It’s about half a year ago (at least it feels like it) since they adressed this in one of the Q&As.
Since then: Silence.
Also: Their “solution” of more resolution of the meteo blue snow coverage maps will help, but not really solve the issue.
if meteo blue shots snow close to a lake, then the lakes will sill be “frozen”. Which makes zero sense in 99% of all cases in Europe or the US and most other countries.
It was in the Nov. 18th stream, so not exactly half a year.
They specifically addressed this as part of the “frozen water” issue ( Will we see high-quality snow coverage so we don’t see snow and frozen water in places it shouldn’t be, like in the Alps, Norway, Alaska?).
If you look at meteoblue it very much looks to me like it does have the resolution to handle lakes of any meaningful size. That alone is a huge step up. I’m very hopeful this will get resolved soon.
This is what it looked like when I was there last… in pretty much the dead middle of winter lol.
At least with the other broken eternal winter areas, like in Alaska, Norway etc, they actually are completely covered in snow in winter. Milford Sound does not look like that ever.
This is Milford Sound in Meteoblue data, the sea surface T is way above freezing. The issue is with MS, they seem to be making awfully little effort to integrate the available weather data in general. In the weather models behind the Meteoblue data, lake water temperature is also determined.
As far as we know the sim only looks at the snow depth map, and only the lowest resolution of it.
Anywhere in this rectangular shape will be like flying in the antartic.
Any snow? Frozen lakes and everything white, with a bit of mixing where it transitions. Temperature (let alone water temperature) is not taken into account.
The weird thing about NZ is that when you zoom in just a little bit snow coverage completely dissapears.
It’s where it switches from GFS05 Global datasource to NEMSNZ. The two sources seem to completely disagree.
Is there any info that this problem will be solved in near future? Found an Beta entry “Fixed a problem where in water presets, water would be iced for the physics but displayed as water in the rendering.”. But this is another problem I didn’t noticed until now.
It probably will automatically be fixed, when the higher detail snow coverage map gets used, but that will first have to be negotiated with navblue.
Let’s hope they give us an update in the next Q&A in two weeks.
Cause the “quaterly meetings with meteo blue” must have been held, more time than a quater has passed now since the Nov Q&A, so they sould be able to tell us now when they finally fix this massive issue that should be a top priority in my eyes.
April 2, 2023. Flight near Thun (LSZW) Live weather.
There is no snow in reality today, April 2, 2023, and even if there were snow, the lake would not have been frozen. This lake is never frozen.
So in this state Live Weather in MSFS is simply unusable. Why by the hell you don’t finally fix this mistake.
Crazy, Switzerland in this hot summer.
Still the old, VERY unprecise snow coverage data. Still no accurate live weather snow coverage, despite Sebastian aknowledged the issue last NOVEMBER! Soon a year ago.
Crazy.
I wonder if they will ever care to fix this. Even though they just would need to use the more accurate data as they confirmed.
As mentioned elsewhere, a simple option to turn on or off snow completely would already do the trick for 90% of the issue. But no…
Maybe (hopefully) this gets resolved with the release of MSFS 2024. It would make sense as it‘s part of seasons which will come with 24.
They said in the Q&A of Nov 2022 that they would just have to inject the more acurate data and would discuss this with the data provider in their quaterly meetings.
Now, like 3 quarters later, they still have not fixed.
They don’t need 2024 for this for sure, they just have to inject the more acurate data. That’s it.
Either they don’t get it, or, more likely, they just forgot about it.
3 years in my conclusion is they simply don’t care about this. I predict Asobo will ignore it until MSFS2024 arrives. They’ve known about this ever since the sim was in Alpha testing, more like 4 years ago! So I’ve given up hope for the 2020 version

Yes
Brief description of the issue:
The ice coverage is still nowhere near adequate. It plonks ice down everywhere, both on fresh water which is currently not frozen at all, and on salt water fjords which only freezes over in the innermost few hundred yards in extreme cold weather, a very rare event.
An on/off option should have been introduced with this snow coverage two years ago, because it causes way more distraction than immersion in coastal areas.

Provide time & date of the observed Weather issue
Real weather 2130z, sim time changed to noon for picture.
Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:
Go to any coastal area that have snow cover, compare sim to real life (web cam) and behold the abundant erroneous ice sheets.

I agree. Nothing has been fixed in terms of the frozen lakes
Very very disappointing.
They still seem to fundamentelly not understand the problem.
Brienzersee / Thuntersee in Switzerland. Frozen in the sim. NOT frozen in reality of course.
Vierwaldstättersee in Switzerland. Partially frozen. NOT frozen in reality. It never freezes.
So sad. More than a year ago, Seb from Asobo talked about these areas in a live stream and that they look into it.
A year later now, with SU14, they claim to have more or less fixed this issue.
But they did not.
They did not claim that the issue is fixed, why everybody is claiming that? They said, they found a calculation error in their data procedure resulting in 10x more snow that actually is reported and because the freezing of the water is linked to the snow depth, this was the reason for many frozen lakes/seas (but of course not all).
Means: if snow coverage is still above the threshold, the lake/sea will be depicted frozen even if the 10x wrong calculation is now corrected. As there was quiet a lot of snow over the last days in Berner Oberland, I guess the threshold is still exceeded.
Or in other words: they still did not fix the totally borked snow depth vs. frozen waters correlation which simply does not make sense in vast parts of the world. But they never claimed to have it fixed to be honest.
Does not make this annyoing bug better, I agree, and it bears the risk that the devs think themselves that they have solved the issue. And as they obviously never use their own sim to actually test their changes, I sadly agree that this might never be properly fixed anyway. Bummer, again another year (or more) of no live weather flying in the Swiss alps (or the need to use REX instead).
“Chill out?”
(Just kidding. I couldn’t resist.)
Here are some pictures from North of Norway. ENTC, ENAT and ENSR area. These fjords are not frozen in real life, but in the sim they still are. Svalbard/Longyear airport area is also still frozen. The Adventfjord leading into Longyearbyen used to be covered with ice during winter season. But since 2005 it has been open with no solid ice.
The bug still appears after SU14, but there are some improvements.
