I can’t believe for one second that Asobo planned to release this when they did! I believe if it was up to them, it would still be in beta. I believe that Microsoft forced the decision, because ultimately they don’t care or have a passion for Flight like us - their passion lies in their pockets!
I just hope that they can pull off some magic in the next few months and reverse the damage.
There’s only one of two conclusions here…
Either way too much hype was created
Asobo were limited in terms of timescales and were therefore unable to listen and respond to all the Alpha tester’s cries and concerns.
This could have been so much more! What a wasted opportunity!
It was most likely rushed by the suits at MS. The timeline for the alpha/beta was still indicating an end of year release but things shifted around June and the timeline was scrapped.
It is a shame but hopefully the team can improve the sim via updates. I guess one positive is the FS community is stepping up and finding ways to improve the sim.
I promised myself I would not enter into this discussion point again for the millionth time, but I just can’t help myself. It is clear that it may have been rushed. But it is clearly arguable whether this was a good or bad thing. It is clear they are working hard on it and intend to do so for quite some time. It is out now, so lets bug-report them to death to help make this thing great. Cheers.
Considering that this is literally the flight simulator released in the most complete and polished state of the last two-three decades, there’s nothing “rushed” about this.
If you think this is rushed, you probably haven’t ever played any other non-combat flight simulator at launch (those tend to be more focused and less complex) or even close to launch.
The simple reality is that this kind of product is likely the most complex on the gaming market, and there won’t ever be one that is released without a long roadmap of improvements ahead, because doing so would require a development cycle length that is not commercially viable.
The sooner people realize this, the better.
PS: No “damage” has been done. You shouldn’t confuse your personal reception of this product with the general reception, which is very, very, very positive.
Absolutely was released before it was in an ideal state.
The fact it is not on the newest DX and is so poorly optimised is a big hint at that.
It is a good effort but should have been great. Hopefully MS pay for an expansion to this title and they can get improvements done as quickly as possible.
It doesn’t matter if there are bugs and missing features, they’ve made it clear they’re going to keep improving it for a long time, in it’s current state it’s mostly playable and personally I’d rather have access to it now with all the problems than wait for a more polished version that may be a year or more away.
I’m glad they launched it. There is nothing but upside here. Now we can all play it and enjoy it in the state it is currently in. Asobo have so much more feedback on the issues. Community can get stuck in starting to address some issues themselves. MS get some money in the door so can fund extra development (Asobo are already putting out job adverts).
Honestly, assuming you are correct, where is the downside of what they have done? The alternative approach is all bad. No game to play today, less feedback, less resources for development.
Compared to Super Mario where everybody uses the same Joystick to control the same superhero on the same levels… yes it was rushed, as they didn’t test all the possible combinations of Hardware, Airplane, Location, Controller, etc config.
Thank god they did release it, I love it!
The only thing which would make me even more satisfied is if the community released a terrain/scenery editor so I could add custom 3D objects. I know there are tutorials, but my limited time doesn’t permit me to study all those steps/tools; I’m a noob who could greatly leverage an all-in-one tool.
Game is back by a multi million dollar company, Game is using state of the art technology never before used in a Flight Sim. The Dev team has 100’s of people working and is hiring non stop more people to work, go look Asobo website if you need a job. The sim is 100% playable right now. The Sim is only going to get better from here not worse. The Sim was built not 100% for computers today but tomorrow. This Dev team is thinking about tomorrow not yesterday and so should we all.
I’m glad they released it. I was nearly wetting myself with the wait. Ok, it’s not perfect yet but still infinitely playable. Unless your PC randomly shuts down like mine does. (hardware issue).
My only gripe so far is the NOP tags on too many instruments.
While I understand that many of you are happy this game is already out and the majority seems to be satisfied with mere exterior view sight-seeing (check out the Niagara Falls yeah) there’s plenty of us who thought the game’s state and abilities would at least match those of earlier sims. But as of now that’s not the case and I do think we have every right to feel a bit down about that. I can’t even fly around my state and (radio-)navigate properly because the VFR map offers next to nothing and is so poorly designed. How can that be? It’s the worst thing since testicular torsion and doesn’t allow me to enjoy this sim at the moment, yeah apart from the messing about with a few sights and cities and stuff. The reason why this issue bugs me so bad is because I know it’s gonna be weeks or months until we have a useable VFR map that’s at least as good as the one XP11 offers, or (hopefully) even better. So in a way me and many others would rather have waited another 3 months for a far more refined product. So it’s about understanding both sides and I for one believe that many hardcore and oldschool simmers feel indeed very much let down at the moment by these companies and this release. Not a good start just for a few extra quid. Now a big part of the community’s stressed out and I reckon the guys at Asobo Studios are well annoyed as well, having to fix all the stuff now even quicker. But anyway, it’s out now so let’s make the most out of it. I just can’t be bothered having to download gigs and gigs (remember that many players have very poor internet bandwidth) of patches every other week but I reckon that’s what we’re going to have to deal with for the next half year. But whatever.
This game source code should be made open source. With how much modders already improved FPS and airplanes in the past 10 days, imagine where they could take it in a year with full access.
I totally agree. I wish people will just report whatever bugs they encounter instead of just writing useless posts that describe their feelings which does not benefit anyone. That’s way I’m spending less time reading the forum than before.
The team very clearly said that they are working hard on fixing the bugs. So, why we are still seeing such posts? I have no idea!! Maybe people just dont read.
Guys just stop posting similar things. Your points are well taken by the team. Move on into other subjects
I had the same feeling but when I read about the boxed version done by aerosoft, I changed my mind. The boxed copies were produced and stored early enough for a launch on the 18th. This is not something you can organize in few days, the lead times are not short. This means that a launch in August was already in the plan for some months. Probably since beginning of the year.
What I can imagine is that the covid impacted Asobo’s project and dragged the development efforts. The teams can work from home, yes, but the communication is not as effective, children are at home (no school), etc. The IT network was maybe not prepared to have All the staff working from home. I work for a French company and it was not easy for anyone in the last months.
So maybe they were counting with a big big effort from April until August, in order to finish and polish the sim.
Thanks @Shaheen89. I think it is because there are alot of new people coming on board and, as a Moderator told me once, people have to vent and that is part of the purpose of a forum. Cheers.
