cost, that remains to be seen.
Weapons don’t interest me but the addition of the drop tanks for a long range cruiser is definitely a plus and why I’d like the GPS/Autopilot (people have to go the loo and can’t pause on vatsim).
None of this is intended to be negative, the team look to have done a fine job. It’s just a matter of what’s important to the individual.
Early on in development our team chose to authentically represent the F4F-4 in it’s WW2 Era configuration. This was important to us, especially considering there are no flying F4F-4’s today. We don’t have any plans for a modern GPS panel in the cockpit. That said, the files will of course be unencrypted and any experienced modder will have the ability to look into core files to give them those modern features. GPS Units are something we aren’t planning on for release, but our team will be able to look into that based on feedback. That said, PMS-50 can be opened as an in-game panel and should work wonderfully with this project (outside of auto-pilot).
As mentioned, we’ve seen the Warbird market and have determined to change the era for this release. We went for full authenticity and hopefully the lower-price point reflects the loss of some modern systems that we felt weren’t perfectly fit for this project.
Vatsim will work with our Comm/Transponder Units and there is no autopilot in the cockpit, however that can also be opened up to all modders in the future.
Thanks, appreciate the honest and detailed response. Every developer sets their own goals for their project so can’t knock you for that.
I’ve been wanting to buy a payware GotFriends aircraft for a while after loving many of your freeware aircraft….for that reason alone it’s almost certainly going to end up in the hanger.
I’m confident I can get the PMS50 to work if I get the aircraft direct from you assuming it doesn’t work out of the box that is
Jonx was kind enough to send me a preview copy so I’ve done a little aerobatics display at Duxford
In at the deep end, but the thing inspires confidence from the moment you are rolling!! Not bad for first time out in her, hehe.
Of course, I didn’t think I needed another warbird in the hangar. But of course I was wrong! This is very different to the other beasts. A lot more friendly, as in it doesn’t want to immediately kill you, less finicky on the ground and a more subtle roll rate. Feels great - slower to turn but very precise and weighty feel to it. Very satisfying and graceful flow.
The sounds are top notch epicness, as is the texturing and the reflections on the wings really photoreal with slight imperfections and ripples in the plating. Looks so spot on! Generally oozing with charm and quality all round as you would and should expect from Got Friends!
I’ll have to be organising an event with this soon - probably not a race… maybe a carrier landings thing? Although a race would be fun too!
Yes definitely - it’s docile
The Hellcat, whilst pretty stable, can bite you pretty bad!
I nearly lost this when I was near stall speed (when I had to take an evasive course over Concorde lol), but recovery was easier than in any other Warbird I think. Yeah probably as it’s less powerful so doesn’t have as much p-factor torque fighting you at those moments.
It’d be cool if it had “keypress-level” autopilot. That is, nothing unrealistic on the panel, but just acknowledge the wings-level/altitude hold keypresses so we can multitask…
You may want to give it a try anyway. Many of the aircraft whilst they don’t have a visible autopilot the keybinds still work.
Assuming it works though, if your on PC the PMS50 mod is definately worth it. I’ve been able to add GPS/autopilot to at least 6 aircraft now so the $75 lifetime price isn’t that bad for the premium version.
I’ll feedback once I get my hands on the wildcat to confirm if it works.
Out of interest, how did you compile the flight model? There can’t be too many people with F4F-4 experience, there’s only one early varient of the Wildcat, NX12260 flying.
Ah, nice! Docile is good in my book. A sort of single- engine B-17 - temperamentally, at least. Count me in! I mean, I was already in. But now it’s official…
I like pure and raw wwII warbirds. I hope all the modern gimmicks can be left off if not desired?
And how accurat are the ballistics of the droppable stuff? Thanks for making this. Day one purchase.
On some of the preview videos one can see that it is possible to feather the propeller. That is not correct. On the F4F-4 one can only adjust the propeller between 21.2° and 45°.
In its day it was quite the dogfighter. After going 1vs1 with Mr Boresight i’m really looking forward to trying the F4F’s combat prowess for myself. Fingers crossed xbox release soon
AvAngel review video reveals more titbits and also uses the appropriate carrier
I can’t believe GotFriends went to the trouble of Modelling the innards that we would never see, pointless from a flying perspective but wow. Just as long as it doesn’t hit the FPS
