I’m fine with my current PC configuration so far. Build in 2021. I enjoy everyday MSFS: i7-10700kf, RTX 3080, 3440x1440, 32 Gb and plenty of NVME disk space.
Usage: My personal taste are to lock fps at 30 fps and I exclusively fly on GA aircraft with some EFIS displays, VFR flight + Tobii… when I’m not on the Scenery Editor
There’s a lot of different approaches and feedback on this interesting thread. And in all, the performance are based on a mixed of criteria mostly CPU, GPU, screen resolution and usage.
My technical curiosity can afford a budget allocation because I’m teased by the DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation capabilities of RTX 4000 series. I would love to increase quality settings as I’m currently between High and Ultimate. 4070 are around 650€, here in France and the gap to a 3080 is awfull (1100€)
Anyone has experience a similar upgrade and want to share feedback?
I have done a similar upgrade, upgrading from a 3080 to a 4080, I have a i9 10900K and 32GB of RAM, I also run at 3440x1440.
I have everything running very smoothly on a mix of Ultra and High settings like your self. Personally I have not gained much benefit in terms of turning more of the settings up to Ultra, as the bottle neck is the CPU and the single thread.
The main benefit is I can now obviously use Frame Regeneration and my GPU temps are now significantly lower, which I think has an overall benefit on my system as whole. With my 3080 it was constantly running at temps in excess of 80 normally around 84 or 85, with the 4080 the temps rarely exceed 60. So generally the heat being produced is lowered and all the case fans etc are not having to work so hard. I used to Cap my Frame Rate to 60, when I had the 3080 in the Nvida panel but now using DLSS 3.0 I have removed that Cap and flying GA normally get around 86 FPS or above dependent on where I am flying. The FPS shown in the dev mode would normally be around 50 - 60 odd again depending on what aircraft and where I am in the world. I have always strived for smoothness over FPS with my settings, hence still using a mix of Ultra and High.
For me I think I may wait now until MSFS 2024 arrives and see if they have made any gains on multi-threading and then decide if it’s going to be worth sorting the CPU out, as obviously for me that is going to require a new motherboard and I think the sockets for the Intel 14/15 Gen chips is changing, so I will wait a while now., I think.
There’s a lot of discussion on this based on if you have Store or Steam versions and also a tool for those who don’t want to manage it manually: DLSS v3.1.1 released! - #11 by HarryVoyager
