Reliable inflight ATIS or METAR

I was wondering whether there is an existing way or a plugin that allows you to get the current simulated weather (especially wind and QNH) for an airport. Background is that at the moment ATIS via radio seems to be quiet buggy or not begin available at all. On the other hand METAR from external services often is not matching the simulated live weather.

This is a known issue. The team at Asobo says they are working on it. Navigraph does add automated weather to multiple airports that do not currently have it. It does come with a subscription, but also corrects, waypoints, navaids, magnetic variance, and most aviation data updated on a regular basis (No current sim does this).

But even Navigraph’s new weather stations have the same bugs as the default ATIS, and report completely different conditions to those that actually exist. It’s a MSFS bug.

Hello,
I moved this out of Wishlist and into General Discussion & Feedback. Thank you.

Don’t think you quite understood what he’s asking. I believe he’s looking for a way to pull something like a simulated METAR from the in-game weather.

I’m not aware of anything besides the environment display within Little Navmap. It will give you information like the temp and wind at your altitude, along with the pressure. That’s been the only reliable way to figure out what actually happens in-game when using live weather.

Oh really does it? I am using navigraph and also using its beta db for MSFS 2020 but I never seen weather information in the navigraph charts app. I ll check for that again, thank you!

Why? The wish for a feature to get the sim to expose weather data is something for the wishlist for sure.
I also miss any way to get reliable data since currently there is NO way to know the conditions in sim. ATIS is telling wrong data and real world METAR sometimes doesn’t match.
Without any ability to get the data prior final approach, I often end up blindly guessing and hoping. Also it makes it impossible to better compare the state of the sim to the real world METARs.

Exactly. I can pretty much live with weather not being 100 percent accurate to the real one but it would be cool to know (reliably) what’s the weather like before arriving at an airport

From the pull request on FBW’s Github I can see that they’re working on implementing ACARS/ATSU to the A320.

Just checked the PRs and that looks really promising

There were two PRs, one was pulling the METAR from a website, the other from some Webserver that seems to be fed from the MSFS internal weather.
We’ll see if they really managed to extract the data and in how far it really matches the conditions. I also wonder what will happen with their approach if you select a weather preset since the Storm preset generates variable rain and wind conditions (its not raining globally).

If there’s some way to get it, maybe finally LNM could fetch it as well so we have the data available when flying other aircraft as well.

Still, I think this thread needa to be in the Wishlist section since we need a well documented API and/or ingame display of the weather data at any given location in the sim.

In my opinion they should stick with MSFS’ weather data because otherwise it would probably be useless. Probably an option to switch between the two would be a good idea.

I didn’t mean direct weather information in the charts. Navigraph updates comms for multiple airports many of which are currently missing AWOS or ASOS, automated weather frequencies. If you tune to those frequencies (you can find the frequencies for specific airports in the charts) you can hear the weather information for that airport.

Hi there,

The reason I moved this is because a) The topic is a question: "I was wondering whether there is an existing way or a plugin that allows you to get the current simulated weather (especially wind and QNH) for an airport. " And b) If I had kept it in Wishlist, I would have merged it into an existing topic. There are several wishlist items already that cover this, like these two:

There are actually more than this but I may have to merge them, too.

Does anyone know if the latest v0.4.1 mod ATSU menu works with latest FS patch? I can’t seem to get the MCDU menu to show up.

I don’t think that menu is in 0.4.1.

This is pretty frustrating. You pick up ATIS in sim, expecting some headwind, instead you get a tailwind.

I assume you meant you were expecting a headwind, because you were looking at an actual METAR, or some other real world data. I have been tracking this since Alpha testing, and there has been significant improvement in this area. Similarly, winds aloft data has improved to the point that flight planning using real world data works most of the time. I still encounter occasional anomalies, like the one you mention, but the trend has been positive.

Yes
looking at either real world METAR or tuning to ATIS in-game gives different reading than what is actually encountered in-game. Most times I pick a runway based on METAR or ATIS, and I would say >60% of the time they’ve been wrong. I would expect some headwind component and would have a tailwind or similar.

15 months later and this simple problem still isnt fixed. I cannot get any METAR window to pop up. The ATC is only uncontrolled airfields even for major airports. No taxi instructions coming down. No menu selection for Metar in the Comm window. But I am still seeing everyone making videos getting full weather reports. So I dont know if I am holding my mouth wrong or what.
