Come on Guys give us a hotfix, like every other company would do.
You cant leave the game unplayable.
Wait, so previously I heard there was a crash if you didn’t open the map, and now there’s a crash when you DO open it? I’ve not experienced either one at all, but is there any certain conditions that I need to know to try and reproduce it?
I don’t expect we’ll see an update until next week on their regular 2 week schedule.
I hope I get surprised by a fix this week, but I’m not counting on it.
If you open the map right at the begining of the flight your’re good, if you don’t open it at all, you’re good, if you open it midflight, you’re screwed.
I agree with you.
It is fairly fundamental and should really be sorted as soon as possible.
I have it open all the time. Sure this isn’t caused by anything else? Tried to play around with the cockpit display refresh rate?
If you never close it, then you won’t encounter the problem. The crash happens on opening the map while in flight. Open it before taking off and keep it open or minimized and you’re good.
I see.
P.S. I really like your avatar.
I wonder what the difference is with my setup vs others. I open the VFR map all the time in the middle of my flights and have never crashed (that sound you hear is me knocking on wood). I only fly the Longitude, and generally fly from KBUR to other western destinations.
I love this game/simulation/visual candy factory and I’ll never go back to X-Plane. But please, please, please, gentlemen, release a hotfix for some of these problems. Granted, I was a programmer in my previous life so I know it’s not as easy as changing a few lines here and there. But IF you can do it, please do so.
The mysteries of code. Just like some people have no issues with Live Weather working. For others, it never works. I tested this and used the map multiple times in flight without issue. And then randomly, the next time, CTD. Other times, I got CTD as soon as I opened it the first time.
It would seem something is happening… No indication as to when, but I would anticipate in the next day or two if they’re pre-loading stuff in the content manager.

Bottom line, if you don’t want to waste a two hour flight, just don’t use the VFR Map. Bring up a browser map. I use Windy.com right now to get by without having to use LittleNav. I still may install LittleNav though.
Honestly I have not had any issues with the sim except for the scenery like lakes in the east part of the USA sitting 6,000 feet above agl and autopilot sending me in a loop but from the very first update and the next my sim experience has gotten worse nothing has seemed to be fixed
It is a workaround, but having the map pop out before every flight is what we’ve got currently. I think a problem is that it seems to be quite inconsistent with who it happens to and who it doesn’t (IE, I haven’t CTD from the Map issue as of yet). It may be simply to risky to put out a half-fix that may affect more users than it helps right now.
Well, crap. The only time I do open it is during the flight. lol
It could be anything… screen position, aspect ratio, resolution… and if that window uses Javascript like the MFD’s do, it could be something with the installed version of Java. I’ll tinker with it tonight, see if I can make it crash on me.
Disableing the map , removing it from your tool menu works aswell… I havent used that vfr map since before last update, Its sucks,
If you really need a map download and use for free littlenavmap… you can run it on another monitor or on another pc or tablet… its SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than that vfr map…
The actual root cause of the problem may have nothing to do with the VFR map, except that the VFR map is one of the things that trigger a CTD when other conditions are met. I never open the VFR map, yet I have experienced CTDs when doing other things that increase demand on the GPU and other graphics resources, like turning my head side to side with TrackIR, running the application a long time without restarting, etc.
It seems to me that the application may have some resource leaks that haven’t been identified yet, and these leaks tie up resources. At a certain point, they naturally cause CTDs.
Determining what resources are leaking and where can be very difficult, especially with such a complex application.
So, we don’t know that anything is wrong with the VFR map. If not, there is nothing to fix about it. Hopefully, once the root cause is found and fixed, all or most of the CTDs could disappear.
It looks like we are actually in agreement.
I only use Littlenavmap. It’s a great addon. Free, multipurpose and, for me, no FPS effect. I never use the VFR map.
Your experience is interesting and adds to the mystery of why there is such disparity between users and configurations.
On my side, I’ve never had even one CTD under any circumstances (so far anyway) despite having over 280 hours in the sim, with some sessions lasting 8~12 hours at a time without restarting, and no ill side effects.
I also have TrackIR, but it has not presented any issues in FS 2020 either. I usually leave TrackIR running, even when not playing any games that use it.
Sometimes I get a little bored with a flight, so I will pass the time by doing some vector design work in the background using both Photoshop and Inkscape, along with several Chrome tabs open at the same time. Yeah, I was concerned that I was going to tax the system and maybe FS would complain by crashing or exhibiting other odd behavior, but it kept on cruising.
I dunno… it’s definitely puzzling, but I have confidence that Asobo will get it sorted out, even if it’s not as quickly as some people would like.
Never had the VFR-map ctd happen before, but here i am, midflight usually!
I just wonder how we can help in solving this issue.

Steiny
