AvAngel - AvAngel Navion B Review 8/27/23

Hey, thanks for the replies.

No worries, I have a similar sense of humor. Mostly, I was just bringing things up for discussion, not necessarily asking questions as such.

Interesting to hear about the livery. I’m surprised that the Feds are OK with black on black N numbers. Cool paint job, being flat then.

I’d love to hear your SME’s response about the low speed handling. I came up the military side of aviation, so most of my hours are in larger turboprops and jets and I have only occasionally passed through GA land.

And, as I said, I have never flown the Navion. So, more specialized performance and/or vintage aircraft (which may not obey the modern “niceness” laws of design) may be able to do things that are…unusual.

I would not have thought it was possible to tip an in balance aircraft up on its tail at landing speeds; discounting horsing the yoke back, which is not what I am speaking of here.

If the current performance allows tipping the aircraft CG so far aft that it tail sits…with moderate and progressive backstick force, then perhaps that’s what I’m experiencing.

If that is what the actual aircraft does, please don’t change it on my account. It just felt odd to find the stability so neutral.

If it’s correct, then it’s correct.

Anyone know what airport was used in the AvAngel review? She said she would put a link in the video description, but danged if I can find it. She just said it was a recent release on Orbx.

Looks like this double pack…
W16, First Air was in the video. It says at the start with the weather report on the intro camera.

Thanks! And you’re def. right about the location. I looked it up on Google Maps and you can see the track she flew past on approach. ~$8 US each per field for the pair looks to be a bargain. I’ll be picking them up when I get home.

It’s been a while, but the Navion I flew, with two adults in the front, and 50% fuel, would lift the Nosewheel with up elevator…. but not quite so early as I recall.

I did get the package yesterday and am overall reasonably happy with it.
But I can not seem to get the tablet to work. Not before Battery on, not after. Or with the Avionics.
But I only had a few minutes to play with it.

And that bug splatter on the windshield….that is actually annoying I must say. I would not start an airplane with that on the window.

Thanks for that real world experience! I was just trying it out with the HUD up and, at default to the runway settings, my nose pops at about 25-30kts.

I think the impression of the effect is exaggerated with a standing start. The aircraft accelerates quickly and the nose will pitch within about 3 seconds of brake release for me.

A more normal(?) rolling go would probably feel less abrupt.

How about the landing? I found that, with only a little backstick, I could keep the nosewheel off the ground down to about 13kts, though 15-18 might be more typical. Just tying other nosewheel stock planes (152, Nosewheel XCub) most would begin to fall despite backstick at about 20 kts.

This is probably not much an issue if you just lower your nose after touchdown. I just noticed it as I kept expecting the elevator authority to peter out as I slowed letting me know when it was time to put the nose down.

Of course some planes are more nose heavy than others, so this could also be just how the Navion flies.

Appreciate the input. :slightly_smiling_face:

I too like the package overall. I think it hand flies very enjoyably and much better than many.

Oh, did you click on the power “Home Screen” button at the bottom of the ipad? It turns it on and cycles between pages.

Hope this explains the tablet function, you can then select the Clean Navion button on the bottom right-

LOL I did find the button…but…after clicking on that button I would have expected the screen do go from flat grey to something like what you have there.
I did not try click and drag or scroll wheel and I did not that little hint mentioned on Page 6 of the manual. I did look there

That part I will play with tonight certainly, but I do recall that at about the same configuration mentioned earlier, keeping the nose up in the roll out was relatively easy…especially compared to our Saratoga.
Especially if you touched down with just a smidge power and then simply bringing more and more back pressure until she was all done.

The Saratoga, unless you had a rear trending WB would tend to rotate more on touch down…so you had to really get the timing just right or it would touch down with the nose wheel then come back up and then run out of elevator and then drop again…looked and felt uncool.

We had a B25 at L67 at that time and the two brothers flying that would usually “air brake” on the mains almost all the way to the FBO turn off
So that was a bit of a thing for us.

I hate that… :person_facepalming:

LOL. I knew a guy (who looked a lot like me) who held the nose of a A321 off for a little too long.

Let me tell ya. That fall is longer than it looks!

LOL … well I can imagine that one. And unless you did that in the company SIM that is just a tad bit more embarrasing :upside_down_face:

I have only flown a A320 in a LH Level-D Sim once and I managed not to break it on landing. That was good enough for me. Though I did not get any immediate job offers.

Well the Navion Tablet now does work for me…with a little help

And the Bug Splatter is not on the One-Piece Windschield. So that also works for me.
The Elevator Effectiveness at slow speed does need a bit of tweaking. She could be held up…but for me this is too easy and at too slow a speed. Even with the throttle fully closed.

In the Base texture folder, open NAVION_CLEAN_ALBD.PNG.DDS and delete the spatter graphics.

I have located the splatter and normal map dds files and was headed in that direction. Thanks.

If you have ever actually flown an aircraft you have also had one of those landings that you would rather forget, despite having fulfilled the minimum requirement of being back on terra firma and the airplane being immediately ready for another flight.
And if you have ever landed at a small GA airport where the touchdown zone is directly in view of the airport cafe you also know that every landing that you are not really happy with will get you a few rounds of mostly good natured rubbing.
That is all I meant by that….so :man_facepalming:all you want.

My face palm was because I’ve been there…

One of my touch and goes on my long cross-country, that’s one I’m glad it was a far away airport and I didn’t have to face anyone watching the runway at that moment is one in particular I remember…

Maybe you should change your name to FlyingsCool_LandingsNotSoMuch :stuck_out_tongue:

LOL…

Actually, the vast majority of my landings are extremely smooth, one of my favorite parts of flying is the landing, not because I want to be on the ground, but, because a good landing is soooooo satisfying… but… nobody’s perfect.

The Navion B will be released this Thursday in the Official Marketplace for both PC and Xbox versions. Version 1.0.1 will follow ASAP.

V1.0.1 Fixes

Adjusted Flaps Flight Model
Adjusted Elevator Flight model
Fixed Glass Reflections
Fixed animation on PAX Lights
Fixed animation on ADF Swap Freq
Fixed CDI Animation and Texture
Fixed Glide Slope On/Off animation
Fixed Texture Green/Gold Livery
New Cockpit/Canopy Interior textures/mesh
Fixed Multiplayer mesh
Fixed Visor Texture
Added Frost Texture
New Mixture ratio to power efficiency
New Mixture Lever to Mixture Ratio
Fixed Hydraulic levers so now the gear and flaps are controlled by the hydraulics

WIP - There are two other functions for the gear to be a failure. The knob below the gear lever is an unlock feature and to get the gear to unlock you have to have negative G’s otherwise it is humanly impossible to unlock the gear irl. The pump near the center of the bottom of the panel is used to pump the gear back up only. No time frame of when that will be working, could be tomorrow and I’ll include it in 1.0.1 or whenever I figure out how to include that failure feature. Those are the last two issues that I know of that need fixed. I will update that here when available. I also have made a full Paint Kit which can be found on my Discord for anyone who is interested. Thanks for the hard work. Think it will do well in the Marketplace!
