I use my machine purely for flight sim. I only use the FBW A320. I HAD a mixture of settings between ultra and high.

The sim has been running very smooth and essentially faultless for a number of months including since the update to 1.16.2.0.

I was undertaking a flight into Macco Simulations EGCC (Manchester) the other day and had been in the sim approx 1.5 hours. Suddenly my frame rates dropped on finals and rendered the game pretty much unplayable. Im going to estimate they were about about 12-15fps (based on experience).

For a benchmark and to ensure continuity I have selected High as the settings in FS and am still getting the same. Only clears up when I drop settings to Low.

I have tested again at many airports, both defaults and add on and get the same. I have tested with community folder cleared and with default FS jets.

I have also noticed that FS has become slower on startup and the flythrough screen (not sure of its official name) when the flight has loaded and ready to select “fly now” is also stuttering and bad on frame rates.

Could really do with some step by step pointers please - I dont particularly understand PC’s beyond the basics and would have no idea how to find a memory leak for example.

Many thanks - I’ve never had it this bad since FS98.

Others may be able to provide more technical assistance than me but these are the things I would look at for myself if your situation happened to me.

  1. Check to see whether the graphics card drivers were updated recently and if so, does the date coincide with the change in performance. If so, attempt to roll back to a previous driver version.

  2. Clear any cached data from the rolling cache and see if toggling it on/off makes a difference.

  3. Run an anti-virus scan and make sure there isn’t an infection or malicious programme running in the background

  4. Try flying in a variety of different locations and different planes to see if there’s some specific SIM content or combination causing an issue.

  5. See if you hard drive is full or close to full and if so clear a bit of space.

  6. Check you internet connection speed and see if the performance is being affected by slow download speed

  7. Take a look at any any windows updates and see if there’s a link between those and the performance issue. Is there a ‘system restore point’ saved on your system that you could roll back to?

  8. Was any other software installed recently? Anything else running in the background?

  9. Open up a performance window while running the SIM and see whether anything is maxxed out, so is the memory completely full and system using lots of disk activity? Is the CPU maxxed out?

  10. Run a scan on the drive to see if it needs optimising.

  11. Do you have MSFS installed on an external drive and if so consider changing location to internal drive.

  12. Do you have MSFS installed on an SSD, if not, then consider using an SSD instead.

Those are all the sanity checks I can think of. Although judging from your system, some of them are probably irrelevant. But nevertheless, it’s possibly a start for doing some checking.

Try to go into your Motherboard BIOS and disable Hardware Virtualization Technology or AMD-V or something similar like that. They’re generally enabled by default, so you have to go in and manually disable it.

I disabled this on my BIOS, and my FPS jumped from 10-15 on LOW into 30 on ULTRA.

There is a solution by the community member MrFuzzy4528:
if you disable all the optional windows in the “menue bar” you get a significant performance improvement … disable CAMERA / MAP / ATC ( ATC is useless anyway ) … Rest can stay
try it … good luck

Go to options > traffic
aicraft traffic type - off
save changes

Go to options > data
live real-world air traffic - off
multiplayer - off
save changes

That setting is so lonely though…

I wonder if this is one of those CoherentGTDraw issues?

You start off flying okay, then as the flight progresses the frame rate tanks for no apparent reason. Some users have reported this happening mid-cruise.

I turn off the VFR map from the top menu settings to completely get rid of it, and my FPS improves.

I see the same issue. I used to get decent FPS with EVGA 3090 FTW3. After this update my FPS fell to 15-20. During approach to landing it falls as low as 2-5. Its pretty much unplayable. I turned off vt-d, hyper threading still same issue. X-plane works like a charm. I am 100% certain this has to do with the upgrade. I used to play every day before that and did not have an issue even with the bigger jets. I hope they provide a way to revert back to an older version.

Try lowering the AI ground traffic density to zero. This could solve your fps drops on approach and landing.

All - thanks for the replies. Sorry for delay in responding.

  1. Check to see whether the graphics card drivers were updated recently and if so, does the date coincide with the change in performance. If so, attempt to roll back to a previous driver version.

No - the sim was running perfectly and broke during the final approach of the flight - no updates to any drivers.

  1. Clear any cached data from the rolling cache and see if toggling it on/off makes a difference.

Done - no change.

  1. Run an anti-virus scan and make sure there isn’t an infection or malicious programme running in the background

None

  1. Try flying in a variety of different locations and different planes to see if there’s some specific SIM content or combination causing an issue.

Done and checked - still exists.

  1. See if you hard drive is full or close to full and if so clear a bit of space.

Nope - all 3 plenty of room spare.

  1. Check you internet connection speed and see if the performance is being affected by slow download speed

All good.

  1. Take a look at any any windows updates and see if there’s a link between those and the performance issue. Is there a ‘system restore point’ saved on your system that you could roll back to?

No windows updates either.

  1. Was any other software installed recently? Anything else running in the background?

Nothing - the sim broke during a flight.

  1. Open up a performance window while running the SIM and see whether anything is maxxed out, so is the memory completely full and system using lots of disk activity? Is the CPU maxxed out?

Not sure how to do this.

  1. Run a scan on the drive to see if it needs optimising.

These are M2 SSD’s literally months old - would i still need to do that and how?

  1. Do you have MSFS installed on an external drive and if so consider changing location to internal drive.

Internal M2 SSD

  1. Do you have MSFS installed on an SSD, if not, then consider using an SSD instead.

See above.

Thanks - its disabled, one of the first things i did when i got the machine.

This happened mid flight and has stayed so.

All cleared out. No change.

Have always only used the FBW and its been absolutely perfect - no issues.

I have no traffic on ever - I only ever fly on vatsim or with no traffic on.

Well mine was at the end of the flight and now starts like it too. I dont know what that issue actually means though?

Never have it on or in the menu.

Thanks - it seems we both have the same problem.

What about setting the Cockpit Refresh rate to Medium?

The issue there is its only just started to do it - it has alway been perfect before, my machine should and did eat the game with nearly everything maxed.

Sorry to hear
This gave me back 20 fps !
I have also updated FBW yesterday .still no issue
… will try with todays update ( if there is any )
