ROG STRIX 4090 and 25FPS

Hi.

This week I got my Asus ROG STRIX 4090 card and was very disappointed by MSFS performance.

I have already tested RDR2, GTA5, Cyberpunk 2077 and FarCry 6. Everything is fine and FPS corresponds to what I’ve seen on YouTube.

The only problem is with MSFS. I get FPS lower than on my previous RTX 3080 (35-40 FPS) which is twice as weak as 4090. Now I get around 30FPS

Very strange behavior of both CPU and GPU. Both show very low usage, around 15-20%

One could think of CPU bottlenecking my GPU, but Ryzen 3950X is still very decent CPU and MSFS says that “Limited by GPU”

Graphics are maxed out, DLSS is set to Quality.

Any suggestions, what might be the problem? Again, other games such as Cyberpunk or Far Cry 6 shows that GPU works on full (99% usage and 520W of power)

I think you’ll need a more powerful cpu to have any chance driving that beast! :joy: 5800x3d isn’t even powerful enough to fully push it.

It looks like Vsync is causing the CPU to hit a wall around 30FPS due to the Terrain Level of Detail being set to 325, then the “limit” will fluctuate between MainThread and GPU as they both keep scaling up and down. Try seeing if you get the same results with Vsync off or turning down the Terrain Level of Detail as that hits the CPU much harder than it hits the GPU.

Switching off Vsync hand no impact.
Decreasing “terrain level of detail” to 200 erned me 3-4 extra FPS.
Still, GPU usage is only 15% and “Limited by GPU”

Firstly you need to turn hags on in windows, then you will get the frame insertion option, set it to dla, give that a shot.

That would be an indication that something is setting a frame rate limit on the MSFS application, if it wasn’t V-Sync it could be a 3rd party application such as Geforce Experience.

Surely he should see better performance though without relying on frame doubling?

Strange enough. I checked my “hardware accelerated gpu scheduling” settings and its “ON”
Just in case I checked registry settings and its definitly ON ( HwSchMode 2)
But in MSFS I cant see “NVIDIA DLSS super resolution”, only “NVIDIA DLSS”
Game and drivers are uptodate.
But still even without DLSS3 perfomance must be way better

What power supply are you running?

Corsair AX1200i

Nice do you get good results on benchmark testing compared to your old GPU?

Well, I didnt make lots of test with benchmarks, but new card is way faster than my 3080.
In RDR2 maxed out, previously, in some heavy locations such as night city I got 40fps. Now its solid 60 everywhere. Cyberpank maxed out with raytracing is unplayble with 3080 (20-30fps). With 4090 all maxed out, inlcuding raytracing its solid 60fps (DLSS quality).
At one moment in Far Cry 6 I got 600.8W usage of GPU alone

if your gpu is performing as expected in all other games/apps apart from msfs then it suggests there’s something not quite right with msfs rather than your gpu imo.

i’ve found DLSS maxxes out my cpu whereas high TAA maxxes out my gpu, try high TAA. i bet you’ve already restarted the sim several times. i’ve had the odd time when msfs didn’t utilize my gpu for no apparent reason but it cured itself between restarts. i am using an older cpu too (i7 7700K) and my 4090 is nearly always at 100% with my settings.

Are you running sull beta?

4k and Supersampling at 8x8… do you understand what you are doing??

Set it to off and be happy.

 just realised those screencaps are of your PC settings, not VR ones lol! So OP, are you using VR? I assumed you were, or else why post this in the VR section of these forums? If not then I would suggest you are cpu limited. I’ve tested my own pc and at 4k flat screen i am cpu limited, i get 20% less fps than those with high end cpu’s like 5800X3D’s etc.

Setting Supersampling to OFF gives me exactly same FPS. I understand what I am doing with my 24Gb GDDR6X

I never said that I use VR. The thing is that “VR” and “Hardware & Perfomance” are combined in this forum, but I might be wrong

I think there’s a Performance forum in the Community Support part of the forum where users will generally be using 2D rather than VR. This forum is for VR users.
