Hello here,
So, as the title says, I made the jump from the 5600 (not X) to the 5800X3D. Unfortunately I’m not seeing the improvements I was hoping to get.
This is my system besides the CPU:
GPU: 6750XT 12G
RAM: 32GB at 3600Mhz
I don’t know if I need to do a BIOS reset or something like that after changing the CPU but I am getting basically the same frame time and frame rate as before. I just bumped up the TLOD from 150 to 175 and increased the texture quality from medium to high.
Temps looks fine, 70 degrees at maximum.
I play at 1080p with resolution scale to 130.
Would a fresh Windows install help?
Thank you in advance
EDIT: Seems like enabling Kombo Strike 3 from the BIOS settings improved the stability of the frame time, but I am still getting stutters and huge frame time spikes when panning around external view at iniBuilds EGLL with FS Traffic.
It’s very possible that you need to update the BIOS for your motherboard. You should go to your motherboard vendor’s website and find the latest BIOS version for your model and update it.
I actually updated the BIOS when I first built the pc, in December.
I haven’t checked since then but I don’t know if there’s any BIOS update already
just go a 5800xd, look at base clock. If stuck at 3.4 update to newest bios to reach 4.3.
I have it paired with Rtx 4080 and x570s gaming motherboard, 32 ram 3200, runs great. 50 to 60 fps on ultra in 4k at big airports, VR also very good
No, base clock is not stuck, it reaches 4.3Ghz so I don’t think I need a bios update.
I am just wondering why I am still limited by main thread
Its always the way. Im not too familiar with AMD chips, but with my Intel I had to activate turbo mode to get the 6ghz on the cores.
Im main thread limited too, but run a 13900ks, 64gb of DDR5, 3080TI and play at 2k. I got a 2tb KC3000 NVME drive which improved drive speed.
Mainthread limited doesn’t necessarily mean you’re PC is tripe. I can have a smooth 50fps but under DX11 it still shows limited by mainthread, switching to DX12 gives me limited by GPU. I wouldn’t get too obsessed with it, believe me… I’ve been there. You’ll always have one or the other.
As for your X3D chip, what motherboard do you have?

I have an MSI B550 Gaming Plus.
Yeah, I know that you have to be limited by either the CPU or GPU and I was expecting that with this jump the GPU would have been the limiting factor.
Unfortunately DX12 is not an option as of right now, performance wise is amazing but there is this bug which breaks the experience totally
Check which bios you have , it may need updating. Check MBO specs for the downloads hope this helps I just jumped from a 2700x myself to a 5800x and cant believe the difference my Bios was up todate
Support for the 5800X3D was release in the 23rd of March 2022 build.
I’m on the latest BIOS which is from 16th of August 2022, and there isn’t a newer version.
Something sounds funky to me, just double check what ram speeds you have through task manager. Also, have you updated chipset drivers for the board?

Yep, after installing the CPU RAM went to 2400 but I reapplied the XMP profile to have it at 3600 again.
No, I haven’t updated the chipset driver…
You have probably checked this but I thought I would mention it.
Regarding the 5800 X3D, I read that if your power plan is set wrong it can have a serious effect on performance.
Changing the power plan from “AMD High Performance” to "AMD Ryzen Balanced can fix it or try the default Windows Balanced profile.
Hope you sort out the problem, I am purchasing the same chip in a few weeks.
You definitely want the chipset drivers updated.

Seems like I don’t have AMD High Performance or AMD Ryzen Balanced even after installing the chipset drivers. I’m just gonna stick with balanced.
I don’t know if it’s worth giving the Ultimate performance plan a shot!
Hi Bongio94
My fault it looks like it’s phased out for the 5000 series, this is an interesting read, an article on it from AMD community.
I only have the 3000 series 3700X cpu, and it looks like these power plans are not required for 5000.
You must have a slider now in settings / Power & Sleep, to increase performance.
The middle position of the slider – Is the Windows default.
P.S.
The performance and energy slider will not be available if you use the Power Saving or Maximum Performance Power Profiles. And it looks like you must have a Windows 10 20H" build or later.
