So I’ve bought all the parts for a new gaming pc apart from Graphics card. CPU is a Ryzen 7800 x3d with 32 gb corsair 6000 cl30 ram. I dont do the VR thing. My screen resolution is 2k (1440p). Theres about 150 euro difference with the rtx being the more expensive. But, DLSS has better upscaling than FSR. I also like the control panel better. But I’m not sure about performance. Ive heard in a few videos the 7900 xtx outperforms in some metrics. Not sure though if those metrics are MSFS applicable.
Basically… What would go for?
If I were buying right now, I’d be getting the 7900XTX, and that would be for using on a 4k monitor.
The cards trade blows in testing, but the 7900XTX generally edges out in rasterized performance. Plus you get a lot more VRAM. The 4080 would do better in ray tracing, but that doesn’t apply unless you have other games you want to utilize it on (none in MSFS). It would likely do better for VR, but doesn’t sound like you’re using that. It has DLSS, but you could probably get by with no upscaling on either card (I run my 6600XT at 1440p fine with no FSR upscaling). It has frame generation, but I think that’s almost useless on a slow paced game/sim like this.
In short, I wouldn’t go with Nvidia unless you have a specific need to use their cards. If you’re not sure, then you probably don’t have a real need for it.
Mooncat covers things well.
I’ll just echo that worrying about upscaling on a 2k monitor with either of those cards is not necessary. I’m running native 3440x1440 at primarily high settings on an RX 6800XT.
I thought you were going to say Radeon 7900xtx after what youd wrote . Wouldnt I be better off with better rasterization considering VR and upscaling on 2k machine arent an issue?
Frame generation really should be top of your priorities in picking a videocard for MSFS. I have a 4090, lock my framerate to 90 FPS, which is noticeably smoother than 60-80 FPS, especially with head tracking, Beyond 90 FPS it gets difficult to notice any improvement. But more importantly, when the CPU is getting hit at large airports with traffic, you can generally keep things at 75+ FPS. Without frame generation, even the 4090 would be unable to push more than 35-40 FPS in those situations, due to the CPU bottleneck. Rasterization performance doesn’t help whatsoever, because you are CPU limited. FYI I run at 3440x1440.
FFS. I should learn to read. You did say that. I read would not wouldnt. Sorry.
A 4090 is out of the question. Simply too expensive and as available as rocking horse sh*t at the moment. :-\
No worries, I understood what you meant anyway because I apparently misunderstood what you said as well. I guess two wrongs can make a right after all! Lol
On your advice I just ordered the 7900 xtx, If its crap its your fault ;-).
I’m extremely pleased with my RX 7900 XTX, which I run at 4K.
If that happens, I’ll save you the hassle of returning it and you can just send it to me.
Enjoy your card! Wonder when will MSFS get official fsr3 support fs2024?
I’ve been very pleased with my 7900 XTX as well, with a 4K flat monitor and TrackIR head tracking. Join the cool kids club!
Loving my 7900 XTX at 4k HDR10 on a 55" Qled TV and btw, you can get frame generation - see this link:
AMD Frame Gen preview driver
I’m also in the same boat. I ordered yesterday also a Ryzen 7800 x3d with 32 gb corsair 6000 cl30 ram and 4080. Hasn’t shipped yet. Still don’t know if I should swap it for the 7900 XTX. I’m a bit worried about the 16gb VRAM in MSFS. But do like FG and able to play games with raytracing. Hmm can’t seem to find the answer what to do. How is the card for you so far?
The card arrives on the 28th. A day or two for installing the basics and MSFS… Will let you know the 2nd or 3rd, *eek
You shouldn’t be worried about 16gb unless you’re going to be running heavy mods it’s going to obviously require more. Vanilla I don’t go over 11gb.
AMD current sponsored games “consoles” heavily uses vram with little RT implementation and laughable graphics. Not worth it imo.
Keep the 4080. It excels everyway over the 7900xtx especially with RT and FG. Don’t buy into the VRAM propaganda.
Just to keep this in perspective - just sitting on the runway at EGLL with my RX 7900 XTX using DX12 I’m using over 19gig of VRAM. DX12 is the future of the sim as per MS/Asobo so more VRAM will definitely future proof you.
BTW, I had to take the pic below with my phone so not the best quality as the Adrenalin overlay showing stats is not visible with a screen grab.
He should be worried. I get over that with my 6800xt and some 3rd party airports easily, in DX12…
So anyone buying a new card today should me aiming at 20GB VRAM minimum…
Doesn’t change my opinion. I am never over 10-11gb. Last time I checked I am not running all sliders to the right! VRAM doesn’t work the same on the newest Nvidia cards incase you didn’t know.
@WingWarper1 DX12 here and I am sitting at 9.5gb of VRAM. Like I said I am not maxing out my settings. I am on 2D 1440p ultrawide and I am never ever out of VRAM.
If I am going to make full use of 20gb and run 4k full settings or VR I’d just get a 4090 at that point over a 7900xtx.
Why would you get a 7900xtx over a 4090? Cheaper doesn’t mean better and what does AMD do better atm besides more VRAM.
AMD still has worse upscaling quality and what’s the deal with FSR3? Not impressive!
