True. The depressing thing is that it was already a lot closer to greatness before SU5, thats when the shimmer intensified by a lot. It was so much crisper before, especially with the “2nd render scale at 200%” - “hack”.
SU5 was a big step backwards in visual fidelity, though overall the FPS did get much more consistent.
I just dont understand how they can have testers using the G2 (which they should have since it’s basocally the flagship WMR HMD) and not notice or care about this hugely obvious and highly problematic shimmer issue.
I never once managed to get that hack to work. That was when I had a Quest 2 though. My VR experience with the sim has only really come into its own in the last few weeks since upgrading to a G2. Infact its only really in the last few days since mucking about with NIS that its really where I want it. Only now am seeing VR as something I want to use more than my flat screen.
I still think its on the edge of greatness though. Although its very smooth there’s the shimmer issue and the screen flickering. Also, like with the sim pre SU5 I do somewhat have to worry about what plane you fly and where. Its still much better than it was.
I’m envious of those that have got an Aero pre-ordered. Thats probably where things need to be if you’re really into VR in a big way. Better software optimisation and a headset thats where you really want VR to be in terms of field of view and visual clarity. I just can’t afford one though. Its way more than I can justify spending on a headset.
So, I went into 2d with NIS engaged for 50% sharpening, but no scaling (100%). I have a 4k monitor, but I have my desktop set to 1920x1080p. Rather than change it back to 4k, I dragged the in game render scale to 200 for 3840x2160. No shimmer, no jaggies, no stutters, no online functionality because the servers were messed up today, just 4k smoothness at 70ish fps. I kept the TLOD to 75 and the BLOD to 30 and turned up some eye candy for a really nice ride in Vertigo. VR is nice, but it can’t beat this.
I tried an interesting combination of settings tonight: 100%OXR, 150% In Game, and 50% NIS. The theory here is that the 150% upscaling In Game is “inexpensive” and the 50% NIS downscaling is very performant. I believe this helps with the shimmering.
Very nice video. But, I’m actually shocked at how successful the G2 Hype Train was. Especially in view of the fact that the G1 had delivered an almost identical picture years before, but was almost ignored by the buyers.
