Saving cockpit view

Hoping someone cleverer than me has figured this out.

So in 2020 you could save your default cockpit view by CTRL-F10 which I believe was called something like “VFR PILOT VIEW SAVE”.
I have a button on my Boeing Yoke set to reset cockpit view so it was great, I could set my view exactly where I wanted it. I could pan around and move around the cockpit and with 1 button press be right back in my perfect saved position.

In 2024 I have not found anything that works to save your desired default cockpit view position. I’ve tried using the VFR and IFR PILOT VIEW SAVE and no dice. As soon as I press my view reset it goes back to the original default view.

my exact issue as well. they have similar named keybinding but they obviously don’t work the same. very frustrating

Annoying as I use custom views heaps in the planes I pilot in MSFS 2020 and nothing seems to be for saving and recalling custom views in MSFS 2024 makes me disappointed for now-a vital feature.

Hoping for an explanation about the lack of custom view saving/recalling from Jorg, Seb or Martial in the next dev Q+A.

I key bind Ctrl F11 to VFR PILOT VIEW SAVE. Move the cockpit camera where I like and press Ctrl F11. Seems to work for me but I think we all might still be having issues with bandwidth and some setting not saving.

what button do you press to recall your saved vfr pilot view?

You need to map the views first.

I like numpad numbers, so “load custom view 1”is set to to “numpad1”

Then you need to map “save custom view 1” to an appropriate mapping, I have “ctrl+1”

Adjust your view to your liking then press “ctrl+1”

That saves it to “load custom view 1”

All this in “camera” and “cockpit”

Sure there is a better way but….

the 1-9 custom views, that’s a different topic. we’re talking about the main VFR Pilot View, the one facing forward and that is supposed load when resetting the main view

Can’t you use ”reset view” in the cockpit view commands? That brings me to default view

you’d think so! but sometimes that takes me out of the plane, sometimes it takes me to the cockpit, but what it definitely doesn’t do is take me back to my saved pilot view position like it does in MSFS2020

That sounds like it is lagging maybe since you get different results

I take it that nobody has been able to modify the cockpit view and save it successfully without having to resort to saving a custom camera view?

It should be the VFR Pilot View Save one, that works for me. I set a custom view and it loads into that as default now, and if I move the camera around and then hit shift+space it resets to my custom view.

Have you set your reset button on the yoke to the VFR Pilot View Reset option by any chance? That one will reset the VFR Pilot View to default, wiping your custom setting. That’s the only thing I can think of as to why it’s not working for you.

i’m using “view reset” or something like that. and it WORKS when I first load into a plane. however i’ve noticed that most planes hitting view rest moves the camera into the roof or floor. it’s not a consistent bug

I’ve not run into that yet myself, every time I reset view using the default key it resets to my custom VFR Pilot view (which is shift+space sry, not ctrl+space, have edited original post)

Well strangely enough after your post I headed into FS24 and tried using the SHIFT-SPACE command rather than my button mapping, and it worked. The view reset to exactly where I saved my VFR view.
I then remapped the reset view to my button and all was well. Went right back to my saved view.
Awesome I thought, somehow its all working now.
Then I changed to another aircraft and the camera was in the floor. Then another aircraft the view was in front of the aircraft and so on.

It seems from reading other posts that when you save any kind of custom view it overwrites all the other default views until you restart the sim. Even setting a custom camera did not work.

It appears that the view/camera system is simply pretty broken at the moment.

exactly. it feels like its gaslighting you as at first it works, and then it doesn’t. took a while to figure out what was happening with the new load breaking things. not sure how this slipped past beta testers

OK I’ve figured this out finally.

VFR PILOT VIEW SAVE does work, but it seems to be complicated…

I found where the camera view files are located. On the MS Store version its here:
C:\Users\XXXXX\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Limitless_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\SimObjects\Airplanes
In there should be a list of your FS24 airplanes. To get to the camera.cfg select the aircraft for example the Asobo 787 and navigate to the following folder:
asobo_b787\presets\asobo\b787_10\config

This is where the cameras.CFG will be saved

What my testing found was as follows:
1: You can save the VFR PILOT VIEW SAVE once per MSFS session. Once you do one save the camera views on your other aircraft will be messed up.
The only fix for this is to shut down the sim and restart and all the other aircraft views will be back to normal

2: I found that once I saved the VFR PILOT VIEW SAVE if I pressed my RESET COCKPIT VIEW button it would sometimes wipe the saved view and dump me back to the original view.
I verified this by saving a VFR view and checking the cameras.CFG. The values were saved in there. Then I pressed the reset button and the cfg was emptied, the saved view lost.
This did not happen every time, so it is likely a bug.

3: The fix for this is once you save your view. Exit to the main menu, do not try to reset the view.

4: Once the view is saved into the cfg and the sim restarted, doing a reset of the cokpit view works perfectly and the view is not deleted

5: You only have to save the view once per type, it can be copied over to other variants. For example once you save a view in the A330-200 you can copy the cfg into the other A330-200 folders. Similarly for the A330-300, once you save say the 300 GE, you can copy the cfg to the RR, the P2F, VIP etc

6: Some aircraft I could copy over the cfg from MSFS2020 and it worked fine. The A310 worked, but then some others like the 787-10 did not. Views from 3rd party aircraft like the Fenix and the FBW A380 copied over from 2020 perfectly

So it’s all very buggy, but it can be made to work, it just requires a lot of sim restarts unfortunately.
Again once you save the view once all your other camera views will be screwed up. The only fix for this is to shut the sim down.

I hope this is helpful for anyone else in the same boat.

very helpful. glad you 100% confirmed it’s proper Asobo bugs and not something we’re doing wrong. this issue was the sort of straw that broke the camels back for me regarding msfs2024 where it is no longer worth it to try and play. i’ve kept msfs2020 installed and will remain with it for the time being until asobo can get their act together and fix all of these myriad bugs. god speed

Why isn’t this in the bugs section ? The devs need to see this.

I had, am having the exact same experience as you. It’s completely maddening. I thought it was working, then load a new plane and be stuck in cargo or the engine. I even found Quick Look left and right reversed at times.

It is the insane number of inconsistencies that make trouble shooting futile.

Can’t wait for it to get sorted. It is quite good when playing nice.
