SimTrim: Analog Trim Wheel Snapping Issue Fix

Hey all,

So, I found a problem with analog trim wheels: They don’t synchronize well with flight simulator. I experienced a snapping issue when using my analog trim wheel just after takeoff or after turning off autopilot. I thought I could fix this by writing desktop software to address this problem, and I have to say, the problem is now gone. I call the software SimTrim.

I think many of you have experienced the same problem, so I decided it was worth sharing: Enhance Your Flight Experience With SimTrim Today | Makers Point.

The following excellent video from SimHanger shows SimTrim in action and how it synchronises your controller to eliminate this snapping issue, as well as setting the sensitivity for both analog and digital trim:

SimTrim works with any analog controller. I mainly use my own trim wheel (Enhance Your Flight Sim With Trim Wheel Pro | Makers Point), which is a free DIY 3D-printed trim wheel and also works very well with SimTrim as does every other controller I have tried. However, this post is about SimTrim, so I won’t go into details here. Trim Wheel Pro is there if you’re interested anyway.

Several attempts have been made to address problems with digital trim wheels (such as the authentikit tuning app: Home), but nothing has been done from an analog perspective, at least not to my knowledge.

The ‘SimTrim Software’ can be found directly on my resource page: Essential Resources For Makers: Free Downloads & Links | Makers Point and if you download and run it, you will be presented with something like this (depending on which controllers you have on your system):

Synchronizing your axis through SimTrim is simple; just flick the synced switch in SimTrim, and that’s it. Ensure you clear the axis assignments for the elevator trim axis within the flight sim controls (see: Enhance Your Flight Experience With SimTrim Today | Makers Point for instructions) and let SimTrim work its magic . You can even adjust the sensitivity on the fly via the associated slider to tweak the trim to your liking.

SimTrim is free to use and enjoy, but I would love to hear what you think and how you get on with it.

Please let me know if you have any questions, comments or suggestions.

I really like the sound of this and am looking at my old Saitek Cessna trimwheel on the shelf. Thanks for posting this.

No worries. I really hope the software benefits as many people as possible, as I use it all the time myself. It’s a must-have for me.
Let me know if there are problems.

Does it also work fine in MSFS 2024 (Trim Axis -100 TO 100%) with the old Saitek Pro Flight Cessna Trim Wheel? Thanks!

Short answer. Yes.

Longer answer. MSFS2020 and MSFS2024 work with SimTrim equallly well. I know that people have used that trim wheel with no problems as well. And it’s free, so there’s no risk in trying it.
