One of the most important is this: small text legibility when doing IFR.
I love instrument flying with the A320NX, and using the MCDU with a small screen or low resolution is unbearable for me (if it works for you, that´s great).
When you use a large 40-43" 4K display you have a very large representation area and really sharp text. You need to move less your point of view, you don´t need to zoom as often, and flying, interacting with your aicraft systems and having all the information you need becomes much more natural, much less intrusive, and inmersion improves amazingly.
Sure, you can do that at 1080 changing your point of view an zooming, and if that works for you, it´s fine, but for me it is not acceptable, it completely kills the experience. I got really frustrated after doing it hundreds of times every single flight, after one week it was XXXX.
That´s why I bought a RTX 3080. Sure, I don´t get 60 fps, and I couldn´t care less. I can use my 4K display at fast enough speed (for me, thats 25-40 fps) and enjoy a tack sharp A320NX cockpit, and that´s what I wanted.
Trust me, I will not go back to 1080 - 2K ever again. For me, 4K is probably the feature that most has improved my sim experience.
Nothing is wrong with your config, the sim is simply poorly optimized at the moment. The fact that we needed an update to just lower the refresh rate of glass displays in airliners so that FPS would be reasonable is indicative of that. Maybe when decent airliners come in 2 years (or whatever PMDGs timeline was), it will be better then
That’s how it is in a program this complex I learn to live with it and lower my settings although my specs are way slower than yours. You get a smoother experience flying GA.
Why can’t users focus on reporting performance issues to aboso? Why are you still trying to use self-deception to barely fly at 20-30FPS?
The best way is that thousands of users focus on FPS performance issues. Look at GTA, look at TSW, look at European trucks, look at xp and P3D, I really don’t understand why MSFS2020 can win the “International Award”
performance! performance! performance!
This kind of performance, sorry for your expensive investment. Now that you have invested, please accept your fate.
You seriously think users have not been reporting performance issues to Asoob? Folks have been performing issues since day one .Not something I’d expect to be fixed overnight!
Dude, the one thing over the last decade that changed my sim experience the most by far is TrackIR. For IFR in a big iron cockpit, it will change your life. I honestly would quit flight simming before I’d quit TrackIR. It’s basically VR but you can still see your charts, your hardware, any tablet you have set up. I can’t believe you’d go to all the trouble and expense that you have and still zoom around with a mouse or keyboard.
Yeah, performance threads have been all over the forums since day one and you can bet Asobo are well aware of those comments. Meanwhile experienced flight simmers just do the hard yards (and bucks if they can afford to) to set their system up to their taste for the game as it currently is and go fly.
I’ve had a blast since day one and for the most part it’s just getting better. Flying a Caravan in the New Guinea highlands, being amazed at the FBW A320 Neo mod (MCDU still does my head in, but I’m getting there) playing silly buggers in the Aermacchi MB-399 jet trainer from Indiafoxtecho, you name it.
Ok Here are my latest screenshots at KLAX, Los Angeles Int. Clearly the RTX 3090 is not even being used to more than 50%. What seems to be the issue here ?
I have the same CPU and GPU going into a new rig. I didn’t get that combo entirely for Flight Simulator. I’ll make use of all those cores and vram, but mainly because that’s what I could get from a reputable retailer right now. I’m looking forward to the challenge of tweaking for performance actually, rather than turning it on and being miffed that it’s not amazing out of the box. It’s going to be part of the fun of the build, especially since Flight Simulator itself is such a work in progress. I’ll report back here if I make any applicable discoveries or have significantly different performance.
A big chunk of the FS community still thinks that the human eye cannot see above 30 FPS so it does not surprise me that the performance is found to be acceptable by so many.
FS2020 seems very CPU bound at the moment. I have an RTX 3070 and mainly get stutters due to being “limited by mainthread”, despite running a 9700k @ 4.8 ghz
Plane Type A320 Fly by Wire
Resolution 4k 4086 X 2160
GPU: RTX 3090
CPU : Ryzen 9 5900x
RAM: 32GB GSkillz DDR4 3000
As you can see I have upgraded from the old intel but results really aren’t that great which can be made out from the aforementioned screenshots at KLAX
All of us struggle at KLAX, as it’s probably the worst performance you’ll get, along with NY and Tokyo, at least from my limited experience flying there. Since you are on 4K compared to my 1440p monitor that’s an even bigger ask, although to be fair the nVidia cards do better at 4K than the 6000 series Radeons, especially the RTX 3090 compared to my standard (non OC) Gigabyte RX 6800 XT.
I do have fast 3200 MHz ram, with manually adjusted tight timings and I have tweaked the performance of my GPU using AMD software that raises power usage, and limits the GPU clock to a 2000MHz minimum and a 2450 Max. That helps stabilize any dips in clock rate with Radeon cards, though I have slightly undervolted it, as the stock setting is needlessly high. GPU memory is set to fast timings.
Maybe something in your nVidia control panel settings is not right.
At KLAX in the FBW A320 Neo at such spots I too get hammered, but mostly around the mid to high 30fps near the ground on approach, mostly all ultra, apart from annoying freezes and drops to mid 20fps when scenery is loading (I have roaming cache off and a 50Mbs fiber connection…I may up that to my local available max of 100Mbs on my ISP).
All in all though, with a roughly similar set up to you I find my overall experience in MSFS to be a huge improvement over my previous CPU/GPU combo of a Ryzen 3600X and an Asus nVidia 1660ti OC, where Ultra settings at best gave me high 20fps in sparsely populated cities and low to mid 40s on high settings at 1440p.
For people who struggle with the “Limited by MainThread” problem/stutters, I made a tweak which was a thing in fsx and p3d. It’s the Affinity Mask tweak and it helped with the smoothness for me. I made a small document so you can try it out yourself if you want to. I got a 9900K. Document
Two different screenshots at Los Angeles, this time in the latest dev version of the FBW A320 Neo to show my framerates. The second shot both screens with most of Adrenalin software settings (notice I still had flaps deployed, lol). I also had max GPU frequency lowered to 2400MHz on this preset…
