Now that SU3 has been released I’m starting to think about making the move to 2024. But the question is: is it ready?
My focus is airliners, free flight, no career mode. My primary aircraft are the PMDG 777s and Fenix A320.
The reasons I’m interested in 2024 are:
A330s
Improved Lighting
Seasons
It’s where the bulk of future investment by third party developers will be concentrated.
Are features like the A330s, lighting and seasons mature enough/sufficient quality to justify the move to 2024 or better to wait a bit longer for SU4 or later?
Prepare yourself to struggle with the initial setup using the updated control binding interface but otherwise FS2024 is worth the switch. One other heads up–it is DX12 only and likes VRAM so you might have some issues if your video card is older/vram limited.
PMDG (777), iFly, Fenix, Inibuilds airliners work nicely and just about all of my airport addons, GSX, work perfectly. Still waiting on the PMDG 737 and Flow Pro addons to be compatible but otherwise things work.
I nearly went back to 2020 this week, the first time I’ve thought it since November but with a little tweaking on xbox series x and at the moment staying away from major cities the sim is ground breaking and beautiful
I get the arguments to stick with 2020, but I think it’s time to move on. When mod developers began making them for 2024 only (which I see more of on flightsim), that got my attention. I’ve been on 2024 since the start, and I lived through the mess but it’s much improved now. The way I see it is, soon you’ll have three choices, no flight sim at all, XP, or 2024. I want a flight sim, I don’t want XP, so it’s 2024 for me. Best of luck.
I would strongly suggest you wait for this issue to get resolved before making any switch.
Update: After using DDU in safe mode to do a clean uninstall of my AMD drivers and re-installing them it resolved the MainThread issue for me. I have now flown over eight flights and the MainThread has always recovered from its peaks. All’s well for me now.
I’m on the verge of moving over to MSFS2024 - SU3 seems to be a great improvement for me. HOWEVER, there are still many issues to address - some of which currently impact on my use of my favourite planes - twin props:-
Twin Otter - Please, please, please, bring into MSFS2024 the MSFS2020 (Aerosoft) version which, I assume, MS / Asobo ‘purchased’. The recent iteration is very poor when compared to the one in MSFS2020. The engine sounds are truely awful; the bright blue cockpit floor looks terrible; and there are too few varieties.
King Air 305i - The Garmin’s avionics are just not correct. Unable to check engine performance; and I have been unable to enter any transponder codes.
ATR - I’ve not even attempted a flight in this (one of my ‘go to planes’ in MSFS2020), as the throttle animations don’t seem to align with my hardware - I’m still trying to investigate, but currently believe it is a fault with the software.
I’m ready for MSFS2025 - but I still don’t think MSFS2024 is yet ready for me (nearly 1 year since release).
They need to ditch the Garmin avionics in it all together. No King Air 350i is equipped with a G3X nor even a G1000 / G1000NXi. You can find an older 350 with a G1000 / G1000 NXi though as there is an STC for it. Older 350i aircraft are found with the Pro Line 21 and newer the Pro Line Fusion from Collins Aerospace. Realistically though the best bet we have at a good King Air for MSFS 2024 will be the new Professional Series from Black Square which will not be a 350i.
This is definitely an issue for some but not for all. I have never experienced it – it is likely some compatibility issue with certain systems, configurations, or addons. I’m sure Asobo will figure it out because it has plagued some users for months now.
That said, it does not cause problems for everyone AND, more importantly, I would not remove FS2020 until you are confident you are happy with 2024. Relatively easy to have both sims installed. Just make sure you have separate community folders—you can copy the compatible addons from your 2020 community folder to your 2024 folder.
If you are a VR user then SU3 and the PMDG 777 are currently no go due to LOD issue it introduced. There is a workaround, but it involves forcing high LODs at all times in developer mode, which in VR has the amplified side effect (compared to 2D) of stealing valuable performance and hence is not acceptable to me. As a result, I have reverted most of my IFR flying back to MSFS 2020.
As such, if you are a VR IFR flyer of add-on heavy iron, IMO MSFS 2024 in SU3 flavour is not ready to make the switch.
I finally started my move to FS2024 one week ago. It’s been a long slog, but I’m generally happy with it after playing with the graphics settings (and getting ReShade per another thread). App load time is 2 minutes, vice 8+ for FS2020 (with a TON of official/Community content). Which is good, since below are all of the CTDs I’ve gotten (using a Powershell script to query the Application event log). Fortunately, only one was during a flight, the rest are when loading flights, looking at the world map, or sitting at the gate before starting.
I’ll still keep 2020 around for the forseeable future, at least until some key planes are available (PMDG 737s, Black Square, JF 146).
