It’s the resolution of the snow data. It needs to be much smaller, at the moment it looks like snow data comes in like 10km squares, where it should be like 1/10 of that
To be fair he did say “sometime ago the units seem to have changed” and they didn’t notice, probably the data provided by them changed units from eg. mm to cm or something.
But I don’t understand how it makes sense, maybe for the water being ice covered but the bigger issue IMO is the low resolution map. I’m also surprised he said the team “thinks” this will solve these issues. You’d think they have an internal build to test it before they announce fixes here.
But I guess we’ll see soon enough when SU14 beta arrives.
Wish there was an option just to turn off snow mesh, although im sure its not that simple.
Why not? You can switch all of live weather (including snow) on and off with a toggle in the blink of an eye. Also, every feature of the weather can be dynamically changed in seconds with sliders.
I don’t believe that isolating the snow layer and making it removable in Live Weather (just like you can turn thermal visualisation on and off) is a monumental task for any skilled programmer.
Thats the problem tho, its all or nothing. Use live weather with inaccurate snow layers or disable live weather completely. Doesnt sound like a good choice to me.
Yeah, I’m just saying that the sim already has the ability to show and remove snow on the fly. The ability to turn it off just needs to be uncoupled from the rest of Live Weather.
Call me pessimistic but I have absolutely zero faith in them fixing this issue beyond a slight improvement, based on how they’ve talked about it (and how long it’s taken them to). I’m hoping for the best, but expecting that it’s going to just be somewhat smaller random patches of snow.
It isn’t just about the resolution of the data. The game often seems to use very outdated data too. And the snow itself just looks so bad in how it obscures all of the terrain features completely and automatically turns bodies of water into thick Arctic sheet ice.
Just give us a button to turn it off. I find it endlessly frustrating how they built this awesome 75% finished live weather system on launch that’s capable of being incredible, then proceeded to not finish it for three years aside from adding some broken, buggy new features like METAR integration and snow cover, while still keeping the entire thing locked down to the third party developers who could actually fix it.
at every update I read all the changelog in hope to find a “better snow coverage”, but no way.
at this point, I really hope in msfs2024.
…isn’t Asobo a french company? why they hate alps (and Pyrenees) so much?
it’s been years I’m trying to find a way to remove snow texture somehow.
I’m not enough a good modder
Many Himalayan airports also got snow in the sim, even during summer. Hope they can fix this area also in SU14. A good example is ZUNZ airport.
isn’t Asobo a french company? why they hate alps (and Pyrenees) so much?
I agree. Why can’t they fix the snow issue after over a year! Everything in the alps is covered in snow when in reality most of the valleys are snow free in November!
I wish there were a switch to disable snow altogether!
What world are Asobo living in when they think that the sea freezes like this?
How can they deem this acceptable?
Yeah, we now got two World Updates for the Nordics, and I like the latest one a lot! But sadly we will have yet another winter in Norway where we will have to use preset weather, because Live Weather will get your Fjords all frozen solid - at least that is what early reports from SU XIV Beta suggest.
And that is not entirely unexpected, because as Sebastian Wloch admitted already in November '22: “the data is there, it’s just about the time in which we can implement this”..
And a moment later Jorg Neuman connected this to the Weather Radar API said" the data resolution is there, but we don’t see it in the sim".
They also blamed some failures within SU9 for it to get broken, but effectively nothing has changed since.
And guess what: in the last Q&A Seb again blamed some previous update for the issues with snow coverage in general, but did not mention insufficient data this time.
It seems to me that they simply don’t care!
More a case of priorities I expect. I can only imagine the huge list of defects they have to address, and it’s natural that some will be more important than others. Crashes for example.
Im sure we’d all love them to fix everything overnight, but I would imagine when planning a future SU, and it’s preceding beta, they set the scope of what that is to achieve. Some things make it in, others do not.
But to suggest they don’t care, I find that hard to believe.
How come they announced talks with Meteoblue a year ago, promised to inform about the outcome, didn’t do so and then nearly a year later state that further improvements may be possible with possible talks with Meteoblue?
And announce tornadoes for MSFS 2024 instead, wich literally nobody asked for?
I think (or hope) there is more to these Live Weather topics, but the communication is lacking - to put it mildly.
Hello @TomL7753,
There is an active Wishlist topic originally created in January 2021 requesting that tornadoes be added to the sim. It currently has 68 replies and 49 votes as of this writing.
Thanks,
MSFS Team
Ok, so 49 votes for tornadoes and 291 for snow coverage.
But of course it hasn’t been “bug logged” tagged yet, although it is pretty easy to replicate - every time!
Let’s hope for SU XIV or MSFS2024.
Improving snow coverage in Live Weather is one of the improvements prioritized for the upcoming Sim Update 14. It’s not perfect yet and still being refined (specifically for areas like New Zealand), but one of our volunteer community beta testers confirmed that snow in Norway (specifically Oslo) now perfectly matches the real-world weather.
Thanks,
MSFS Team
I sincerely hope for the best outcome, as the effort that has gone into creating these nice airports in Norway (ENLK, ENRA) and all the other assets calls for a plausible environment, and approaching ENRA overhead a solid frozen Fjord is a shame, as they never freeze irl - even if it is pretty cold there already.
This sim shines in these environments (New Zealand and the Milford Sound as well), and it is annoying to have to set the weather by hand every time just to get it to be immersive.
