The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder

Hello,

So this is a recurring issue for me, but I’ve only just now tried to fix it, or find a way to fix it, I’m trying to download liveries for the a320, in this specific case the a320nx by FlyByWire, but this issue also occurs in the A320 from asobo, when ever i try to extract the files from the .zip it gives me message saying destination path too long, and if i press skip, i cant use the livery, can somebody please help me find a way to fix this ive attached a photo of one of the errors ive received.

Hi there,
Welcome to the forums! As this is an installation issue, I have moved your topic to Tech Talk .

Your Windows filesystem can only take a path of a certain length, which according to a quick Internet search appears to be 260 characters. That’s going to include all the folders inside your path. So for a file like this:

C:\Some\really\really\really\long\path\file.txt

It’s not just looking at the “file.txt” and the 8 characters contained therein, but also the “really, really, really” long path, as well.

You could try extracting the files to your Windows Downloads folder, which presumably doesn’t have too long of a path. Once you have extracted it, you may want to rename the folder that you just extracted to keep things shorter and then move that shorter-length folder into your Community folder.

Ill try that in the morning, thank you.

on an unrelated note, in msfs, whenever I save a flight to the cloud, or on my computer, and load the saved flight, for example, the next day quick access menu, i believe its called, doesnt show up, meaning I can’t look at a map, or atc, or change the weather, nothing, do you know a solution?

I don’t know a solution, but you can check through this bug report to see if other people have discovered any workarounds:

The Windows Long File Path’s is a legacy thing, if you are not using older systems to share files, etc… with your sim PC which would be either Windows 10 or 11, you can just disable it.

And you can get around that by using junction points, but that might not be possible if you have MSFS itself further down the file system.

My sim is installed in:

D:\Flight Simulator\

So my path is fairly short to get to the “Community” folder, but if MSFS is installed deeper than that it can cause trouble.

But I’d be surprised if your average user was falling foul of the NTFS limit for path length.

Happens quite a bit (given the amount of topics that come up here about it).

And if you use AIG, it’s notorious for long paths, so much so that part of the install process asks you if you want it disabled.

For me Windows 11 cured many of my long file name issues, do not know what changed, but something did. If not on W11, see if you can move to it, MS has most of the bugs out of it now, and it’s ok for me. At first hated it, but, with the huge monitor I now use, having everything in the middle actually saves time and trouble. Getting used to right-lower-corner to “show desktop” is PIA, but I’m getting used to it.

ye, I do have W11 installed

aaaaaand, what is AIG

firstly what is NTFS and secondly, this is my path to get to community D:\WpSystem\S-1-5-21-370793205-366627130-589029231-1001\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community

unfortunately, this did not work for me

NTFS stands for Nice Try File System (Doesn’t actually, just an old joke amongst administrators) Just stands for New Technology File System and is just the format that your Hard Disk Drive gets formatted in.

Nothing to worry about.

Follow the link I gave you above to enable long paths and you will be just fine

As for AIG, it’s a traffic injection / livery addon.

Sorry, what didn’t work for you? What did you try?

while going through the registry per the link from @skypilotYTS I kept finding files that started with NTFS

Don’t mess with any of those. That would imply that you installed your sim on another disk, since that is where your profile resides, and is abstracted from that location into your Windows user profile by way of an NTFS junction point.

That string you listed includes “S-1-5-21-370793205-366627130-589029231-1001” , is the SID of your local account.

If I remember right you can tell its a local account because of the “1001” at the end.

I tried using that link but I couldn’t get it to work, but I did find a solution that works for me, allbeit a very time consuming one renaming each livery inside the zip and then unzipping it, this is especially rime consuming since i have a pack of 46 fronteir liveries

Here’s another link (same method) that is a bit more clear.
