Just because the data isn’t reaching you, doesn’t mean the servers are the main problem and that streaming the data in todays world is unrealistic.
There can be different reasons why you’re not getting the bandwidth you need.
There’s a whole thread for example where German ISP Telekom seems to be having problems with their DNS servers, resulting in Low Bandwidth warnings and barely any data being streamed, even though speed and packet tests all run perfectly and show no problems.
After switching to Cloudflare DNS the game runs without problems for most who tried it and posted in that thread.
Never said the servers were the issue but in fact you have actually hit the nail on the head why streaming is bad because anywhere from you through the entire internet to the servers can go down or slow and you’re out of business. So in fact streaming is a very bad idea because so much of your data path you
have no access too and cannot control and these 3rd party data paths are essential to your project working.
I see your point that it increases the potential for disruption. On the other hand the largest amount of data (the planet) had already been streamed in MSFS2020, so that’s something which is a proven concept already.
What would be your alternative? Downloading all that onto your hard drive is not exactly a realistic idea either, since we are talking about data storage capacity in the multiple-petabyte-range.
So the fact that MS and Asobo now have also decided to also stream aircraft and other formerly local data only increases the amount of data on the servers marginally - while it admittedly increases the bandwidth you need since more data is being streamed at the same time.
Still they already said that you will be able to download stuff to your hard drive again in the future via the content manager, so then we will see if it actually makes a difference. Personally I doubt it, but I will probably still be downloading my favourite stuff to the hard drive and test it.
Streaming has become so common nowadays that I don’t see it as unreliable per se. Sure there are hickups from time to time, but over the last 4 years I’ve had few instances in MSFS that posed problems, and I see the current situation more as teething problems, that seem to have all but resolved themselves for most people as there are only very few people actually complaining.
Since changing the DNS servers for me provides a far faster and more fluent streaming experience than I ever had (and still have) in MSFS2020, I don’t see streaming as that big of a deal.
(In fact I was working at a company that was developing a streaming service via closed LAN and early DSL around 2001. THAT was really something completely new and unreliable at the time. )
probably several thousand. For MSFS2020 they told us there’d be some two petabyte. With the improved visiual quality and increased areas of TIN I guess that will have increased a bit.
