Sim update 15 ruined the game

Basically if WMR is running and you start FS2020 the whole PC is freezing, mouse stops moving, messages appear like “no internet” its as if the whole PC is getting overwhelmed. This happens even when FS2020 is loading. Emptying community folder makes no difference and with a full community it starts up just fine without WMR running.

Everything was absolutely fine until sim update 15 forced its self onto my machine.

runs fine with me, no issues.

VR for me, after SU15, is a bit of a stutterfest. I am sure that I could spend an hour or twenty tweaking the settings and maybe even getting it back to somewhere close to where it was with SU14, but as I am getting seriously bored with the constant necessity to do so, I think I’ll give MSFS a bit of a break and fly something a little more military and certainly more VR-friendly.

Maybe MSFS2024 might consider VR pilots a little more and tempt me back, but only time will tell.

Black screen central.. this is by far the worst update ever.

WMR with HP Reverb G2 and it’s smoother than it’s ever been here. Steam install.

I just want to spend my sim-time flying and not constantly having to tweak the settings to get it anywhere near useable. Maybe it’s just worn me down.

Sounds like a you problem. If you post some specs maybe we can try and help.

I had my Quest 3 set up to work perfectly well on my 5800x3d/4080super/32MByte combo and all that has changed is the this update.

You might still be correct and it’s a kind offer, but like I said, I’m just tired of constantly having to mess around with the settings in MSFS to get any quality time actually flying.

I have been in the beta for a few weeks. Some locations, such as Mexico and the Caribbean, are fine. Others, like Switzerland, have had considerable stutters. As it so often is with MSFS, it has been difficult to pin down.

I was flying Oslo to Stockholm, the latest leg in my long-running tour of the world’s capital cities. Maybe I’ll try elsewhere in the world, but I did manage to fly into Oslo, before the update, without any major issues.

I’m on 13700/4080/32GB/Quest 3 and for me SU15 runs as good or may be even a tad smoother than SU14. As always with a SU, I’ve cleared the shader cache and scenery indices so try that if you haven’t already.

Hi,

I’ve been in the beta for weeks and the performance overall is down on SU14, which is a shame as I (and others as posted here) lost performance with that update as well. I have fresh install with no mods, What’s also more annoying is past VR bugs yet again ignored. The Shutdown Bug in particular, I was hoping it would be revisited but no, we’re stuck with something they don’t understand as proven in the Q & A.

I may only be one voice, but I’m now not going to purchase the next simulation from this development team, my faith and trust in them has been exhausted.

Thanks

My specs are i913900KF, 4090, 32GB ram, G2, latest WMR portal, latest GPU driver 555.85

My problems start as soon as FS2020 starts to load in (only with the WMR portal open though), basically as soon as the microsoft/Asobo splash screen loads in. The PC just freezes, everything stops working, the mouse freezes, any web pages open freeze, the keyboard stops responding, cant CTRL/ALT/DELETE out of it, sometimes error beeps are heard if you mash too many keys. Typical of something going horribly wrong.

If you don’t open the WMR portal then it loads in just fine and fly round perfect in 2D. WMR also works flawlessly doing other stuff such as steam, having a full or empty community folder makes no difference to the two scenarios.

As of yesterday before the update everything was working fine and the update is the only thing that has changed. Just before the update I opened WMR as I’ve always done, opened FS2020 and it started to load in just fine, everything was working as it should do, it then did a mandatory update to 15 and as soon as it had finished loading in everything started to freeze, didn’t even get to shut that session down properly, the only way to get out of it now is to hold the power button down on the PC.

Also I’ve never understood what these so called updates do for my benefit and I’ve seen all 15 of them. All I ever see is things getting progressively worse each time they happen, I’ve certainly not seen anything that makes my experience any better. Are they just a way to keep dumbing everything down so it works for the Xbox fanboys?

I will try that thanks, as now that I’ve had some sleep I’m feeling perhaps a little less negative.

I’m not yet on my sim PC, but the other thing that occurred to me is that could the demands on the MS servers/network infrastructure, caused by people downloading the update, be somehow interfering with the download of in-sim data? The spread of traffic across the “sim servers” might explain why some are getting a better experience than others. I think I’m on the Northern Europe one by the way.

I’ll give it another day’s worth of investigation/tweaking and see how it goes.

Thanks again.

Just to clarify, if you dont use Windows Mixed Reality then the Sim works ok? I know WMR will eventually be depreciated, but make sure you’ve done a windows update to make sure everything is up to date. Then its a case of troubleshooting and working through to see whats causing it to freeze. Often its 3rd party drivers or software, for example I has ASUS arourer crate sofrware cause issues for me.

I’d try the following:

  1. Dissable e-cores and HT in the bios and just run off performance cores for now and see if that improves things
  2. Ensure you’ve run disk cleanup and make sure you have enought space
  3. Make sure your swap file is on managed and not dissable or limitted in size
  4. Turn off things like Frame Generation and DLSS for now and use TAA until you determine the freezes
  5. Are you using DX11 or DX12?

Kindest regards

Also not having any problems with the non-beta su15 update I got earlier today. This is working very well with my Q3 and QPro headsets (non-beta v65) with Link and Air Link, and nvidia 552.44 (DDU used to uninstall previous driver beforehand). Win11, PC is i913900k/rtx4090/32Gb 6400ram. Running with dx11 and HAGS disabled.

Like you, I clear my DX cache and delete msfs rolling cache, then enable it again. I also clear my community folder.

So far, su15 has been the best update so far, for me anyway. Also, the update download was the fastest I’ve ever had (16Gb standard and 14Gb other updates only took about 30 minutes).

Sorry to hear that some continue to have problems. I think it’s a good idea to stay out of beta’s and I avoid updating to the latest nvdia drivers unless I hear a lot of positive results.

Edit; Now also tested with my Vive Pro1 (amoled screens, etsy lens mod, 2x2.0 base stations, and Index controllers). All working great!

Well, it would appear that your assistance has prevented me from departing for pastures new, at least for now.

I cleared the Nvidia GL cache, DX wasn’t there for some reason, also deleted my MSFS rolling cache and my performance appears to have returned to around where it was prior to the update.

Many thanks for your help.

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

No issues here. In fact, I think my VR experience in the sim is smoother after SU15.

14900k 4090 64GB ram etc. and a Quest 2.

Runs perfect with Fenix, PMDG, any large payware airports. Locked in a 45 FPS all day long and smooth no sutters.

You may be on to something. I never update the day it is released, i always wait 4 days or so. I have never had a problem with updates or performance. My system is not even yhe greatest…i7 9700k, rtx3060ti,nvme ssd samsung,32gig ddr4 . 1080p most things on ultra load distance or whatever is called I keep at 100 or 120. Runs beautifully, no stutters. No major add ons and have not updated to su 15 yet…fungers crossed!

Hey Deelee,

Can I ask how much memory youre system is using? I am thinking upgrading to 64.
See quite some use in SU15.
Whats youre experience if I may ask?

Kind regards
