[Released] Flight Replicas P-40N

I’m almost positive you’re wrong on that one. Microsoft put a huge amount of effort into modeling each of the different P-51’s for the Reno racing module. Each plane has different flight characteristics, different cockpits, and I’m nearly postive different sounds for each.

I was hoping you could tell by the aircraft.cfg file, but then I remembered it’s encrypted, too, so it’s impossible to tell. But I would have every reason to believe, since the two planes share the same engine, that’s exactly what they did. Why would they do any differently since it’s right there?

And, hence, why you think it’s “weak” sounding… It ain’t a Merlin…

I could be wrong, but a quick review of the relevant Q&A when the Reno module was released will shed light on the subject.

Ah ok, well I’d be happy to be wrong. If that’s the case though, we could all be comparing different sounds.

And by “weak” I don’t mean the engine sounds physically weaker. I mean it sounds compressed so the nuance and dynamic range of the audio is squashed into something that is softer on the ear, but sounds weaker imo. But again, if they are all different audio then I may not be comparing the same thing as you and others.

EDIT: Having just listened to the P40B, P40F, and P40N from the relevant 3rd party devs (using YouTube), to my ear the P40N sounds the most tame (imo because it’s more compressed).

Unfortunately, that’s not the case. The P-51A Mrs Virginia uses the same sounds set as the P-51D Mustang.

Flight Replica’s know this is wrong as well as they commented as such but are happy because, to them, the sounds are “almost identical”. That’s not a view that I share. I don’t think the stock Asobo sound set for the P-51D is bad, I just don’t think it suits the P-40N as I do think there is a difference between the two.

Y’all are definitely working hard to find to find things to be annoyed about.

P-40 cockpit audio:

P-51D cockpit audio:

These are both from Kermit Weeks, of Fantasy of Flight fame, so the recording technique is the same for his Kermie Cam videos. The difference in interior sound is pretty darn subtle.

P-51D and P-40N external sound:

Be annoyed that there’s no non-marketplace release so that we can hang something from that rack under the plane, or so we wouldn’t have had to wait forever for the airshow verison to be fixed. Or be annoyed at the Marketplace policies about weapons.

But listening to the real planes, I betcha if this had taken the P-51D sounds and renamed them “P-40-Allison-Audio” nobody would have ever known the difference.* It’s one of those checklist complaints that’s easy to make but really does not detract from the experience.

  • Yes, IP violation, wouldn’t happen, that’s not my point.

Firstly the recording of a cockpit cam isn’t going to capture the full sound of aircraft, it isn’t really the point. I do think there’s a difference in the engine tone, is it massive? No. Am I annoyed about it? No. But do I think it helps make this package good value for money? No, I don’t.

Just for context, I knew straight away the P-51A by Asobo was using Merlin engine recordings because it just don’t sound as it should.

Agree. And it’s not even the fact it’s from the same engine or not. It’s the quality of the recording. At the $42.95 price point I would expect the developer to have sourced their own quality recordings. That said, I love warbirds, so should this ever go on decent discount I’ll probably pick it up.

Yeah, as a Marketplace product, I’d love to get it, but that’s no go for me.

It’s $12.49 in the current Marketplace sale.

Oh true! How did I miss that! Thanks.

I’d held off myself because I own the P-40B and P-40F already. Couldn’t justify $27, but $12.49 was a no-brainer. No regrets, especially once MS finally gets the update out that fixes the airshow version. Hopefully tomorrow!

If you pick it up on PC, be sure to grab some of the 13 (so far!) superb repaints that @pby5a has uploaded for this.

Thanks, yeah I have the P-40F, but one cannot have too many warbirds lol. Would be great if Aeroplane Heaven’s P51 got a steep discount at some point too. I feel that one is bit pricey too.

New update that fixes the flight model of the airshow variant is out and I can confirm both versions now fly great. Grab it now while it’s super-cheap!

Well, ■■■■. The airshow model’s fixed, but the camera is three feet behind the seat in the WW2 model.

Since it’s a Marketplace plane (ugh), we’ll of course have to wait for an official fix. But in the meantime, you can fix it by renaming cameras.cfg to cameras.cfg.back in the Curtiss_P40N folder, and copying the cameras.cfg (make sure you copy, and don’t move) file from Curtiss_P40N_airshow into Curtiss_P40N.

Reload the sim and the cameras will be fine in the WW2 version.

Despite what I said, you and the sale convinced me to get it anyway.

It is possible to create a new package for the camera.cfg, and lots of other stuff, even though it’s a Marketplace plane… Check out the difference in the eyepoint between the two models

Yeah, he’s updating it due to some localization updates as well.

Swapping over the camera config (and the eyepoint and some spacing were all that showed up in the diff I did) from the airshow model fixes things fine. No need to mess with any other files.

I don’t have this one myself, I opted for iniBuilds P40, but is there no way you can just change the head position? I can do that with almost any plane I want with a couple of key strokes.

Does anyone have this aircraft on Xbox? The standard version when taken off from grass turns the sim to 10-15 FPS, it’s unplayable and takes the game a long while to get back to normal. I read that someone said about toning the glass reflections down helped on PC but that’s not a option on Xbox. The Airshow varient has no such problems at all? It’s very strange.

I have all three on Xbox X don’t notice anything

If you take off the non-airshow varient from a grass runway, it’s fine however if you take off from grass that isn’t designated by the sim as a runway, it becomes unplayable.

I did email Flight Replicas and they were really quick at replying, they were able to replicate the problem and have fixed it. It should be fixed in the next update.
