Rolling Cache won't update file location or size in settings and Rolling Cache file does not exist anywhere

I don’t understand what’s going on here, but when I try to update my rolling cache file it never saves it’s settings and always defaults to the C drive at 0Gb when i re-open the settings menu. To make it more confusing, the rolling cache file does not exist anywhere I look in my file system.

I think this may be the source of my blurry ground textures and potentially the blurry ground textures of many others. It seems like I’m streaming data all the time, it doesn’t seem like anything I do in the sim actually gets cached..

I have limited space remaining on my C drive about (~12 GB remaining) and I don’t know if that’s also a cause of the problem

Anybody know how to get this to work, do I just have to reinstall?

I’m assuming this is a bug with the steam version maybe? Others have reported being able to up the rolling cache.

I see the same as you, no changes to size or location stick and no rolling cache file appears in the directory either.

Annoyingly though there used to be a large bug report on the forum and it’s mysteriously disappeared. The mods keep linking to that broken report and closing any new ones which is not particularly helpful.

I’m possibly not the best person to answer this but I’ll give it a go.
Firstly the default cache size that it tries to create is 16GB this is obviously too large for your 12GB available. You could try to make it smaller say 8GB but I have no idea if this would work either.
Ideally you need to create the cache on another drive. This can be done quite easily by creating a folder on the other drive say something like “FScache” and then putting that path into the rolling cache path instead of the default. You should then be able to create a cache file to a size that whatever you have space for.
There is a problem in that the new drive that you are going to use for cacheing will have to have a decent read speed. An old mechanical drive will not do. It would have to be either an SSD or preferably an NVMe drive.

If you have Steam, Rolling Cache is under the main MSFS 2024 directory (under Roaming/MS 2024) and it’s a .ccc file. I believe it’s called RollingCache.ccc .If you delete that, you will be set back to 16GM in the Sim and the Sim will create it again. I would also delete the files in the “cache” folder under the Sim’s main directory.

Yeah that’s the problem, the .ccc file is not there.

So I’ve tried to set the Rolling Cache to another drive (an NVMe) because that’s exactly what I want. The weird thing is that it looks like it works in the settings, the path updates and the size sticks, but then when I click “Save & Exit” and reopen it again, it’s defaulted back to 0GB and the roaming/…2024 directory again

That’s weird. Mine is set up on a different drive also NVMe and it created it no problem. It is 128GB so it took a good few seconds maybe half a minute to create it and told me whilst it was doing it.
Sorry but like I said I’m probably not the best person to help.
Hope you get it sorted..

Thanks, I just read in another thread that you have to have atleast 16GB free on the C drive for it to initialize properly, so I’m trying to clear up some space so I can get it to initialize and then I’ll move it where I want.

I haven’t even got that “moving” progress screen that you are talking about, so something is definitely wrong.

It worked:

  • The C drive must have at least 16GB of free space when you start the sim or the ROLLINGCACHE.ccc file will not be generated and there will be no way to create it on another drive, or create it at a smaller size.

Now that I’ve cleared the space off, the file was generated on the start of the sim, and I was able to use the settings menu to change the location of the Rolling Cache. I had to manually delete the ROLLINCCACHE.ccc file that was in AppData/Roaming after that, because it didn’t delete itself and was still hogging the C drive space. After that I was able to update the size to 128GB as others have suggested. Now hopefully I’ll have some performance improvements.

Message to the Devs:

  • There should really be some sort of warning or dialog box that pops up if the ROLLINGCACHE.ccc file fails to be created because there was not enough space on the C drive. It would be nice to then select another drive/folder location for the ROLLINGCACHE file.

This is not an obvious problem, I’ve been playing since release and had no idea my Rolling Cache was not working at all.

Edit: if anyone has issues after clearing off enough space, try resetting the “Online” settings to default. This solved it for me when I ran into problems again.

Thank you for looking into this, now to try and clear out 4-5 gigs of space on c drive.

Really disappointed this is even a thing.

Yeah, I am disappointed too because this is probably why a lot of people are getting blocky load in textures all the time. I was getting blurry textures on runways, ground textures, plane instruments, exteriors, etc. It usually took about 30 seconds to a minutes for the blurry textures to finally go away.

Now I’m not seeing the blurry textures anymore when loading in on the runway, or switching between interior and exterior views. Seems like Rolling Cache is doing it’s job.

nope, i have 500gb free on my C: drive and the rollingcache.ccc STILL won’t create. i STILL can’t change the location of the rolling cache folder

Sorry, it immediately solved the issue for me so I thought that was for sure the fix.

I wish there was a way to @ the devs for things like this. Rolling cache not working is a major issue and I’m surprised there is no verification when it is not building the file. It seems to me that when the cache wasn’t working I had constant blurry textures and now it seems to be resolved.

Potentially there are many people that have a broken rolling cache which means they are hitting the servers way more often than necessary.

Same here. Don’t know what’s going on but everytime I go to settings it’s at 0.0 and path to appdata/roaming. When I try to change the size, I know it should be at least 16 but even at 100 doesn’t work and I get invalid number, when I try to change the path I get invalid path…
Is there a file where the path and size is stored?

for me it was a system issue. i had to go through the effort of renaming my user folder to the name msfs was trying to create the rolling cache folder in, which was different for some reason

If you have an issue and want assistance from Asobo or Microsoft you need to open a ticket with them.
Go to: Flightsimulator.zendesk.com

My issue is solved so it wouldn’t make sense for me to open a ticket. The point is that the application itself should check for these problems and give the user a path to resolve them, rather than not notify the user something is wrong (i.e no rolling cache file exists).

It would help other users not run into the same problem I did, I imagine it’s not uncommon to be running out of space on your C drive if you have an older SSD like me.

How will the devs know of your suggestion if you do not create a ticket?

Help desk support is not an outlet to make suggestions to the developers. That’s what these forums are for.

On that note though, I will create a bug report about the exact scenario because it’s been confirmed by others.

I’ve managed to fix it by reseting to defaults. It was able to recreate the file with 0 size. Restarted the sim and changed the size and it worked ok.
