Sky4sim virtual iPad (maps, frequencies, weather, pdf viewer and more)

What res were you running at? It was originally fine at 1080 then tiny text at 4k and that has been changed so it’s scaled better. Haven’t tried 1080 and I don’t have VR. Previously the text seems to try to scale but then always snapped back to being tiny. At 4k now it scales fine, this was a major issue before for me. Agree about the many boxes, but you can filter airports, vors and ndbs to off when you don’t need them or set a radius for displaying them. I think the default is 100 miles or something like that.

The monitor that I had Sky4Sim running on is a 1080P monitor. I use a 32" 4K monitor for flight sim when I’m not using my G2 for VR.

I guess there are a whole lot of scaling targets for the app. Not sure how it scales fonts, but it has to try to work on desktop browsers, in game at 4k, 1080 and VR. Potentially on external tablet browser too. There are a lot of sizings for this app to cater for.

I’m not happy with the new update.
In my case the text is too big which is really disturbing on the map. For now I stop using sky4sim until this will be corrected. :frowning:
FYI I have a 27 inch and resolution is 1440p

I hope this will be reviewed.

Here’s mine. It’s even worse in VR. The text is way too big and the icons are also very intrusive. There ought to be a setting to change this but I can’t find it.

I didn’t have an issue in VR with them being too big. If anything they seemed small, but I resize my pad kind of large and put it in the co-pilot seat.

I do have issues with the airport pop-up getting in the way. Sometimes they are hard to close. A map click or close button could help.

I also wish the airport maps were better like in Littlenavmap. I’m not sure if that’s from open street map or just in lNM. Navigating taxiways without assistance markings or LNM is tough.

I did have some slight differences on the route line with the G530. But as soon as you make inflight adjustments anyway, keeping them synced would take a full time copilot.

Overall, way easier to use in VR than any other solution I’ve seen. I was able to plot a final approach after getting ATC clearance!! Without leaving VR!!

Littlenavmap just gets supper laggy and has no zoom when using the web server.

I’m sure it will, probably some coding to detect your resolution and adjust accordingly… I hope we don’t lose these bigger fonts (I’m using VR and 4K so it’s perfect now  )

Forget if the developer is here or not, but another cool option would be a split screen view with waypoints and heading.

Definitely, my favorite community mod for use in VR!

Outside of VR I think I prefer LNM, but it’s a little harder making on the flight plan adjustments on the fly. Also, creating the plan in Sky4Sim starts off on the runway instead of parking.

Any way to sync flight plan changes to MSFS or is that world map only? Having that open to community to sync with the flight computer would be killer.

Just noticed something odd with the GPS navigation.

I thought the lines were off between the SIM G530 and Sky4Sim, but I used autopilot for the first time and I’m tracking straight on Sky4Sim and off to the right on the Garmin and sim VFR Map.

I made a VR discovery that works amazing with this app. It’s probably something everyone knows, but you can use the scroll wheel to move windows in 3D space. This made readability so much better still.

I discovered that by accident as well - indeed it’s a good tip, If using VR controller you can also grab the window and pull it towards you

I’ve seen many posts that make me think not everyone knows this stuff yet. I just suffered for like a month before figuring out I could just pull a window in closer! The pixilation just goes away.

Being in VR is a bit like being a baby figuring out how to navigate the world.

Hi, is it possible to write notes on this pad?

With the new update there is a text notes page, however you need to type by clicking an on screen keyboard

A bit intrigued with this one due to the attention it gets and the updates it receives. But I don’t really care to use it in-game, so how easy is it to use it on a real ipad? I imagine it’ll require spacedesk or something similar.

It’s more a simulated iPad so I don’t know there is a way to do that unless that what spacedesk does? It just fills a major VR/VFR gap in being able to navigate with an external tool.

In 2D mode, I’d probably stick to LittleNavMap since there are so many more details available.

What Sky4sim is great at is being something simple that works, like what Apple would make. When I first loaded it I was wondering what the big deal was.

I find much of the aviation and aviation sim tools to be complex and dated with their UI.

I too am having trouble opening a flight plan. I have the locations OK, the flight plan shows up in the menu. If I single or double click the plan, it does not show up on the map. Have clicked the magnifying glass as well but it will still not load in the map. Any help greatly appreciated. John

I actually haven’t tried it yet on a browser on an external IPad tablet, but it should be possible as the external sky4sim app spawns a web server which the in game plug in loads/uses. You can open the sky4sim app in an external browser too (I use Firefox for this), so I imagine you can do that on a real IPad/phone (with access to your network) too as you can also do with other apps of this nature.
The only issue you usually encounter is that the web server is spawned on a windows system port that the dev has assigned for that puropse, so if you are running anti-virus/firewall you may have to go in to the firewall and open that port up for HTTP access on other devices.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work, especially with the new improved scaling it has in latest version of the app.

Perfect, thanks a lot for the detailed answer! I don’t care about VR or in-game solutions, so I searched left and right and I couldn’t find a proper standalone efb/kneeboard that would work without much trouble on a physical tablet AND connect with MSFS. Some similar payware stuff that I found were double the price without offering any exceptionally different features.

On the other hand Spacedesk simply acts as a service to use a tablet as an external PC monitor and has its uses (e.g. to view cockpit display screens or desktop apps like Little Navmap) so I could detach Sky4sim’s pad and send it to that extremal screen, but it’s not ideal as a very responsive kneeboard where you also have to type, keep handwritten notes etc.

I’ll probably get Sky4sim tonight and try your suggestion.

The webserver spawns on port http :// 127.0.0.1:18085/

so assuming you can see this local network IP and you open your port up you should be fine.
I keep meaning to try it out, but I usually always use it in game, or in browser.
There are a couple of other freeware options Little Nav Map that does web server too as does MSFS Mobile Companion App (flightsim.to), but I find myself hooked on using sky4sim as it has all the nav info a few mouse clicks away. Invaluable when doing IFR on the fly (pardon the pun). It’s also great for getting weather data for destinations and listing all the nav beacon frequencies and runway headings/type of runway, ILS frequencies etc
I haven’t used the PDF function a lot as it seems a bit non intuitive, same goes for flightplans (it would be good if it could auto pull in the FS map flightplan for example like littlenavmap does) , but that’s not my primary function with this tool.
