[RELEASED] F4F-4 Wildcat | Got Friends

You really put Asobo’s Mustang to the same line as FlyingIron products? Other one is Aeroplane Heaven in usual quality. The third one is?

Been excited for this since the original announcement, day 1 snag for me!

My first thought was ", I don’t understand the question?"

A lot of people put a lot of concern over a couple of bucks…, kind of… if you have to ask, why even bother? And I don’t mean that in a mean way, but I know since it’s text, that’s how it will come across. But really, if you’re satisfied with the Hellcat and concerned about money, I’d just say no.

For me, when they announced it a couple of years ago, there was never any question whether I’d get it. Combination of both the quality of the author and the plane. I grew up reading “Fighter Pilots of WWII” from my local library over and over from the age of 8. Love me some Wildcat.

Wow, that’s a steady hand on that stick while cranking up that gear

In the Atlantic escort carriers played a vital role late in the war and were attached to convoys and so-called Hunter-Killer-Groups to combat Uboats. The Wildcats would do aerial recon and try to sink the Uboats while they were surfaced or snorkeling. Then they directed the destroyers towards the spot the Uboat submerged so they could encircle it and locate it with sonar. Uboats only could do 8kts submerged while the fastest destroyers could do over 30kts and escaping three or four destroyers pinging you was close to impossible.

Will the Wildcat have some kind of thing for keeping track of flight time? Such as FI does with their aircraft in the tablet.

To a lot of people the difference won’t matter. To a lot of others the difference is drastic. Nevertheless, for those who don’t care or don’t know different, they are available. There’s about 10 different P51’s in the racing pack. They’re mostly all slightly different I think tho I haven’t tested them all. Meaning they all have different cockpit instruments/setups.

I also think the Atlantic camo schemes for the Avengers and Wildcats is really attractive.

I’m sure many are already familiar with these videos, but I thought I would post them in-case anyone who hasn’t would be interested. Kermit Weeks used to do a series of checkout videos of warbirds and vintage aircraft in his collection, and the Wildcat is one that he covered. This being the General Motors-produced FM-2 variant, but virtually identical in operation.

With the recent accident involving G-KINL, there are currently 15 Wildcats flying in the world - one F4F-3 and the rest are FM-2s (unfortunately no F4F-4s).

The first video provides a great look at what it takes to unfold the wings.

Part 3 (revised with commentary added over the in-flight footage):

Oh, please, I do have one ask (OK, two after my last one):

Please put a operable gunsight in it. I don’t think it would break the “weapons” proscription and, to me, a fighter without a gunsight is somehow…unfinished.

Good call! I like the option of a gunsight or GPS, can operate as an original or as a restored warbird

@JohnnyT5000 I don’t know how many times I’ve watched Kermit’s Wildcat videos. I’m glad you linked them here. I really hope he will do Kermie Cam videos with both his A-26 and Boeing 100 when they are finished/ he flies them.

To give just one more answer to the question why we need a Wildcat…watch this video of Greg Shelton doing aerobatics with his Wildcat. The performance is quite impressive, I’ve never seen a loop on top of another loop in any other warbird:

To be fair, this is also a General Motors build FM-2 with a 1500 hp 9-cylinder Wright R-1820 rather than a F4F-4 with its 1200 hp 14-cylinder Pratt & Whitney R-1830, but the F4F was still a well performing aircraft in its time and played an incredibly important role in the early years of the pacific war.

I for one can’t wait to get my hands on the Wildcat and am glad that Got Friends is the developer behind it. I’ve got no doubt they will do it justice. I hope we’ll see further warbirds released by them in-between all the unusual aircraft we all love Got Friends for…maybe a Zero

I wish you would bring this bird to DCS, to fly alongside the upcoming Corsair there, but I imagine your friends at flying iron might have horror stories to convince you not to!

This looks awesome
