RTX 3090, Ryzen 9 5900x, 32GB of RAM and FPS at Big Airports below 24 FPS. Help me!

I have upgraded my CPU thanks to the advice I received in this forum. I now have a Ryzen 9 5900x and RTX 3090 however, the framerate at big airports are still below 30 but above 20 FPS.

I am using a 65 inch screen and 4k resolution at 4096X2160, The RAM is G-Skill 32GB (2X 16GB DDR4 3000)
Just landed at KDFW in the A320, only 21 FPS :frowning:

Can someone please tell me what is wrong with my PC configuration?

What sort of RAM do you have? Ryzen really likes fast RAM. Make sure you have the XMP profile enabled in your BIOS.

Also, check that the ‘glass panels refresh rate’ in the settings is at ‘medium’.

edit: also assume you mean Ryzen 9 5900X, not Ryzen 3?

What is your screen resolution? Do you have everything set to Ultra?

On some airliners I find that setting glass cockpit to “low” makes a huge difference on a Ryzen 3700X (slightly older generation).

I can concur that loading the XMP profile for your RAM in the BIOS/UEFI screen will likely give you a noticeable CPU boost and may raise fps by a few – my DDR4 3200 RAM was incorrectly running at 2166 instead of 3200 until I did that, and I got a boost once done.

But expect like from 25 to 30 at most, not a huge increase from that alone.

try turning vertical sync to OFF

Yes everything to Ultra, 2048 on terrain shadows . Panels refresh rate is set to ‘Low’

That is about correct FPS given the plane you’re flying, resolution you are pushing, and airport you are landing at. All assuming you are on Ultra. I have a top spec intel PC and get around 20 FPS in the FBW a320 at big airports
I play on Ultra with high refresh glass panels

I’ve never seen a significant fps change between vsync on and off when the fps cap is set to 60.

(When the fps cap is set to 30, vsync on because unplayable.)

Yes everything to Ultra

There’s your problem; turn it back to high-end and see how that looks, then turn on individual things you like that don’t slow it down.

After seeing your edits:

  • 3000 MHz for the RAM is on the slow side (Ryzen 5000 series work loads better with 3600. Make sure the XMP profile is enabled in the BIOS, otherwise it will run a lot slower
  • 4K resolution will make any system sweat. Lower Render Scaling down to 80%. Will give you a lot more performance, and most likely you won’t be able to see the difference.

Ok I am a real life pilot and I am flying the FBW A320. I hoped to get realistic performance after spending my hard earned money on a home sim for practice. Now I am quite disappointed.

I am a real life pilot too and find the sim very playable and enjoyable at 20-30 FPS. That’s coming from someone who usually usually needs high FPS to enjoy games.

You really need to tune the settings to match your hardware, and VERY few computers can run this simulator at very high resolution with ultra settings at a reasonable framerate. Set your expectations reasonably, and tune it for your preferences on performance and appearance, and you’ll have a good time.

OK so shall I buy the RAM then? Do you think the performance will increase?

Before you buy ANYTHING else tune your existing hardware correctly. This will save you a lot of money and heartache.

again; first check if your current RAM is actually running at 3000MHz by checking it in your BIOS (you haven’t answered that question I think).

Upgrading to faster RAM will likely give you a few more frames (and yes, I mean a few, not tens), but don’t expect wonders.

Tune your settings a bit to see if you can get an enjoyable experience first (render scaling to 80%, maybe some other settings to high instead of ultra)

OK Let me figure out how to check it.

But you get a smooth flight at that 21 FPS?
I believe that there is too much focus on FPS these days. This isnt FSX. I think we should focus on whether you get a nice smooth flight and great definition. So see if you are getting a nice smooth flight. If you do, then everything is working fine. There is absolutely no point in chasing high FPS numbers if it actually doesnt make a difference. I think that 21 FPS for that landing and plane is about normal I would say. I have a similar high spec machine and recognise these numbers.

Restart the pc, and start mashing the ‘DEL’ key when it starts booting, should take you straight into the BIOS.

I fully agree with this, as long as it’s not stuttering and smooth,

This is a simulator not a FPS where every frame counts
