[Released] Virtavia B-36H Peacemaker

Have you tried the autopilot? Just need it to hold course as I’ll want it for long flights lol.

Here’s a good first look from AV Angel:

Altitude hold and Heading hold to navigate

They can record from YouTube videos of the real thing flying.

Don’t know but I guess they could if the quality is OK. Not seen any comments that say the engine sounds are bad or not realistic though.Virtavia say its a Wwise sound package - don’t know what this means, but I guess it must be good. Lol. Overall, I agree with Avangel that its good value for money.

No, they cannot just extract YT recordings.

But there are examples still flying

I realize I neglected to follow-up here that I did buy it and I’m quite happy with it. I’d like to share my thoughts for anyone on the fence:

I think it’s a good value for the price point. The exterior model is a touch low in poly’s at places, but you only notice if you zoom in to extreme levels. For normal use, and anytime you’re looking at the plane as a whole (or mostly since it’s so dang big lol) you don’t notice this. The textures are adequate. The cockpit is pretty nice and comfy. It makes for quite an office view. It feels fairly well modelled although it could probably use a slightly darker color, but that’s personal preference based on other comments I’ve read.

The systems are decent, although there is a major issue with startup. From cold and dark, I could not get engines 4-6 and all 4 jets to fire up, either following the checklist or troubleshooting to the best of my ability. Ctrl+E works fine. I emailed Virtavia and Phil promptly replied that the issue is with the sim - that it can’t properly handle the fuel valves for 8 engines (the 4 jet engines are simulated as pairs of 2 so you have 6 prop and 2 jet “packs”). I’m not sure this is really the case because I don’t remember running into this issue with the Hughes H-4 Hercules and it’s 8 engines, but to be fair it has been quite some time since I last flew it, and it’s possible I used Ctrl+E to get going quickly due to the water start (I otherwise prefer cold and dark). The solution, according the Virtavia, is to bind a key for Toggle All Fuel Valves. Unfotunately, this messes up the magnetos for engine 1 so you also have to bind Magneto 1 Start (I think it’s called). If you do this before running through the checklist, everything should start up fine - I haven’t had a chance to try it myself.

Ground handling is heavy but responsive. The flight model is nice and heavy in a satisfying way. I did a training flight to 40k and the plane climbed comfortably and handled smoothly. There are no contrails, but there are faint smoke effects for the jet engines. The autopilot immediately wanted to nose dive when initiated, but once you set the pitch dial (which doesn’t have an indicator as far as I can tell) it does the job though it does kind of have bad “aim” for the heading. Defensive guns deploy with the spoiler key (and add a fair amount of drag - maybe too much?) and the bomb bay works with the tail hook key. Landing is smooth and heavy much as you would expect for that weight and wing area.

Edit: I forgot to mention the sounds are nice and heavy and plenty loud. It’s hard to say exactly what they sounded like in real life as was discussed above, but they are convincing and certainly play the part.

In summary, if you have any interest in this category or timespan of aircraft then I can definitely recommend this. The price can’t be beat, and we likely won’t see anything else on the market. Here’s a video showing what key binds to setup. Again, I haven’t had the chance to confirm this for myself but it sounds right according to how Phil explained it:

Its disappointing that a couple months later its still not updated. Im the one who uploaded the tutorial video, told Phil how to fix the engine start issue, and made the flightsimto engine fix addon, all over a month ago. Ive really been trying to make the best out of this plane but having done all that with no developer experience, Virtavia not being able to do the same is disheartening to say the least. The plane is okay, but not good enough for $17.

How do you actually map the control axis for engines 5-10?

I’m seeing some odd results with engines 1-4 mapped to throttle 1-4 axis too. Throttle 1 doesn’t seem to work, throttle 2 seems to move 1 and 3…

What’s the recommended mapping for this plane?

why Virtavia released this plane ! Why why !!

Stewart was amazing… still flying missions through Vietnam… What a guy in so many ways.

Presumably they assumed it would make them money

The jets are grouped by “pod”, and IIRC jets 1+2 are throttle 1, props 1-6 are throttles 2-7, and jets 3+4 are throttle 8. I use a single throttle so it’s all in one for me.

That doesn’t make much sense to me…

There are only throttle axis for 1-4 in the settings. That’s where I’m getting confused.

Since engines 5-8 are the most buggy parts of the plane, it doesnt surprise me that they would have issues with throttle mapping. They seem to act like fake engines, reading wrong temps and not starting like the others. Although, it could just be a MSFS thing.

Also, finally noticed that Virtavia updated it. Its a shame only two major bugs were fixed after a whole three months, but if he keeps up this pace, in 5 years we might have a finished product… yay?

Edit: Looks like Virtavia has moved on to making a F7U, so the B-36 is probably getting abandoned with all its major bugs. I certainly feel scammed at this point.

here there are four B-36 flights you might like & re-hash:
