Sepia mask & light bloom at night still not fixed. Unrealistic ground effects still present. Unrealistic glow at night

I can only assume that they probably started FS2024 based on an earlier build. I assume the SU5 build since the lighting issues are presented with that update. I’ve heard a lot of people say that SU5 had really good performance if I remember correctly. So it wouldn’t be strange to see a lot of bugs from FS2020 starting from SU5, or whatever build they based FS2024, from that have been solved reappearing all of a sudden if that’s the case.

If you think about it, FS2024 was already in development while FS2020 was receiving regular updates.

But that’s only my assumption based on the evidence we have here.

As a developer myself, I would probably do the same thing. Heck, I’ve done the same thing. Forking an old version of an app and modifying it.

Again, I never had any performance problems whatsoever with the Tech Alpha night lighting back in late 2019 during the Alpha’s, midend computer, gtx 1080 gpu (non-ti) and later 2080 super… And now more than 5 years later, we have 5090 cards available, and still dumbed down graphics.
So I highly doubt the performance reason, given how well the superior looking Tech Alpha ran on several generations older GPU’s…

But again, given the complete lack of communication regarding this downgrade, your guess is as good as mine. :man_shrugging:

It’s incredible in general, not even just this issue, that the sim looks worse now that it did at the release of 2020, and it performs worse.

And we have significantly better hardware, frame gen etc.

It’s mind boggling how it’s been slowly broken over the years.

There is no other explanation for it then some very old 2020 build used. Could be even the one just before or after the console build. There are just too many problems in 2024 that are the exactly the same as years ago. I know for a fact that some bugs where from around update 5 of MSFS2020.

Hello everyone, I don’t know if I am the only one having this issue but night lighting looks so terrible in msfs 2024, especially on higher altitudes. Some areas look like they emit light, and it looks visually awful. Is it a general issue? And is there any way to fix it? Thanks.

I would suggest skimming through the 165 posts in this thread prior to yours - you’ll see that it’s an issue globally and is pending a fix from Asobo.

Edit: I see this was a merge from its own topic rather than (originally) an addition to this existing one. Apologies.

Apparently, SU3 won’t be offering any fix for this issue. I hope this will be prioritized by developers on the next update. Has anyone heard anything regarding this from developers that i missed? The topic was started in December…

In the latest development update, you can see this topic’s current status: ”Planned – SU4”

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• I agree - the night lighting is totally off in the new sim. There seems to be some threads saying this is fixed - it is not

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:
• Massively large night lights generally and particularly regarding runway lights

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

Is there anyone on Su3 Beta?

Heared that they supposedly improved the Sepia Mask a bit lately.
Can someone confirm this?

I’m on SU3 Beta and there’s no improvement, I don’t know where you heard it, but this is planned for SU4.

No changes to it in SU3. But as mentioned they supposedly have a night lighting update in SU4, but they’ll most likely just remove the sepia like they did in 2020, won’t hold my breath for an amazing update.

6-7 years in production and this is what they endup with. It’s hilarious and sad at the same time. Maybe it’s time to get somebody capable doing the job.

Just as a note - at the very beginning in the Alpha and after the release of MSFS2020 the night lighting was the most realistic - you can also see it in the feature discovery videos of MSFS2020.
Although there were basically no performance problems (guess not even on the Xbox) they suddenly decided to change it in later SU (whichever one that was) without any complaints from the community - the visibility was also reduced. About the current lighting - yes, the mask isn’t really nice - but it’s supposed to simulate lighting in the distance and is probably also responsible for the illumination of the clouds.
But the night lighting doesn’t look that bad in itself - although it’s not really 3D spills.
And I often read the comparisons to X-Plane here - yes, the lighting is better there because of the 3D spills, but I find the lighting in X-Plane (untweaked) a bit ‘lifeless’ - anyone who flies in real at night knows what it looks like - everything glows and glows - I miss that in X-Plane.
Many things look very different from the air than from the ground - so please make these comparisons “yes, but I don’t see it that way” - first take a look from above and then you can evaluate.
Especially in the twilight MSFS looks very good.
This is sometimes done better in MSFS. Yes, the POIs are also a bit too illuminated - but the approach is good - should just be improved.

Cannot go with you sorry. Nightlighting in MSFS2024 is terrible. A simply sepia map putted over all instead of real lights. Especially in higher flightlevels you only see a sepia map. The complete ground in urban areas are covered by this ugly sepia map with all fields, buildings and so on. Additional in the 24-Version is the illumination from sepia to the clouds. Terrible. You only need to compare to real night-light photos and you will see how it should look!

You misunderstood me – I didn’t say that it looks good because of the sepia mask – I said that the lights themselves don’t look bad – and that the sepia mask is probably used to ‘simulate’ that – I didn’t say that I find it beautiful or realistic. I didn’t say that it looks good.
And the lighting only looked really good at the beginning.
By ‘looks good,’ I meant that the lights recreate a certain light fog (or some kind of that) that often occurs in real life.
And yes, I fly very often in real life :-), and lights (and spills) are not always individual points without ‘glowing’ – that’s what I meant. In X-Plane, you have to tweak the lights.ini file a bit and play around with datarefs to achieve this, which in turn affects performance.
That’s what I mean!

As usual they claimed its fixed and it’s not. Sim looks terrible at night, why is the ground glowing in the middle of the desert?

When was it claimed to be fixed? Last official word I’ve seen is that improvements are planned for SU4?

Err, here TOO BRIGHT: Unrealistic and Overexaggerated Airport and Night Lighting in MSFS 2024, bloom too high, light sprites too big, Sepia mask is unrealistic
