Ryzen 7950X on Default Mode How to Mildly Overclock?

Just moved up to 2024 on a computer used for computational/graphics reasons and am getting good FPS (60+) with a 3070ti card. But noticed in the DEV FPS window that I am CPB bound… this surprised me since I thought the GPU rather than the Ryzen was the weak component.

I looked at my Ryzen controls and saw what looked like only one or maybe two of 16 cores being used.

Now these are running at 4.6Ghz and I should be able to run stock at 5.6… and this is running in default mode not gamer mode.

I think I discovered I may have a lot of headroom with the CPU that is going unused…

Need a sanity check here!

PS This shows the DEV FPS Screen:

I have a 7950X3D and a 3090 Ti.
In my humble opinion, this CPU needs a couple of things done to extract its capabilities:

  1. Per core undervolting using Core Cycler to test, tweak, test, tweak, test, tweak etc. until you are seeing max boost on every core during the test phases.
  2. Process Lasso, assigning flightsimulator2024.exe to the Vcores only, and everything else to the non-Vcores. I followed these recommendations for the most part. Some surprising stuff in there, so at least give it a look.

Other tweaks do help, those two are the most important (dare I say mandatory?) with this CPU.

Windows Game Mode OFF
Ultimate Power Plan
Core Parking disabled using Bitsum Core Park app.
ISLC replacing a disabled HPET.
Of course RBAR enabled, but that’s almost a given these days.

Thanks so much. I have been into flight simulation for a long time but this particular computer was designed for another hobby (astrophotography) where we use the CUDA Cores for AI image processing (e.g. noise reduction) and I only belated realized it might be OK for MSFS 2024.

I’ll go down your recipes. Unfortunately I only have the 3070ti and 8GB of VRAM, but I see on the DEV FPS panel that I am CPU bound all the time.

With various tweeks and TLOD manipulations I am getting 80FPS… but I would like to maximize the detail…

Were you able to get a noticeable performance improvement?

Well spoke too soon, tried to get the software and my instance of Ryzen Master did not work with this error:

This is after uninstall, reinstall and chipset update… apparently this is driving a lot of people crazy… hope yours works… may have been a W11 update…

I found the solution and will post it here in case somebody runs into this.

Solution is uninstall; REBOOT; reinstall; REBOOT; then run… drivers have to unload and reload with reboots…

Now let me see if I can actually overclock this puppy…

Getting cold feet doing the overclocking as I think there are a few too many things that can go wrong. I wonder if is use the Ryzen Master Game Mode that is an advantage over the Default Mode?

I believe that a forum dedicated solely to Microsoft Flight Simulator might not be the best place to seek advice on overclocking. Since you’re using AMD hardware and software, it would likely be more beneficial to ask for assistance on the AMD forum.

We’ve allowed OC topics in the past, and since this member is relating it to MSFS, it’s fine.

Thanks for the considerations. I think this is very relevant to MSFS 2024 for the following reasons.

When I run in MSFS 2024 I have optimized the VRAM/TLOD settings with a few tricks primarily lower TLOD and Texture quality, and I get a very nice 60+ FPS, BUT I think I can increase the graphics quality.

The DEV FPS chart shows that I am CPU constrained and the Task Manager shows I am running not on all Cores at a total of 40%.

Ryzen Master shows that 2 of the Cores are favored, I guess the fastest, and they also show up on the Task Manager Performance Window.

I think if I understand the Ryzen Master Gamer Mode that will favor those individual Cores. Hence maybe this is a good compromise that will not fry my machine?

This computer is primarily used for astrophotography and the graphics card was there to provide CUDA Cores for AI. When it runs for that purpose all the CUDA Cores run as well as all the CPU Cores at 90%, not 40%.

Thus I am trying to determine the safest way to overclock and it may be this Gamer Mode from Ryzen Master. I think the Gamer Mode might favor the few cores that MSFS is using. Trying to do this manually is risky, IMHO.

I have an open case at ASUS discussing this and trying to get a formal opinion. When I get the news I will post it here since I think there might be a number of people in the same boat as I who would like to improve CPU performance safely.

Forget about overclocking.

You just need the sim to run on the 7950X3D Vcores at the default max boost as much as possible. These are the things that will help you achieve that:

  1. Per core undervolt.
  2. Process Lasso
  3. Disable Windows Game Mode
  4. Use the Ultimate Power Plan

There are more esoteric things, but those are the basics for this CPU.
