I know when i use Simbrief for the A320N i add the ILS or RNAV once in the flight.
Moved to #third-party-addon-discussion:tools-utilities for discussion of third party tools and tagged #simbrief.
The briefing can and does include the actual SID/STAR, but the actual approach is not included. I believe that this does reflect real world LIDO formats.
I believe that real world flightplans never include the approach, because that is always assigned by ATC based on traffic, weather, etc. at the time of approach. But I’m not a real pilot, so don’t quote me…
I have used Simbrief several times now with the TBM, and the flight plan, when you look at it in the G3000, approaches are included. Sometime ILS, other times RNAV, but the approach has always been included, and works. Will try Simbrief with the 172 to see if approach in included.
I just tested Simbrief with the following route:
KJFK/22R DEEZZ5 CANDR J60 DJB OXI8 KORD/RAHNN.I04R
The route box will not accept either the departing runway or the approach. I can put the SID and STAR in.
If your flying GA. Chances are your going to be using low airways vs high and Simbrief seems to always suggest high airways. I think because its been more tailored toward airliners vs GA.
I do my lateral planning outside of Simbreif and then paste the route into the route box.
I use Navigraph but Skyvector works as well.
Also lots (maybe most?) sid and stars have minimum altitude and/or speed restrictions that most GA aircraft are not capable of.
I will do my lateral GA IRF flight planning to what I think is the closest and most logical waypoint to the destination airport. Sometimes all of the airports approaches will begin from a waypoint on an airway or a VOR.
I let ATC assign the approach. Note I use Pilot2ATC and not the in sim ATC so YMMV.
I have no authority to say this is exact to IRL but I think its pretty close.
Lots of good info here:
I was just going ask how Simbeirf distinguishes between VFR and IFR. There doesn’t seem to be a place to set either one as you can in the World Map. I don’t fly airliners, only GA, and mostly the TBM. I think might have to do with the plane type you use in Simbeirf whether you get VFR or IFR, but not sure of that. Just tried amping up the speed in the plane profile, it didn’t change a thing.

I assume you mean the Rout Box in Simbrief, is that correct?
Thanks for the response.
You could plan your route in SkyVector ( Hi, Lo or VFR) and then copy the route into simbrief to create your plan. Into the Routing box.
Yes I take this from Navigraph Charts:
And put it here in Simbrief:
You do have to put the source and destination airport in Simbrief first up top.
You really shouldn’t be using Simbrief for VFR flight plans. Simbrief is primarily a generator of IFR plans for commercial jets. There are other tools out there – many of them completely free – that will help you plan VFR flights better than Simbrief does. Or you can just use the in-sim map, which works just fine for VFR. (The VOR-to-VOR option works well for VFR flying.)
Thanks, I was coming to that conclusion. I like simpler craft flying over the scenery. I’ve been using the World Map, now that I found the filters, and it works just fine for light GA planes.
