Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7GHz, 64GB, RTX 5070Ti: PC set-up tips?

Micro Center is building this PC for me today. Finally taking the PC plunge after 2+ years of Series X. Thanks to all those who recommended any of these components across many threads and posts; thanks also in advance for any set-up tips!

Ryzen 7 9800X3D 4.7GHz
Zotac RTX 5070 Ti 16GB (the only/last one in the store)
2 x 32GB G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL30
MSI X670E MAG Tomahawk AM5 ATX motherboard
MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 850W Plus Gold P/S
SK Hynix Platinum P41 2TB NVMe M2 SSD

Will be migrating MSFS Marketplace version purchases when the time comes.

Are they installing an operaring system?

Nothing runs better than a fresh OS and a fresh install of all apps.

When you have that done make a system restore image so you can return to that if ever needed.

I installed a fresh debloated copy of Win11 when I built my system.
I’m convinced it’s helped my sim experience.
For one thing, it made it simple to create a local account.

For another…well, you can see how much garbage you can very easily prevent.

I only have MSFS 2020, 2024 and Firefox Web Browser on my rig. No other games.
I also turn off most of Windows Defender, as I only go to Flight Sim sites that I trust.
I have a laptop to handle all other apps, searches and downloads.
I have just purchased a 9800XD3 with a 4080 super.
Enjoy your new rig, I certainly am enjoying mine.

So far, only running 24 on the new PC. May add 2020 at some point, but focused on SU1 beta right now. Agree, all other computer chores run elsewhere! I’m all Apple ecosystem outside of flight simulation. Two more flights today, both GA, one in the G36 and the other in the C404. Seeing my home turf routes in 4k mixed high/ultra decimated any future possibility of buyers remorse!

I honestly don’t see why folks discuss DLSS so much, I hated it in both glass cockpit and steam gauge, reverting back to TAA each and every time I took a look at it, even without FG. OTOH, as much as I am thrilled with the new rig, I gotta say that for what is costs, a Series X properly set-up delivers 80% of what I am getting here for a fraction of what I paid to get that last 20% of satisfaction. That said, all the little things that get in the way flying my old Box are gone now.

And since probably very few will be reading this thread I’m going to toss out another gloat: with this purchase I have proved to myself what I have surmised, that the folks having the most fun in 24 are those with mid-high level PCs. While it makes sense, I now know it to be true for me with this PC!

I had been trying DLAA for the past couple weeks mainly because I didn’t like the jaggy contrails from the distant high-flying airliners. DLAA fixed that.

However, most everything else was worse. The airplane gauges were really annoying. DLAA didn’t make static numbers blurry like DLSS was purported to do, but the “delay” in rendering things like the speed tape, altitude, or any other text that was changing on the PFD or MFD really bothered me. It would smear the text out when it was changing. I finally went back to TAA today, and I’m going to leave any DLAA/DLSS/FG settings to other people.

Contrails? AFAIK contrails are bugged and don’t show up. I don’t see any contrails from AI traffic and have seen others reporting they don’t see them too. Even the FSLTL devs said in their Discord they are bugged and don’t show up. Are you seeing contrails from AI traffic?

A week and a weekend in, below are the settings I have landed on for both MSFS 2020 and 2024:

Q80 FreeSync set to ULTRA with NVIDIA G-SYNC on in the 5070 Ti.

HDR10 on in Windows, NVIDIA and in sim (driver 572.70 for the 5070)

PG off (for now, still undecided)

TAA on, FG off, DX12

V-sync ON, Frame Rate Limit 100% (Q80’s 60Hz)

Dynamic frame rate target 30FPS (in 2024 only)

TLOD 150

Off screen terrain pre-caching HIGH

Terrain vector data HIGH (2020)

Displacement mapping OFF (24)

Buildings HIGH

Trees, Grass, Bush MED/2020, HIGH/24

OLOD 150

Volumetric clouds HIGH

Texture resolution ULTRA

Texture synthesis ULTRA (2020)

Water waves LOW/2020, MED/24

Contact shadows HIGH

Ray traced shadows OFF (24)

Windshield effects MED

Ambience occlusion MED

Raymarched shadows OFF

Light shafts MED

Bloom OFF (2020)

Depth of Field HIGH

Motion blur HIGH

Glass cockpit refresh HIGH

Airport & air traffic HIGH (24)

Roads…Fauna HIGH (24)

These are looking and performing great coming from Xbox Series X. For a weekend I had more aggressive settings, more ULTRA, and that was causing problems arriving in the NY area, so dialed things back a bit; also in anticipation of the 24 MP opening and getting access to all my DLC from the Xbox days. Want some resources in reserve!

