I just tried a flight from KSAN TO KLAX to check on the status of the latest updates. The CJ4 looked great but the airport scenery looked like the graphics were set to 200x320! blurred, grainy, melted buildings everywhere, even the runway markings were blurry and grainy as I taxied to take off. Just awful. After takeoff the clouds looked horribly fake and posterized in what looked like 30 year old 8 bit color. I see all these shots that look so real but mine continues to look terrible. The last time I flew this sim after the last updates, I had the same problem. It never looks any better. I’m getting 40-60fps at 4K. I tried medium high, high, ultra, always the same. AMD Ryzen 7, 32gigs ram, Nvidia 2080 super. Somehow FS just doesn’t want to render the scenery for me and I’m just not sure what to try.
Ever used Photoshop to fractally scale up an image ? It “simulates” additional detail by interpolating pixels, recursively to give you an image which should look really blocky, but doesn’t.
Now think of it in reverse. As you go higher, you “scale down” each tile, so that though you are using more tiles, you don’t use more memory.
Instead of using ZL type graphic sources for views at different altitudes, start with the most detailed ZL tiles ( ground altitude at airport ), pull in and cache more tiles ( at same level of detail ) for takeoff and up to 10000 ft AGL. Use the scaling down technique to compress the detailed tiles to smaller versions for climbs above 10k agl, repeat as you climb to higher FLs.
This does mean recomputing the images to fit the ground mesh. Going this route means we will have a smaller ortho image size, but potentially the same mesh size/tris - mesh doesn’t change with altitude ( or does it? … idk ). But that’s an opportunity to calculate a simpler mesh as well… be kinder to the Gpu?
I don’t play the game anymore except to do vfr in small props. I do like the cockpit visuals ( reminds me of a simulator called Fly! ) and the new lighting engine.
This is how blurry it looks on my PC flying over Spain at max graphic settings and with 1gbs internet speed
Your internet speed would have nothing to do with that. Its probably up to Microsoft if to provide Asobo higher res imagery.I think a big issue with higher res imagery its going to chew up more ram.
It’s already loading high resolution imagery at low altitude. The problem is the sim decides to replace it with a blurry version too soon.
Read this thread and my posts here of what’s messed in this visually. It has further detoiriated.

Tested at all levels and distances.
old thread, but I’ve been noticing this a lot lately too and it’s really breaking the immersion. flying through the caribbean and trying to enjoy all of the beautiful volcanic islands as a passenger. however, looking down at them they are incredibly blurry. it’s like as soon as you get above a certain altitude the sim just assumes you don’t care about high-quality ortho imagery and blurs it…to save something? i dunno.
i’ve flown a lot in XPlane and downloaded lots of ortho imagery, and it did not blur them like this when you got up high. There really needs to be an option in the sim to stop it from doing this for folks with higher-end PCs.
guess all we can do is post about it and if we get enough backers maybe they’ll consider adding the option in a few years
For real, click this picture i uploaded, so blurry
After 2 years the problem has become worst!
It’s a very annoying bug that ruins the entire immersion.
yup. this has never been fixed and I have a feeling it won’t until possibly MSFS 2024
For a while now, I’ve had extremely blurry ground textures, which significantly impacts my flying experience.
My System Configuration:
- Operating System: Windows 11
- DirectX: Version 12
- Graphics Card: Nvidia RTX 4090
- Internet Connection: My bandwidth is not maxed out, so this shouldn’t be the issue.
Steps Taken So Far:
I have tried changing various graphics settings, but the problem persists. I have not attempted to reinstall the simulator, as this would take several days due to server speed and the file size (over 150 GB).
Has anyone experienced similar issues or have any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?
Thank you in advance for your help!
I dont know for sure what happened. But turn off anisotropic filtering in game. And use your video card driver for it. It fixed it right up for me. Good as new
Thank you. Didn’t work in my case. The Game is broken.
If the game was broken. I wouldnt have sharp clear textures as far as i can see. Its somewhere, we just need to figure it out. Whats different between our two systems, and settings. More than one thing im sure
I have now tried various graphics settings and invested another five working hours in troubleshooting. Unfortunately, without success. It seems to be related to a very poorly optimized terrain-texture LODing system. The problem cannot be resolved, and the simulator is not usable for me in this state. The rolling cache could not solve the problem, and creating a manual cache is not possible because the Microsoft Flight Simulator does not allow the creation of manual cache files. The process hangs, and even after eight hours, the manual cache file is still not generated. It seems to be broken as well.
Try turning off super sampling in the sim, reset Nvidia control panel to defaults then select the top option in manage 3d settings in Nvidia control panel.
Thank you. will give it a try!
anisotropic filtering is a method of enhancing the image quality of textures that are at oblique viewing angles with respect to the camera where the projection of the texture appears to be non-orthogonal, so it has nothing to do with straight locking down texture sharpnes let a alone resolution.
the two things the texture resolution is tied to is the Terrain LOD, and since this is Asobo/MS we had this bug before and logged. But either it go introduced again or was never resolved in the first place, and then is there the second aspect, bandwith, and since, again this is in the sens of profit, its not only your bandwith but also the providing server ones which sometimes seem to be too limited for the amount of users at a given time, it could be just that.
