TAA significant performance drop vs 2020

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

I’m experiencing around 25% less performance with the new sim Vs 2020 in TAA mode. The only alternative is to use DLSS, however this has a negative impact of blurry glass cockpits.

I appreciate this isn’t a bug as such but hoping it will be logged as feedback with some idea of when optimisations may occur. DX12 TAA in msfs 2020 also performed poorly in relation to DX11 TAA and I was hoping we’d see an improvement in the new sim which is now DX12 only.

That’s because FS2024 is much more GPU limited than MSFS.
By increasing the load on the GPU, framerate drops proportionally to the internal resolution at which the frames are rendered with TAA, whereas before you may have had some GPU headroom due to the mainthread bottleneck.

Yes I’m aware that DX12 is more taxing on the GPU as it was exactly the same in 2020. The difference is that in 2020 we had the option to use DX11 to get reasonable performance with TAA.

Currently I’m not using VR in 2024 as I can’t get decent performance without using DLSS, I’m hopeful there will be further optimisations now that DX12 is the only option.

If anyone has recommended settings for DX12 TAA in VR that gives acceptable performance (above 30 FPS without a 4090) i’d be grateful.

I have everything set to medium/low, 3500 horizontal resolution in the pimax crystal with a 3090ti.

My hope is that they find a bug that is more or less easy to fix so that we get our performance nearly back with a big sigh of relief.

Unfortunately this is the performance of FS 2024. Even in 2D at 3440x1440 TAA it delivers about 30-35 fps with my 3090 in the same conditions in which I had 55-60 before.
I can only imagine how heavier is VR with a modern headset and its crazy resolution…

Can confirm the overall effect, also around 30% less fps at comparable settings and resolution. Also when using DLSS.

BUT I can’t blame it on DX12 as I’ve been using DX12 for years with 2020 and it actually ran smoother for me than DX11.

I had the same 30%-40% loss with TAA upon release. But magically the Day the first Hotfix Patch arrived my TAA Performance was back on par with fs2020 with just minor adjustments to the settings. However yesterday the Performance was suddenly bad again without changing settings, flying in the same area with the same aircraft. When Performance is low i can see a lot of periodical red spikes in the Steam VR Performance Monitor ( like 5 per second). So i saw a great performance of 2024 with TAA already which gives me hope it is a bug that gets sorted out soon. Ill try again tonight as yesterday was sunday and the Servers where slow. i cannot imagine Bandwidth has an impact on FPS, but who knows… some already suspected Server performance as the culprit.

UPDATE: Today again performance was on the bad side. When performance was good the other day i could tune settings like TAA RenderScale to optimize. Today Renderscale simply did not apply. Crank it up to 200 or drop it to 30. No difference in Frametimes and no visual difference. And no difference to apply in flight or Mainmenu. Only Sim restart made the Renderscale apply.
The VR-Setting Screen is bugged/fake, you cannot disable Terrain Shadows too and some settings show “undefined” until you change a value. Wouldn’t be surprised if simply the whole VR-Graphic Settings are not working like expected. Maybe get mixed with 2D settings or labels and inputs got mixed up.
oh boy…

When you guys talk about VR and fps/performance, please add the resolution used. This is worthless without that information.

I’m finding the RdrThread goes through the roof in VR.

I get 60fps in 2D but only 18fps in VR, using around the same render resolution (1680x1050 vs 1645x1827). Yes, this is rendering two views instead of one, however the RdrThread timing is almost 8 times longer!

Another thing that makes me wonder if it’s an optimisation issue is that if I use DLSS to lower the render resolution to just 823x913, RdrThread still takes over 50ms and the frame-rate doesn’t really increase from over four times the resolution.

Seems you have a problem with VRAM, lower your texture resolution.

Wow… yes! Thank you! That was it exactly.

I twiddled the settings to get the used VRAM down, even just a quarter of a GB or so and it immediately tripled my VR frame rates.

Time to save up for a 12GB card, I think.

Better 16GB, minimum…