You can squeeze allot more out of that CPU, Memory and GPU.

Have you done any tweaking under the hood (BIOS)?

No doubt, but no have not gone into BIOS settings yet: It’s new, and I haven’t had a working gaming PC for more than a decade now, so starting low and going slow…

I did download the PMDG 738 over the weekend and it looks and performs amazing, as one would expect! Now on the way from handcrafted ORD to Dz’s EWR right now. I’m only adding one DLC per flight or two, as I am going to keep 2020 lean and mean for the things I can’t do in 24 yet. Once I see how performance is with easy to access settings and DLC (when 24 MP opens), then maybe drill down deeper into stuff to push the rig a little harder. For now, keeping power in reserve as long as I have smooth flights without glitches. Thanks for asking!

I just built mine last week,

MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI, AMD X870E ATX AM5
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer III 360 A-RGB Black AIO CPU Cooler
nVidia RTX 3090
G.SKILL Trident Z5 Neo RGB 64GB DDR5 6000MHz CL30
SAMSUNG 990 EVO 2TB M.2 NVMe 2.0
MSI MEG Ai1300P PCIE5, 80+ PLATINUM Full Modular 1300W
be quiet! SILENT BASE 802 Window BLACK

I benchmarked it after the build and Windows tweaking, then thanks to @TenPatrol I went through the BIOS and got everything tweaked.

Benchmarked again and night and day.

MSFS performance is stellar and stable.

I had MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WIFI – a very good motherboard and a great choice if you don’t need the X870E. If I hadn’t decided to give it to my son along with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D and 64GB of RAM, I would still be using the Tomahawk. Now, I have the X870E Carbon WIFI.
Since I had this motherboard, I can help you with BIOS settings.

Fun fact: @skypilotYTS has the exact same PC as me, but the differences are RAM – I’ve been using G.Skill 64GB CL26 for the past 5 days – and I have an RTX 4090.

Awesome! Might it make sense for me to get in there, see what is already set, then share that back? Any instructions on how to do so safely greatly appreciated, either here or by PM. Thanks a bunch!

P.S. I had been following your posts along with folks like BegottenPoet228 and and about a half dozen others to come up with a reasonable parts list, albeit short of a god level rig.

He has a different CPU which makes a huge difference – we have gaming-focused CPUs (9800X3D) that are less problematic, so not all of his recommendations might apply to your PC.

Exactly! I would recommend starting by doing that – checking what’s already set up and then sharing it back.

If you plug a USB flash drive into the PC before turning it on, you can enter the BIOS and take screenshots of the settings by pressing the F12 key. After that, you can share those screenshots with me in a private message.

However, I’d suggest checking if your BIOS is up to date first, as some settings might differ if it’s not updated.

Good idea, here is a Quick Look from the MSI software, BIOS v 1.G0…

@TenPatrol

Is it just me, or is that Memory kit for Intel XMP?

It doesn’t matter, as long as the RAM is on the motherboard/CPU QVL.

My G.Skill RAM kit is XMP, and in my AMD BIOS I use an XMP profile.
I don’t even see an EXPO profile listed.

It’s just a set of voltage and timings.

Ah okay,

That’s probably why you don’t see an EXPO profile listed. I have the AMD G.Skill kit and I don’t see XMP just EXPO.

Yep.

Another thing I learned a while ago is the difference between XMP-1 and XMP-2.

Some RAM supports XMP-2, which can use settings embedded on the RAM.
Some RAM only supports XMP-1, which gets all the timings from the motherboard.

People think this place makes their head spin.
Try spending some time over on overclock.net
